RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE MEN’S GOLF PICKED TO WIN GREAT NORTHEAST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE TITLE THIS WEEKEND

Providence, R.I.-The Rhode Island College men’s golf team has been tabbed as the favorites heading into the 2017 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championship (GNAC) in a poll of the conference’s nine head coaches.

 

The Anchormen received six first place votes and 78 points. Johnson & Wales received 65 points and one first place vote, while St. Joseph’s (ME) and Southern Maine each had 54 points and one first place vote each.

 

RIC will host the 2017 GNAC Championship at Valley Country Club in Warwick on October 14-15. Teams participating in the tournament include: Rhode Island College, Johnson & Wales, Southern Maine, St. Joseph’s (ME), Emmanuel, Suffolk, UMass Dartmouth, Worcester State and Albertus Magnus.

 

 

 

RIC captured five consecutive GNAC Championships (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015) and recorded a second place finish in 2016.

 

The Anchormen are led by senior Austin Cilley (Westerly, RI), who is averaging a score of 74.5 this season. Cilley shot a season-best 70 to take home medalist honors at the season-opening MCLA Invitational (Sept. 14). He has notched three top-three finishes on the year.

 

Sophomore Nathan Patterson (Conway, MA) has recorded a 78.2 average this season, which includes a season-best 74 in the opening round of the Elms Blazers Invitational (Oct. 8).

 

Junior Mike Caparco (Johnston, RI) is averaging 78.5 strokes per round and recorded a pair of top-10 finishes. He finished 10th at the Elms Blazers Invitational (Oct. 8-9) after shooting a season-best 76 in both rounds.

 

The winner of the GNAC Championship earns the conference’s automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Div. III Men’s Golf National Championship in Greensboro, N.C. on May 15-18, 2018.
