COURTNEY LAMBRESE RACKS UP 17 KILLS IN, 3-1,
LOSS TO BEACONS IN LITTLE EAST OPENER

Providence, R.I.-The Rhode Island College women’s volleyball team had their four-match winning streak snapped with a hard-fought, 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 18-25, 20-25), setback against UMass Boston in a Little East Conference contest played at the Murray Center on Friday night.  The win in the second set for the Anchorwomen marked the first time since Nov. 4, 2008 that RIC had taken a set from the Beacons.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• In the opening set, the two teams battled back and forth with the score knotted, 21-21. UMass Boston would pull away down the stretch to take the three-point,25-22 win. RIC junior outside hitter Jillian Ward (Coventry, RI) notched five kills, while senior outside hitter Courtney Lambrese (Cranston, RI) added three kills in the frame. Senior setter Abigayl White (Coventry, RI) registered five assists and two dig. UMass Boston was led by junior setter Rachel Maslach (Berlin Center, OH) with three kills, four assists and two digs, while junior hitter Eileen Shi (San Francisco, CA) notched four kills and two digs.

• Once again the two teams traded leads in the second set with UMB leading, 21-18, late. RIC responded and outscored the Beacons, 7-2, down the stretch to take the 25-23 win in the set and even the match at 1-1. Lambrese and Ward paced RIC with four kills in the set, with White notching eight assists and four digs. Sophomore hitter Sarah Doyle (Glendale, CA) notched three kills and three blocks in the frame for the visitors.

•  The third set saw UMB jump out to a 7-2 start and never trail en route to the 25-18 win and 2-1 advantage in the match. Lambrese had five kills. Ward posted three kills and two digs, while White handed out seven assists. Sophomore hitter Emilia Czapiewska (St. Paul, MN) registered four kills and two service aces in set for UMB.

• RIC held a 17-16 lead in the fourth set before UMass Boston rallied to earn a 25-20 win and the 3-1 victory in the contest. Shi paced the Beacons in the deciding set with five kills, while Maslach notched six assists and two kills to help wrap up the victory. Ward and Lambrese each had five kills while White posted nine assists and four digs in the setback.

 

BY THE NUMBERS
• Rhode Island College hit .066 (40-31-137) in the match. Ward narrowly missed a double-double with 17 kills and nine digs. Lambrese had 17 kills and three digs. White notched 29 assists and 12 digs.

• The Beacons hit .141 (43-25-128) in the victory. Shi tallied a team-high 12 kills and five digs, while Czapiewska had 11 kills, seven digs and seven blocks. Maslach recorded 17 assists and six digs.

 

WHO'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Rivier for a tri-match with the Raiders and Lasell on Saturday, Sept. 16 (1 p.m.).
