LYONS TAME ANCHORWOMEN, 3-1

Providence, R.I.-Junior outside hitter Jillian Ward (Coventry, RI) led Rhode Island College with eight kills, but Wheaton came back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat Rhode Island College, 3-1 (25-22, 24-26, 14-25, 14-25) in women’s volleyball action played at The Murray Center on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Lyons came from behind to tie the first set, 22-22, but RIC rattled off the next three to secure a 25-22 win. Senior outside hitter Courtney Lambrese (Cranston, RI) and Ward led the way for the hosts with four and three kills, respectively. Wheaton junior outside hitter Cathryn MacGregor (North Andover, MA) led the visitors with three winners, while sophomore setter Becca Houghton (Emmaus, PA) set up seven kills.

• The second set was deadlocked, 24-24, but back-to-back kills by freshman right side hitter Julia Palomba (San Carlos, CA) led the visitors to the 26-24, win. WC junior middle hitter Claire Cansler (Newhall, CA) led the Lyons with five kills. Ward paced RIC with four winners.

•  The Lyons broke through in the third set with a convincing, 25-14, win to build a 2-1 advantage. Houghton handed out eight assists and Palomba and Cansler combined for seven kills. RIC managed just one kill, but made seven errors in the frame.

• RIC was unable to mount a comeback in the fourth set, as the visitors won, 25-14.  Cansler had four kills, while Palomba posted three service aces. Houghton set up eight winners.

• Ward led the Anchorwomen with eight kills. Senior setter Abigayl White (Coventry, RI) posted 15 assists and six digs. Cansler had 14 kills, Houghton posted 29 assists and senior libero Stephanie Martin (Centerville, MA) registered 17 digs.

 

BY THE NUMBERS
• Rhode Island College hit .000 (27-27-109), while Wheaton hit .135 (42-27-111).

• The visitors held a 44-31 advantage in digs and a 12-5 margin in service aces.

 

WHO'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Bridgewater State and Becker on Saturday, Sept. 30 (10 a.m.).
