Rhode Island College Fall Sports Update #8

Men’s Soccer
(4-11-4 Overall, 2-3-2 in the Little East)

Providence, RI—Head Coach Len Mercurio’s team is 4-11-4 overall and 2-3-2 in the Little East Conference. This past week, the Anchormen picked up a loss sandwiched between two ties. RIC played a scoreless overtime game against Salve Regina in Newport on Oct. 23, lost to Wentworth at home, 1-0, on Oct. 25, and tied Eastern Connecticut 1-1 in an overtime road game on Oct. 27.

Junior forward Scott Main (Exeter, RI) has played in 19 games, starting 17 of them. He has eight goals and three assists for 19 points on the season. Main has two game-winning goals to his credit.

Freshman defender Mike Maciel (East Providence, RI) has played in 16 games, starting 15 of them. Maciel has two goals for four points.

Senior midfielder Pete Ceprano (Hope, RI) has played in 19 games, starting 18 of them. He has one goal and five assists for seven points.

Junior sweeper James Williamson (North Kingstown, RI) has played in 16 games, starting all of them. He has three goals and one assist for seven points on the season.

Senior midfielder Ivo Luis (East Providence, RI) has played in 16 games, starting 16 of them. He has one goal and two assists for four points.

Sophomore midfielder Brian Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) has played in 11 games, starting eight of them. He has one game-winning goal and two assists for four points.

Sophomore midfielder Johan Calderon (Pawtucket, RI) has played in 18 games, starting 15 of them. He has one goal and two assists for four points.

Senior midfielder Alex Gracia (West Warwick, RI) has played in 13 games, starting two of them. He has one goal for two points on the season.

Senior goalkeeper Carlos Pinhancos (Cumberland, RI) has played in 18 games, starting 17 of them. He owns a 1.29 goals-against average, a .820 save percentage and has made 105 saves on the season. Pinhancos has logged 1,602 minutes and has three shutouts.

Freshman midfielder Jason Nelson (Pascoag, RI) has played in nine games, starting one. As a goalkeeper, Nelson has logged 219 minutes with an 3.29 goals-against average, a .703 save percentage and has made 19 saves on the season.

Sophomore Joe Burns (Ashaway, RI) and freshman Christopher Furey (Cabot, VT) are reserve goalkeepers on the team. Furey is still recovering from a broken hand he suffered over the summer.

Sophomore stopper Josh Nelson (Pascoag, RI) has played in 19 games, starting all of them. He has one assist for one point on the season.

Sophomore forward Craig Bannon (Harrisville, RI) has played in 17 games, starting twelve of them. He has one goal for two points on the season.

Freshman midfielder German Cardona (Pawtucket, RI) has played in 11 games, starting six of them. He has one goal for two points.

Junior defender Rob Williamson (Greenville, RI) has played in ten games, starting all of them. Junior defender Christopher Enright (Barrington, RI) has played in eleven games, starting one of them. Freshman defender Matthew Lambert (Woonsocket, RI) has played in 13 games, starting 11 of them.

In upcoming action, number four seeded RIC will host number five seeded Western Connecticut on Tuesday, Oct. 30 in the first round of the Little East Conference Tournament.

 

Women’s Soccer
(8-7-2 Overall, 3-3-1 in the Little East)

Head Coach Nicole Barber’s team finished its 2001 campaign 8-7-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the Little East Conference. This season was one of Rhode Island College women’s soccer team’s most successful in the program’s seven-year history. The Anchorwomen were eliminated from the 2001 LEC Tournament with a 6-1 loss to Plymouth State College on Oct. 23.

RIC qualified for the Little East Conference Tournament for only the second time and hosted a first round game for the first time ever in the program’s history. The ’01 campaign was also the team’s second winning season ever [1999].

Senior forward Kerri Ferreira (Bristol, RI) played in 16 games, starting all of them. She had ten goals and nine assists for 29 points. She had three game-winning goals to her credit.

Freshman midfielder Alexis Bouchard (Warren, RI) played in 17 games, starting all of them. She had ten goals and three assists for 23 points. She had three game-winning goals to her credit.

Senior forward/midfielder Caitlin Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) played in 16 games, starting all of them. She had three goals and seven assists for 13 points on the season.

Freshman goalkeeper/midfielder Jamie Hinman (Burlington, CT) played in 17 games, starting one. She owned a 1.36 goals-against average, a .917 save percentage and made 11 saves in 66 minutes of action. In the field, she had five goals and one assist for 11 points on the season.

Freshman midfielder/forward Sadie Beaudet (Chepachet, RI) played in 16 games, starting nine of them. She had five goals for ten points.

Freshman defender Melissa Skodras (Warwick, RI) played in 17 games, starting 15 of them. She had two goals, one of which was a game-winner, and an assist for five points.

Freshman midfielder/forward Laura Steere (Pascoag, RI) played in 15 games, starting one. She had two goals and one assist for five points on the season.

Junior midfielder Allison Vales (Bristol, RI) played in 16 games, starting all of them. She had one goal and two assists for four points on the season.

Freshman forward/midfielder Elena Sanborn (North Scituate, RI) played in 17 games, starting all of them. She had one goal, a game-winner, and an assist for three points.

Freshman goalkeeper Melissa Carpentier (Woonsocket, RI) played in 17 games, starting all of them. She owned a 1.51 goals-against average, a .848 save percentage and made 145 saves on the season. Carpentier earned six shutouts and played 1,553 minutes.

Senior forward Rena Rossi (Cranston, RI) played in two games. She had one goal for two points on the season.

Sophomore forward/midfielder Ololade Falola (Coventry, RI) played in 16 games, starting six of them. She had one goal for two points on the season. Sophomore Audrey Hinman (Burlington, CT) played in four games.

Sophomore midfielder/defender Kim Wood (Little Compton, RI) played in 17 games, starting all of them. She had one assist for one point on the season.

Sophomore defender Malissa Holden (Warwick, RI) played in 17 games, starting all of them. She had one assist for one point. Sophomore defender/midfielder Kristen Pellerin (Cumberland, RI) played in 15 games, starting nine of them. Freshman defender Courtney Gardiner (Warwick, RI) played in 17 games, starting 12 of them. Freshman defender Kristine Boyko (Blackstone, MA) played in five games.

 

Women’s Volleyball
(11-20 Overall, 2-5 in the Little East)

Head Coach Kristen Norberg’s team is 11-20 overall and 2-5 in the Little East Conference. This week the Anchorwomen defeated Roger Williams University at home, 3-2. RIC also secured a spot in the LEC Tournament thanks to Western Connecticut State University, whose victory over Keene State on Oct. 26 clinched RIC’s slot in tournament action.

Senior middle hitter Brandee Trainer (North Kingstown, RI) has played in 106 games in 30 matches. She has 280 kills (2.642/game), a .261 hitting percentage, nine assists (0.085/game), 48 service aces (0.453/game), 147 digs (1.387/game) and 89 blocks (0.840/game).

Senior middle hitter Erica Waltonen (West Greenwich, RI) has played in 113 games in 31 matches. She has 238 kills (2.106/game), a .209 hitting percentage, 14 assists (0.124/game), 52 service aces (0.453/game), 246 digs (2.177/game) and 55 blocks (0.487/game).

Senior setter Kim Lebrun (Woonsocket, RI) has played in 110 games in 30 matches. She has 71 kills (.645/game), a .122 hitting percentage, 411 assists (3.736 /game), 33 service aces (0.300/game), 151 digs (1.373/game) and 23 blocks (0.209/game).

Junior outside hitter Stephanie Callaghan (Warwick, RI) has played in 109 games in 30 matches. She has 159 kills (1.459/game), a .200 hitting percentage, 20 assists (0.183/game), 24 service aces (0.220/game), 213 digs (1.954/game) and 13 blocks (0.119/game).

Sophomore outside hitter Vicky Bilalyan (Cranston, RI) has played in 92 games in 30 matches. She has 70 kills (0.761/game), a .086 hitting percentage, nine assists (0.098/game), two service aces (0.022/game), 57 digs (.620/game) and 12 blocks (0.130/game).

Junior setter Susan Chiu (Belmont, NH) has played in 88 games in 31 matches. She has two kills (0.023/game), a .000 hitting percentage, 98 assists (1.114/game), 12 service aces (0.136/game), 148 digs (1.62/game) and no blocks (0.000/game).

Sophomore outside hitter Erica Poirier (Woonsocket, RI) has played in 72 games in 23 matches. She has 65 kills (0.903/game), a .098 hitting percentage, 15 assists (0.208/game), 17 service aces (0.236/game), 22 digs (0.306/game) and 20 blocks (0.278/game).

Freshman hitter Kristen Bibeault (Woonsocket, RI) has played in 74 games in 26 matches. She has 44 kills (0.595/game), a .086 hitting percentage, four assists (0.054/game), two service aces (0.027/game), 43 digs (0.581/game) and nine blocks (0.122/game).

Sophomore defender Jennifer Cyr (Bristol, RI) has played in 21 games in 11 matches. She has no kills (0.000/game), a .000 hitting percentage, one assist (0.048/game), no service aces (0.000/game), 12 digs (.571/game) and no blocks (0.000/game).

Freshman defender/setter Katherine Darash (Port Chester, NY) has played in ten games in seven matches. She has no kills (0.000/game), a .000 hitting percentage, no assists (0.000/game), no service aces (0.000/game), one dig (0.100/game) and no blocks (0.000/game).

Freshman defender/hitter Danielle Beaudry (West Greenwich, RI) has played in 31 games in 18 matches. She has one kill (0.032/game), a 1.000 hitting percentage, no assists (0.000/game), seven service aces (0.226/game), 25 digs (0.806/game) and no blocks (0.000/game).

Freshman setter Corinne-Marie Gervais (Woonsocket, RI) has played in three games in three matches. She has no kills (0.000/game), a .000 hitting percentage, no assists (0.000/game), no service aces (0.000/game), no digs (0.000/game) and one block (0.333/game).

Freshman defender Julia Longo (Somersworth, NH) is a reserve on the team.

In upcoming action, RIC will play at UMASS-Dartmouth on Wednesday, Oct. 31 in the first round of the LEC Tournament.

 

Men’s Cross Country

Head Coach Dick Hoppman’s team competed at the New England Alliance/Little East Conference Championship on Saturday, Oct. 27. The Anchormen placed eighth overall (out of 10 teams) with 207 points and fifth in the Little East Conference (out of five teams) with 123 points. Keene State won the meet overall as well as within LEC competition.

Junior Tim Rudd (Warwick, RI) was named All-Alliance, placing 17th with a time of 26:46.

Freshman Joe Parenteau (Smithfield, RI) placed 27th with a time of 27:15.

Freshman Mike Daniels (Warwick, RI) placed 55th with a time of 28:54.

Freshman Ruben Feliz (Providence, RI) placed 62nd with a time of 29:29.

Junior Rob Geremia (Kingston, RI) placed 72nd with a time of 30:40.

Senior co-captain Nick Alfred (Wakefield, RI) placed 75th with a time of 30:48.

Junior co-captain Chris Puleo (Barrington, RI) placed 81st with a time of 31:41.

Sophomore Joe Giardina (West Warwick, RI) placed 83rd with a time of 33:10.

Junior Brian Carney (Barrington, RI) placed 87th with a time of 38:30.

In upcoming action, RIC will run at the ECAC Championships on Saturday, Nov. 3.
