Rhode Island College Winter Sports Update #1

Men’s Basketball
(0-3 Overall, 0-0 in the Little East)

Providence, RI—First-year Head Coach Mike Kelly’s Anchormen are 0-3 overall and have yet to see action in the Little East Conference.

The Anchormen went 0-3 last week, falling to Western New England College 91-75 and Hartwick College 76-71 during their season-opening weekend at the Hartwick Holiday Classic in Oneonta, NY on Nov. 16 and 17. RIC dropped its first home game of the 2001-02 campaign, falling 82-62 against Salve Regina University on Nov. 20.

Freshman forward Kevin Payette (Woonsocket, RI) has played in three games. He is averaging 11.0 points, 1.7 rebounds, 0.7 assists, 0.3 blocks and 1.0 steals per game. Payette was RIC’s leading scorer against Salve Regina with 13 points.

Junior guard James Heady (Bridgeport, CT) has played in three games, starting all of them. He is averaging 8.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 0.3 blocks and 0.7 steals per game. Heady was named to the Hartwick Holiday Classic’s All-Tournament Team. He scored ten points with two rebounds, two assists and one steal in the Anchormen’s 91-75 loss to Western New England on Nov. 16. He chipped in with ten points, seven boards, three assists, one steal and a block in RIC’s 76-71 loss to Hartwick in the consolation game on Nov. 17.

Sophomore forward Mike Costigan (Pawtucket, RI) has played in three games, starting all of them. He is averaging 8.3 points, 1.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.7 steals per game.

Freshman forward Jason Harris (Bedford, MA) has played in three games. He is averaging 6.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 0.7 assists, 0.3 blocks and 0.3 steals per game.

Senior guard Mike Monahan (Johnston, RI) has played in three games. He is averaging 5.7 points, 1.7 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game.

Freshman guard Evan Bryant (Norwalk, CT) has played in three games. He is averaging 5.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 0.3 blocks per game.

Freshman forward Ian Robertson (Naugatuck, CT) has played in three games, starting all of them. He is averaging 4.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 0.7 assists and 0.7 blocks per game.

Junior guard Eric Britto (Riverside, RI) has played in three games. He is averaging 3.7 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 0.3 blocks and 0.7 steals per game.

Junior guard Pete Mollo (North Providence, RI) has played in three games, starting all of them. He is averaging 2.7 points, 1.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.

Freshman forward Raleigh Brennan (Middletown, RI) has played in three games. He is averaging 2.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 0.3 steals per game.

Senior forward Scott Main (Exeter, RI) has played in three games. He is averaging 2.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 0.7 steals per game.

Freshman guard Greg Bushey (Hudson, NH) has played in three games. He is averaging 1.7 points, 0.3 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game.

Sophomore forward Matt Records (East Greenwich, RI) has yet to see action this season.

In upcoming action, RIC will play at Eastern Nazarene College on Nov. 27 at 8 p.m., at Roger Williams University on Nov. 29 at 8 p.m. and will host Little East Conference rival Eastern Connecticut on Dec. 1 at 3 p.m.

 

Women’s Basketball

(1-2 Overall, 0-0 in the Little East)

Head Coach Mike Kelley’s team is 1-2 overall and has yet to see action in the Little East Conference.

The Anchorwomen came out of the Skidmore Tip-off Tournament in North Saratoga, NY on Nov. 17 and 18 with a .500 record, then dropped their home opener to Salve Regina University on Nov. 20.

At Skidmore, RIC fell to the host school 57-54 before picking up its first win of the season, 52-43 against Coast Guard, the following day. Back at home, RIC suffered a 67-45 loss to Salve Regina.

Sophomore guard Monyca Vickers (Mattapoisett, MA) was named to the Skidmore Tip-Off Tournament’s All-Tournament Team last week. Vickers was RIC’s leading rebounder in both of the Anchorwomen’s games during the tournament, racking up seven rebounds against host Skidmore and grabbing 11 more against Coast Guard. Vickers pumped in a team-high 22 points in the win over Coast Guard. She pitched in with eight points in the opening round loss to Skidmore. She has played in three games, starting two of them. She is averaging 11.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 2.0 steals per game.

Sophomore forward Elizabeth Shields (Warwick, RI) has played in three games, starting all of them. She is averaging 10.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.7 blocks and 1.0 steals per game.

Sophomore guard Katie Hansen (Narragansett, RI) has played in three games, starting all of them. She is averaging 6.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 4.0 steals per game.

Senior forward Melanie Wolf (Gorham, NH) has played in three games, starting all of them. She is averaging 6.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, 0.7 assists and 1.0 steals per game. Wolf was RIC’s leading scorer against Salve Regina with 11 points.

Sophomore guard Angela Sarette (Putnam, CT) has played in three games, starting one of them. She is averaging 4.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 0.7 assists, 0.7 blocks and 1.7 steals per game.

Sophomore guard Tara Mekuto (Providence, RI) has played in three games. She is averaging 4.3 points, 1.0 rebounds, 0.3 assists and 0.7 steals per game.

Freshman guard Rebecca Bissonnette (Danielson, CT) has played in three games, starting all of them. She is averaging 4.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game.

Sophomore guard Abby Ferri (Greene, RI) has played in three games. She is averaging 2.7 points, 1.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game.

Junior guard Pamela Kelly (West Hartford, CT) has played in three games. She is averaging 0.3 points and 0.3 rebounds per game.

Junior guard Alicia Hersperger (Providence, RI) has played in two games. She is averaging 0.5 rebounds and 0.3 steals per game.

Freshman forward Elizabeth Valeika (Woonsocket, RI) has played in one game. She is averaging 1.0 rebounds per game.

Freshman guard/forward Kate Capron (Glocester, RI) has yet to see action this season due to a knee injury.

In upcoming action, RIC will host Wesleyan University on Nov. 27 at 7 p.m., play at Roger Williams on November 29 at 6 p.m. and host Little East Conference opponent Eastern Connecticut on Dec. 1 at 1 p.m.

 

Wrestling

(0-0 overall; 0-0 in the NECCWA; 0-0 in the Pilgrim League)

Head Coach Jay Jones’ Anchormen have competed in two tournaments so far this season, placing 10th (15 teams) with 56 points at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 10 and 14th (18 teams) with 26 points at the Doug Parker Invitational held at Springfield College on Nov. 17.

Sophomore Walter Borden (East Providence, RI) is 1-4 at 165 pounds with six points, one takedown, one reversal, 14 escapes and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Patrick DeThomas (Harrisville, RI) is 0-2 at 184 pounds with two takedowns, one reversal and one escape on the year.

Sophomore Gerry D’Arezzo (Cranston, RI) is 0-2 at 285 pounds with one takedown, one reversal and one escape on the year.

Freshman Justin Deveau (North Attleboro, MA) placed third at 197 pounds at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 10. He is 6-3 at 197 pounds with 23 points, 13 takedowns, two reversals, nine escapes, five near-falls and one win by fall on the year.

Sophomore Luke Emmons (West Greenwich, RI) is 3-4 at 141 pounds with 15 points, seven takedowns, two reversals, six escapes, two near-falls and two wins by fall on the year.

Freshman Ed German (Providence, RI) is 2-4 at 125 pounds with six points, five takedowns and nine escapes on the year.

Freshman Jordan Goor (Lowell, MA) is 0-4 at 285 pounds with three takedowns, one reversal and four escapes on the year.

Freshman Matt Kelly (Carver, MA) is 2-4 at 141 and 149 pounds with nine points, one takedown, two reversals, ten escapes and two near-falls on the year.

Freshman Andre LaBonte (Harrisville, RI) is 0-4 at 197 pounds with one reversal and two escapes on the year.

Freshman Gerard LaBonte (Harrisville, RI) is 3-4 at 165 and 174 pounds with 13 points, eight takedowns, seven reversals, 11 escapes, three near-falls and one win by fall on the year.

Senior Chad Lampert (Georgetown, MA) is 2-4 at 141 pounds with eight points, six takedowns, two reversals, seven escapes and four near-falls on the year.

Freshman Jerard Melito (Medford, NY) is 1-2 at 165 pounds with six points, six takedowns, four escapes, one near-fall and one win by fall on the year.

Senior Mike Penza (Cranston, RI) is 1-4 at 157 pounds with six points, one reversal, 13 escapes, one near-fall and one win by fall on the year.

Junior Mike Riley (Lowell, MA) placed third at 133 pounds at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 10 and fourth at the Doug Parker Invitational at Springfield College on Nov. 17. He is 9-3 at 133 pounds with 39 points, 38 takedowns, four reversals, 16 escapes, one near-fall and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Tim Robblee (Wakefield, MA) is 0-4 at 157 and 174 pounds with one takedown, one reversal, three escapes and one near-fall on the year.

Freshman Colin Sepko (Southington, CT) is 3-4 at 184 and 197 pounds with 18 points, five takedowns, two escapes and three wins by fall on the year.

Freshman Mike Skaling (Greene, RI) is 0-4 at 157 pounds with two escapes on the year.

Freshman Mike Vieira (Narragansett, RI) is 1-4 at 125 pounds with three points, two takedowns, two reversals and five escapes on the year.

Freshmen Todd Bloom (Wantagh, NY) and Mike LoSasso (Riverside, RI) have yet to see action this season.

In upcoming action, the Anchormen will compete at the Scranton Invitational on Dec. 1.
