DENNIS VAZQUEZ & KOMLA DOGBEY NAMED THIRD TEAM ALL-NEW ENGLAND

Providence, R.I.-Rhode Island College junior midfielder Dennis Vazquez (Providence, RI) and senior forward Komla Dogbey (Providence, RI) were named Third Team All-New England by the United Soccer Coaches for their respective performances during the 2017 season.

 

Vazquez, who was named the menís soccer teamís MVP, was also a First Team All-Little East selection. He played in 19 games, starting all of them. Vazquez had eight goals and five assists for 21 points on the season. He led the team and was third in the LEC in scoring. His eight goals ranked him third in the league, while his five assists had him fourth in the conference.

Vazquez recorded a pair of two-goal games and notched three-game winners. He put in the game-winner in a 1-0 win at Eastern Connecticut on Sept. 16 and a 3-2 win at home against Southern Maine on Sept. 23. He also netted the game-winner in the teamís, 2-0, win over UMass Boston in the semifinals of the LEC Championship on Nov. 1. Vazquez was named the Little East Offensive Player of the Week once on the season.

 

 Dogbey earns his third All-England honor. He was a First Team All-N.E. selection as a junior in 2016 and received a Second Team All-N.E. award as a sophomore in 2015. As a senior in 2017, Dogbey was named First Team All-Little East. He is a three-time First Team All-LEC selection (2015, 2016, 2017) and was a Second Team All-LEC honoree as a freshman (2014).

 

He played in 18 games, starting all of them. Dogbey has seven goals and two assists for 16 points. Dogbey was second on the team and fifth in the Little East in scoring on the year. His seven goals also ranked him fifth in the league. He tallied the game-winner in the teamís, 1-0, victory against UMass Dartmouth on Oct. 7 and also netted the game-winner in the clubís, 3-2, win over Plymouth State on Oct. 28 that clinched a share of the LEC Regular Season Championship. Dogbey was named the Little East Offensive Player of the Week once on the season.

Head Coach John Melloís team finished the season with a 9-8-2 overall record and a 5-2 (first place tie) in the Little East Conference. The Anchormen claimed a share of the 2017 Little East Regular Season Championship for the second straight season. After vanquishing long-time rival and third seed UMass Boston, 2-0, in the semifinals of the Little East Championship on Nov. 1, RIC lost, 1-0, to top seed and host Western Connecticut in the title contest on Nov. 4.
