Rhode Island College Fall Sports Update #7

 

Men’s Soccer
(4-10-2 Overall, 2-3-1 in the Little East)

 

Providence, RI—Head Coach Len Mercurio’s team is 4-10-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the Little East Conference. This past week, the Anchormen picked up two consecutive wins at home before suffering a loss on the road. RIC defeated Western Connecticut State University 2-0 on Tuesday, Oct. 16 and won against Bridgewater State College 3-2 in overtime on Thursday, Oct. 18. The Anchormen fell to Plymouth State College 6-1 on Saturday, October 20.

 

Senior midfielder Alex Gracia (West Warwick, RI) has played in eleven games, starting one of them. He scored his first collegiate goal, a game-winner in overtime, to lead the Anchormen past Bridgewater State on Oct. 18. He has one goal for two points on the season.

 

Junior forward Scott Main (Exeter, RI) has played in 16 games, starting 15 of them. He has eight goals and three assists for 19 points on the season. Main has two game-winning goals to his credit.

 

Freshman defender Mike Maciel (East Providence, RI) has played in thirteen games, starting twelve of them. Maciel has two goals for four points.

 

Senior midfielder Pete Ceprano (Hope, RI) has played in 16 games, starting 15 of them. He has one goal and four assists for six points.

 

Junior sweeper James Williamson (North Kingstown, RI) has played in 14 games, starting all of them. He has two goals and one assist for five points on the season.

 

Senior midfielder Ivo Luis (East Providence, RI) has played in 15 games, starting all of them. He has one goal and two assists for four points.

 

Sophomore midfielder Brian Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) has played in 11 games, starting eight of them. He has one game-winning goal and two assists for four points.

 

Sophomore midfielder Johan Calderon (Pawtucket, RI) has played in 15 games, starting 13 of them. He has one goal and two assists for four points.

 

Senior goalkeeper Carlos Pinhancos (Cumberland, RI) has played in 15 games, starting 15 of them. He owns a 1.44 goals-against average, a .798 save percentage and has made 83 saves on the season. Pinhancos has logged 1,317 minutes and has three shutouts.

 

Freshman midfielder Jason Nelson (Pascoag, RI) has played in seven games, starting one. As a goalkeeper, Nelson has logged 174 minutes with a 4.14 goals-against average, a .652 save percentage and has made 15 saves on the season.

 

Sophomore Joe Burns (Ashaway, RI) and freshman Christopher Furey (Cabot, VT) are reserve goalkeepers on the team. Furey is still recovering from a broken hand he suffered over the summer.

 

Sophomore stopper Josh Nelson (Pascoag, RI) has played in 16 games, starting all of them. He has one assist for one point on the season.

 

Sophomore forward Craig Bannon (Harrisville, RI) has played in 14 games, starting ten of them. He scored his first goal of the season against Bridgewater State on Oct. 18. He has one goal for two points on the season.

 

Freshman midfielder German Cardona (Pawtucket, RI) has played in nine games, starting five of them. He has one goal for two points.

 

Junior defender Rob Williamson (Greenville, RI) has played in seven games, starting all of them. Junior defender Christopher Enright (Barrington, RI) has played in eleven games, starting one of them. Freshman defender Matthew Lambert (Woonsocket, RI) has played in ten games, starting eight of them.

 

In upcoming action, RIC will face Salve Regina on Tuesday, Oct. 23. The Anchormen will host Wentworth on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 3:30 before traveling to Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday, Oct. 27.

 

 

 

Women’s Soccer
(8-6-2 Overall, 3-3-1 in the Little East)

 

Head Coach Nicole Barber’s team is 8-6-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the Little East Conference. RIC suffered two losses this week, making it three in a row for the Anchorwomen. RIC fell to Western Connecticut State University 1-0 on Tuesday, Oct. 16 and to Plymouth State, in a heartbreaking 3-2 loss that was decided in the very last minute of double-overtime play, on Saturday, Oct. 20. The team needs one more win to tie the program’s record for most wins in a season (nine, set in 1999).

 

Senior forward Kerri Ferreira (Bristol, RI) has played in 15 games, starting all of them. She has ten goals and nine assists for 29 points. She has three game-winning goals to her credit.

 

Freshman midfielder Alexis Bouchard (Warren, RI) has played in 16 games, starting all of them. She has ten goals and three assists for 23 points. She has three game-winning goals to her credit.

 

Senior forward/midfielder Caitlin Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) has played in 15 games, starting all of them.  She has three goals and seven assists for 13 points on the season.

 

Freshman goalkeeper/midfielder Jamie Hinman (Burlington, CT) has played in 16 games, starting one.  She owns a 1.36 goals-against average, a .917 save percentage and has made 11 saves in 66 minutes of action. In the field, she has five goals and one assist for 11 points on the season.

 

Freshman midfielder/forward Sadie Beaudet (Chepachet, RI) has played in 15 games, starting nine of them. She has four goals for eight points.

 

Freshman defender Melissa Skodras (Warwick, RI) has played in 16 games, starting 14 of them. She has two goals, one of which was a game-winner, and an assist for five points.

 

Freshman midfielder/forward Laura Steere (Pascoag, RI) has played in 14 games, starting one. She has two goals and one assist for five points on the season.

 

Junior midfielder Allison Vales (Bristol, RI) has played in 16 games, starting all of them.  She has one goal and two assists for four points on the season.

 

Freshman forward/midfielder Elena Sanborn (North Scituate, RI) has played in 16 games, starting all of them. She has one goal, a game-winner, and an assist for three points. 

 

Freshman goalkeeper Melissa Carpentier (Woonsocket, RI) has played in 16 games, starting all of them. She owns a 1.23 goals-against average, a .873 save percentage and has made 137 saves on the season. Carpentier has earned six shutouts and has played 1,463 minutes.

 

Senior forward Rena Rossi (Cranston, RI) has played in two games. She has one goal for two points on the season.

 

Sophomore forward/midfielder Ololade Falola (Coventry, RI) has played in 15 games, starting six of them. She has one goal for two points on the season. Sophomore Audrey Hinman (Burlington, CT) has played in four games.

 

Sophomore midfielder/defender Kim Wood (Little Compton, RI) has played in 16 games, starting all of them. She has one assist for one point on the season.

 

Sophomore defender Malissa Holden (Warwick, RI) has played in 16 games, starting all of them. She has one assist for one point. Sophomore defender/midfielder Kristen Pellerin (Cumberland, RI) has played in 14 games, starting eight of them. Freshman defender Courtney Gardiner (Warwick, RI) has played in 16 games, starting 11 of them. Freshman defender Kristine Boyko (Blackstone, MA) has played in five games.

 

In upcoming action, RIC will host Plymouth State College on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 3:30 p.m. in the first round of Little East Conference Tournament play.

 

 

 

Women’s Tennis
(12-3 Overall, 4-1 in the Little East; 2001 Little East Conference Champions)

 

The Rhode Island College women’s tennis team defeated Clark University on the road on Wednesday, Oct. 17 in a close 5-4 match before competing in the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) on Saturday and Sunday Oct. 20 and 21. The Anchorwomen placed 20th at the tournament with 0.5 points to close out the ’01 season.

Junior Carminda Rocha (East Providence, RI) was 15-2 (.882) at number two singles and 13-4 (.765) at number one doubles for a team high 21.5 points on the season.

 

Sophomore Samantha Hedden (Rumford, RI) was 10-9 (.526) at number four singles and 9-9 (.500) at number three doubles for 14.5 points on the season.

 

Freshman Meghan Mooney (North Scituate, RI) was 13-2 (.923) at number five singles and 11-3 (.786) at number two doubles for 18.5 points on the season.

 

Junior Donna Vongratsavay (North Providence, RI) was 12-6 (.667) at number three singles and 13-3 (.813) at number two doubles for 18.5 points on the season.

 

Senior co-captain Cynthia Murray (Brooklyn, CT), RIC’s all-time leader in career points, singles wins and doubles wins, was 12-6 (.667) at number one singles and 13-5 (.772) at number one doubles for 18.5 points on the season.

Senior co-captain Courtney Chauvette (West Warwick, RI) was 8-7 (.533) at number six singles and 8-8 (.500) at number three doubles for 12.0 points on the season.

 

Sophomore Kristin Mandsager (Portsmouth, RI) was 4-1 (.800) in singles and 2-1 (.667) in doubles for 5.0 points on the season.

 

Sophomore Amy Lancellotta (West Warwick, RI) was 0-1 (.000) in singles and 1-1 (.500) in doubles for 0.5 points on the season.

 

Junior Beth Lardaro (Peace Dale, RI) was a reserve on the team.

 

 

Women’s Volleyball
(10-20 Overall, 2-5 in the Little East)

 

Head Coach Kristen Norberg’s team is 10-20 overall and 2-5 in the Little East Conference. The Anchorwomen picked up alternating wins and losses this past week. RIC defeated Pine Manor 3-0 at home on Tuesday, Oct. 16 and lost to Endicott on the road, 3-0, on Thursday, Oct. 18. At the Little East Round Robin Tournament, held at Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday, Oct. 20, RIC defeated Southern Maine 3-2 before losing to Plymouth State 3-1. The Anchorwomen are hoping Western Connecticut State University, the number one team in the conference, will defeat Keene State College this Friday, Oct. 26 at Keene. If the Colonials win, RIC will earn a berth in the LEC Tournament.

 

Senior middle hitter Brandee Trainer (North Kingstown, RI) has played in 101 games in 29 matches. She has 268 kills (2.653/game), a .260 hitting percentage, eight assists (0.079/game), 46 service aces (0.455/game), 143 digs (1.416/game) and 84 blocks (0.832/game).

 

Senior middle hitter Erica Waltonen (West Greenwich, RI) has played in 108 games in 30 matches. She has 223 kills (2.065/game), a .210 hitting percentage, 14 assists (0.130/game), 48 service aces (0.444/game), 229 digs (2.120/game) and 54 blocks (0.500/game).

 

Senior setter Kim Lebrun (Woonsocket, RI) has played in 105 games in 29 matches. She has 70 kills (.667/game), a .131 hitting percentage, 383 assists (3.648 /game), 30 service aces (0.286/game), 149 digs (1.419/game) and 23 blocks (0.219/game).

 

Junior outside hitter Stephanie Callaghan (Warwick, RI) has played in 104 games in 29 matches. She has 151 kills (1.452/game), a .195 hitting percentage, 19 assists (0.183/game), 24 service aces (0.231/game), 200 digs (1.923/game) and 12 blocks (0.115/game).

 

Sophomore outside hitter Vicky Bilalyan (Cranston, RI) has played in 90 games in 29 matches. She has 69 kills (0.767/game), a .087 hitting percentage, nine assists (0.100/game), two service aces (0.022/game), 56 digs (.622/game) and 12 blocks (0.133/game).

 

Junior setter Susan Chiu (Belmont, NH) has played in 83 games in 30 matches. She has two kills (0.024/game), a .000 hitting percentage, 98 assists (1.181/game), 12 service aces (0.145/game), 145 digs (1.747/game) and no blocks (0.000/game).

 

Sophomore outside hitter Erica Poirier (Woonsocket, RI) has played in 72 games in 23 matches. She has 65 kills (0.903/game), a .098 hitting percentage, 15 assists (0.208/game), 17 service aces (0.236/game), 22 digs (0.306/game) and 20 blocks (0.278/game).

 

Freshman hitter Kristen Bibeault (Woonsocket, RI) has played in 70 games in 25 matches. She has 42 kills (0.600/game), a .095 hitting percentage, three assists (0.043/game), two service aces (0.029/game), 42 digs (0.600/game) and eight blocks (0.114/game).

Men’s Cross Country

 

Head Coach Dick Hoppman’s team competed at the Eastern Nazarene Invitational Saturday, Oct. 20. The Anchormen placed first, out of three teams, with a near perfect score of 18 points.

 

Junior Tim Rudd (Warwick, RI) placed first with a time of 28:31.

 

Senior co-captain Nick Alfred (Wakefield, RI) placed second with a time of 31:29.

 

Freshman Ruben Feliz (Providence, RI) placed third with a time of 31:39.

 

Freshman Mike Daniels (Warwick, RI) placed fifth with a time of 31:54.

 

Junior co-captain Chris Puleo (Barrington, RI) placed seventh with a time of 33:59.

 

Sophomore Joe Giardina (West Warwick, RI) placed tenth with a time of 34:58.

 

Sophomore John Charest (North Smithfield, RI) placed 11th with a time of 35:32.

 

In upcoming action, RIC will run at the LEC/Alliance Championships at UMASS-Dartmouth on Saturday, Oct. 27.

 

 

 

Women’s Cross Country

 

Head Coach Matt Hird’s team competed at the Eastern Nazarene Invitational Saturday, Oct. 20. RIC did not enter a full scoring squad. Salve Regina won the meet with 20 points.

 

Sophomore Michelle Boudreau (Lincoln, RI) placed third (21 competitors) with a time of 20:53.

 

In upcoming action, RIC will run at the LEC/Alliance Championships at UMASS-Dartmouth on Saturday, Oct. 27.
