2016-17 Rhode Island College
Women’s Indoor Track & Field Season Summary

Providence, R.I.-Head Coach Timothy Rudd’s women’s indoor track & field team wrapped up the 2016-17 season at the Tufts Last Chance Meet on March 4.

 

The Anchorwomen did not score as a team at the New England Open Championships on Feb. 24-25. RIC finished in a 17th place tie (29 teams) at the New England Div. III Championships on Feb. 17-18.

 

RIC finished in fourth place (11 teams) with a team score of 79.0 in the Alliance and in second place (seven teams) with a team score of 100.0 in the Little East at the New England Alliance Championships on Feb. 11.

 

 

 

Senior Christina Sayavong (Pawtucket, RI) placed 16th in the weight throw (11.17m; season-best) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Feb. 11. She finished 12th in the weight throw (10.76m) at the Maroon & White Classic on Jan. 21. Sayavong finished fifth in the weight throw (10.83m) at the Coast Guard Winter Invitational on Jan. 14. She placed 20th in the weight throw (10.20m) at the UMass Boston Invitational on Dec. 3.

 

As a sophomore in 2014-15, she placed 15th in the weight throw (11.26m) at the Alliance Championships on Feb. 14. Sayavong placed 27thin the weight throw (10.71m) at the Scarlet and White Invitational on Feb. 7. She placed 19th in the weight throw (11.41m; season best) at the Yale Invitational on Jan. 10. Sayavong finished 20th in the weight throw (10.43m) at the Jay Carisella Invitational on Dec. 13. She placed ninth in the weight throw (10.16m) at the Springfield Invitational on Dec. 6.

 

As a freshman in 2013-14, Sayavong finished 29th in the weight throw (10.15m) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Feb. 15. She finished 44th in the weight throw (10.68m; season-best) at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Feb. 7. Sayavong finished 22nd in the weight throw (10.11m) at the Tufts Stampede Invitational on Feb. 1. She finished 49th in the weight throw (10.59m) at the John Thomas Terrier Invitational on Jan. 24. Sayavong finished 10th in the weight throw (9.72m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Jan. 18. She finished fifth in the weight throw (10.07m) at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 11. Sayavongfinished 11th in the weight throw (7.85m) at the Springfield Invitational on Dec. 7.

 

Sayavong is a youth development major with a minor in coaching and a 2012 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School.

 

Senior Jessica Trautman (Narragansett, RI) finished 12th in the weight throw (12.20m; season-best) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Feb. 11. She finished 24th in the weight throw (11.88m) at the URI Invitational on Feb. 4. Trautman placed eighth in the weight throw (11.95m) at the Maroon & White Classic on Jan. 21. She earned third in the weight throw (11.54m) at the Coast Guard Winter Invitational on Jan. 14. Trautman finished 14th in the weight throw (11.20m) at the UMass Boston Invitational on Dec. 3.

 

As a junior in 2015-16, Trautman finished 36th in the weight throw (9.48m; season-best) and 90th in the 200m (31.55) at the Scarlet and White Invitational on Feb. 6. She finished fourth in the weight throw (8.56m) and eighth in the 600m (2:17.10) at the Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 24. Trautman finished 10th in the 200m (33.00) and 10th in the weight throw (8.70m) at the Coast Guard Winter Invitational on Jan. 16. She finished 56th in the 200m (31.24; season-best) at the Jay Carisella Invitational on Dec. 12. Trautman finished 11th in the 600m (2:09.97; season-best) at the Springfield Invitational on Dec. 5.

 

As a sophomore in 2014-15, Trautman placed 13th in the 600m (1:55.18; season-best) at the Alliance Championships on Feb. 14. Trautman finished 14thin the 500m (1:33.33; season-best) at the Scarlet and White Invitational on Feb. 7. She finished 14th in the 600m (2:02.88) at the Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 24. Trautman finished fifth in the 600m (1:59.61), seventh in the 55m (8.56; season-best) and seventh in the 200m (30.78; season-best) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Jan. 17. Trautman placed 31st in the 400m (1:13.04) at the Yale Invitational on Jan. 10. She placed 10th in the 600m (1:57.92) and was a member of the second place 4x200m (1:51.63) relay team at the Springfield Invitational on Dec. 6.

 

As a freshman in 2013-14, Trautman was a member of the 4x400m relay team that earned N.E. Alliance honors with a third place finish (4:13.32) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Feb. 15. Trautman finished 15th in the 200m (1:07.39) at the Tufts Stampede Invitational on Feb. 1. She finished ninth in the 400m (1:13.54) and 12th in both the 200m (31.32) and the preliminaries of the 55m (8.89) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Jan. 18. Trautman finished seventh in the 400m (1:10.74) and 10th in the 200m (30.60; season-best) at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 11. She finished 18th in the 400m (1:09.61; season-best) at the Jay Carisella Invitational on Dec. 14. Trautman finished ninth in the 600m (2:04.31) at the Springfield Invitational on Dec. 7.

 

She is a physical/health education major with a minor in coaching and a 2013 graduate of Narragansett High School.

 

Junior Destinee Barrette (Warwick, RI) placed fourth in the weight throw (15.44m) at the Tufts Last Chance Meet on March 4. She finished 16th in the weight throw (14.95m) at the N.E. Open Championships on Feb. 25. Barrette earned All-New England honors with a fifth place finish in the weight throw (15.65m; season-best) at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Feb. 17. She earned N.E. Alliance honors with a second place finish in the weight throw (14.41m) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Feb. 11. Barrette finished third in the weight throw (15.40m) and 21st in the shot (9.76m) at the URI Invitational on Feb. 4. She finished second in the weight throw (15.21m) and eighth in the shot (9.80m; season-best) at the Maroon & White Classic on Jan. 21. Barrette finished first in the weight throw (14.45m) and placed 20th in the shot (9.73m) at the UMass Boston Invitational on Dec. 3.

 

Sophomore Melanie Brunelle (Warwick, RI) was named the Little East Field Athlete of the Year. She finished first in the triple jump (11.46m) and seventh in the high jump (1.55m) at the Tufts last Chance Meet on March 4. She finished 10th in the triple jump (11.10m) at the N.E. Open Championships on Feb. 25. Brunelle earned All-New England honors with a fifth place finish in the triple jump (11.42m) and as part of the fourth place 4x200m relay (1:46.92) at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Feb. 17. She also finished 10th in the high jump (1.56m; season-best) and 14th in the long jump (5.08m; season-best) at the same meet. Brunelle earned N.E. Alliance honors in four events at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Feb. 11. She finished first in both the 600m (1:38.14; season-best) and triple jump (11.26m), while also placing third in the long jump (5.22m), fifth in the high jump (1.52m). Brunelle also finished ninth in the preliminaries of the 55m hurdles (9.04).

 

Brunelle finished first in the triple jump (11.09m), sixth in the 500m (1:19.93) and 19th in the high jump (1.55m) at the URI Invitational on Feb. 4. She placed 10th in the triple jump (11.09m) and 13th in the high jump (160m) at the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Jan. 27. Brunelle finished first in the triple jump (11.24m) and third in the 60m hurdles (9.78) at the Maroon & White Classic on Jan. 21. She finished first in the high jump (1.52m), long jump (5.24m) and triple jump (10.91m), while also placing second in the 600m (1:47.59), at the Coast Guard Winter Invitational on Jan. 14. Brunelle placed seventh in the high jump (1.60m) at the Jay Carisella Invitational on Dec. 10. She placed first in the long jump (5.27m) and second in the 400m (59.60) at the UMass Boston Indoor Invitational on Dec. 3. She was named the Little East Field Athlete of the Week twice on the season.

 

Sophomore Margaret Buckley (Norwich, CT) finished 23rd in the 800m (3:31.15) at the College Maroon & White Classic on Jan. 21. She placed 19th in the 300m (3:25.70) at the Jay Carisella Invitational on Dec. 10. Buckley finished 24th in the 800m (3:29.24; season-best) at the UMass Boston Invitational on Dec. 3.

 

Sophomore Eleni Grammas (Cranston, RI) was named the team MVP. Grammas finished 18th in the 200m (26.20m) and 23rd in the 60m (8.03; season-best) at the N.E. Open Championships on Feb. 25. She earned All-New England honors as part of the fourth place 4x200m relay (1:46.92) at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Feb. 17. She also placed 12th in both the 200m (26.63) and in the preliminaries of the 60m (8.11) at the same meet. Grammas earned N.E. Alliance honors with a first place finish in the 55m (7.48; season-best) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Feb. 11.

 

She placed 16th in the preliminaries of the 60m (8.10), while also finishing 22nd in the 200m (27.15), at the URI Invitational on Feb. 4. Grammas placed 32nd in the 60m (8.12) and 58th in the 200m (26.19; season-best) at the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Jan. 27. She finished second in both the 60m (8.07) and the 200m (27.00) at the Maroon & White Classic on Jan. 21. Grammas finished first in the 55m (7.62) and fourth in the 200m (28.16) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Jan. 14. She finished 12th in 400m (1:05.16) and 15th in the 200m (27.42) at the Jay Carisella Invitational on Dec. 10. Grammas finished fifth in the 60m (8.11) and 16th in the 200m (27.69) at the UMass Boston Invitational on Dec. 3. She was named the Little East Track Athlete of the Week once on the season.

 

Sophomore Nicole Grammas (Cranston, RI) finished 21st in the 400m (59.81; season-best) at the N.E. Open Championships on Feb. 25. She placed 10th in the 400m (1:00.37) at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Feb. 17. Grammas earned N.E. Alliance honors with a third place finish in the 400m (1:00.24) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Feb. 11. She also finished 12th in the 200m (27.61) at the same meet.

 

She finished seventh in the 400m (1:00.62) at the URI Invitational on Feb. 4. Grammas placed 61st in the 400m (1:00.27) and 120th in the 200m (27.37; season-best) at the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Jan. 27. She finished sixth in the 200m (27.50) and seventh in the 60m (8.30) at the Maroon & White Classic on Jan. 21. Grammas finished first in the 400m (1:02.74) and ninth in the 200m (29.28) at the Coast Guard Winter Invitational on Jan. 14. She placed 23rd in the preliminaries of the 60m (8.44) at the Jay Carisella Invitational on Dec. 10. Grammas finished sixth in the 400m (1:00.96) at the UMass Boston Indoor Invitational on Dec. 3.

 

Junior Briana Linehan (Saunderstown, RI) placed 20th in the 5,000m (21:12.51) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Feb. 11. She finished seventh in the 5,000m (20:40.91; season-best) at the Maroon & White Classic on Jan. 21.

 

Freshman Cassidy Bissitt (Smithfield, RI) finished 11th in the 800m (2:36.32) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Feb. 11. She finished 23rd in the 800m (2:33.51; season-best) at the URI Invitational on Feb. 4. Bissitt finished 119th in the 800m (2:36.02) at the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Jan. 27. She placed fifth in the 600m (1:48.81; season-best) at the Maroon & White Classic on Jan. 21. Bissitt finished 12th in the 800m (2:41.15) at the Jay Carisella Invitational on Dec. 10. She earned sixth in the 500m (1:25.94; season-best) at the UMass Boston Indoor Invitational on Dec. 3.

 

Freshman Chevell Burgess (Providence, RI) finished 10th in the high jump (1.47m; season-best) and 11th in both the 200m (27.56) and 55m hurdles (9.21) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Feb. 11. She finished 25th in the 200m (27.48) and 26th in the 60m hurdles (10.04) at the URI Invitational on Feb. 4. Burgess placed 58th in the 60m hurdles (10.12) and 91st in the 200m (26.80; season-best) at the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Jan. 27. She finished second in both the 55m hurdles (9.56) and the high jump (1.47m), while also placing third in the 200m (27.92), at the Coast Guard Winter Invitational on Jan. 14. Burgess placed 16th in the preliminaries of the 60m hurdles (10.25) and 23rd in the 200m (27.94) at the Jay Carisella Invitational on Dec. 3. She finished 10th in the 200m (27.33) and 13th in the preliminaries of the 60m hurdles (10.35) at the UMass Boston Indoor Invitational on Dec. 3.

 

Freshman Shauna Ciola (Bethany, CT) placed 36th in the 200m (31.15; season-best) at the Jay Carisella Invitational on Dec. 10. She finished 21st in the high jump (1.40m; season-best) at the UMass Boston indoor Invitational on Dec. 3. 

 

Freshman Jamie Dobson (Bradford, RI) finished 30th in the weight throw (10.17m; season-best) at the URI Invitational on Feb. 4. She placed 21st in the weight throw (8.79m) at the Maroon & White Classic on Jan. 21. Dobson finished 27th in the weight throw (8.87m) at the UMass Boston Invitational on Dec. 3.

 

Freshman Analise England (Smithfield, RI) finished 13th in the 800m (2:38.54) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Feb. 11. She placed fourth in the 800m (2:43.76) at the Coast Guard Winter Invitational on Jan. 14. England finished ninth in the 800m (2:35.75; season-best) at the Jay Carisella Invitational on Dec. 10. She placed fifth in the 1,000m (3:31.22; season-best) at the UMass Boston Invitational on Dec. 3.

 

Freshman Wennely Figueroa (Providence, RI) finished 14th in the 800m (2:44.51; season-best) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Feb. 11. She placed sixth in the 800m (2:54.29) at the Coast Guard Winter Invitational on Jan. 14. Figueroa placed sixth in the 500m (1:38.26; season-best) at the Jay Carisella Invitational on Dec. 10.

 

Freshman Emma Landroche (Warwick, RI) placed 28th in the 200m (26.59) at the N.E. Open Championships on Feb. 25. She earned All-New England honors as part of the fourth place 4x200m relay (1:46.92) at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Feb. 17. She also finished 25th in the 200m (27.04) at the same meet. Landroche finished 10th in the 200m (27.42) and 17th in the preliminaries of the 55m (7.85) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Feb. 11. She placed 13th in the 200m (26.50; season-best) and 33rd in the preliminaries of the 60m (8.29) at the URI Invitational on Feb. 4. Landroche finished 50th in the 60m (8.37) at the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Jan. 27. She placed first in the 200m (26.57) and fourth in the 60m (8.19) at the Maroon &White Classic on Jan. 21. Landroche finished fourth in both the 55m (7.78; season-best) and the 400m (1:10.19) at the Coast Guard Winter Invitational on Jan. 14. She finished 19th in both the preliminaries of the 60m (8.36) and the 200m (27.65) at the Jay Carisella Invitational on Dec. 10. Landroche placed seventh in the 200m (27.06) and 14th in the preliminaries of the 60m (8.34) at the UMass Boston Invitational on Dec. 3.

 

Sophomore Margaret McCaffrey (East Greenwich, RI) placed 21st in the 1,000m (3:12.99) at the N.E. Open Championships on Feb. 25. She finished fifth in the 1,000m (3:09.19; season-best) at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Feb. 17. McCaffrey earned N.E. Alliance honors with a fifth place finish in the 1,000m (3:11.86) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Feb. 11. McCaffrey also finished 17th in the 3,000m (12:13.54) at the same meet. She placed 21st in the 1,000m (3:13.72) at the URI Invitational on Feb. 4. McCaffrey finished 46th in the 1,000m (3:10.53) at the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Jan. 27. She finished 10th in the 3,000m (11:48.83; season-best) at the Maroon & White Classic on Jan 21. McCaffrey placed second in the 1,000m (3:28.86), while also finishing sixth in the mile (6:05.12), at the Coast Guard Winter Invitational on Jan. 14. She placed first in the 1,000m (3:14.75) at the UMass Boston Invitational on Dec. 3.

 

Freshman Kaitlyn Neves (Cranston, RI) placed fifth in the high jump (1.37m) and  14th in the 200m (30.91) at the Coast Guard Winter Invitational on Jan. 14. She finished 33rd in the 200m (29.71; season-best) at the Jay Carisella Invitational on Dec. 10. Neves placed  21st in the high jump (1.40m; season-best) and 60th in the 200m (29.75) and at the UMass Boston Invitational on Dec. 3.

 

Freshman Nicaury Nunez (Central Falls, RI) finished 16th in the 800m (2:45.36; season-best) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Feb. 11. She placed 16th in the 800m (2:55.00) at the Maroon & White Classic on Jan. 21. Nunez finished seventh in the 800m (2:55.72) at the Coast Guard Winter Invitational on Jan. 14. She earned 15th in the 800m (2:52.24) at the Jay Carisella Invitational on Dec. 10. Nunez placed ninth in the 500m (1:41.31; season-best) at the UMass Boston Invitational on Dec. 3.

 

Freshman Jacklyn Xavier (Cumberland, RI) finished 31st in the 200m (26.84) at the N.E. Open Championships on Feb. 25. She earned All-New England honors as part of the fourth place 4x200m relay (1:46.92) at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Feb. 17. She also placed 23rd in the 200m (27.00) at the same meet. Xavier earned N.E. Alliance honors with a fifth place finish in the 200m (27.10) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Feb. 11. She also finished 15th in the preliminaries of the 55m (7.80; season-best) at the same meet.

 

She finished 18th in the 200m (26.94) and 36th in the preliminaries of the 60m (8.38) at the URI Invitational on Feb. 4. Xavier placed 46th in the 60m (8.32; season-best) and 88th in the 200m (26.73; season-best) at the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Jan. 27. She finished eighth in the 60m (8.33) and ninth in the 200m (27.57) at the Maroon & White Classic on Jan. 21. Xavier placed fifth in the 55m (7.93) and sixth in the 200m (28.40) at the Coast Guard Winter Invitational on Jan. 14. She finished 14th in the 200m (27.39) and 18th in the preliminaries of the 60m (8.35) at the Jay Carisella Invitational on Dec. 10. Xavier finished 20th in the 200m (27.77) and 26th in the preliminaries of the 60m (8.49) at the UMass Boston Invitational on Dec. 3.

 

Freshman Oluwafunmibi Yusuff (Providence, RI) finished 16th in the weight throw (13.09m) at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Feb. 17. She earned N.E. Alliance honors with a fourth place finish in the weight throw (13.89m; season-best) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Feb. 11. She also finished 12th in the shot (10.13m) at the same meet. Yusuff finished 18th in the shot (10.30m; season-best), while also placing 13th in the weight throw (13.33m), at the URI Invitational on Feb. 4. She finished 35th (12.58m) in the weight throw at the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Jan. 27.
