Rhode Island College Winter Sports Update #2

Men’s Basketball
(0-8 Overall, 0-2 in the Little East)

Providence, RI—First-year Head Coach Mike Kelly’s Anchormen are 0-8 overall and 0-2 in the Little East Conference.

The Anchormen dropped two games last week, falling to Coast Guard 90-61 on Tuesday, Dec. 4. at home and to UMASS-Boston 83-79 on Saturday, Dec. 8 on the road.

Freshman forward Kevin Payette (Woonsocket, RI) has played in eight games, starting four of them. He is averaging 10.1 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 1.5 steals per game. Payette was RIC’s leading scorer against UMASS-Boston with a career-high 21 points.

Junior guard James Heady (Bridgeport, CT) has played in eight games, starting five of them. He is averaging 7.0 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.

Sophomore forward Mike Costigan (Pawtucket, RI) has played in eight games, starting five of them. He is averaging 6.4 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.

Freshman forward Jason Harris (Bedford, MA) has played in eight games, starting four of them. He is averaging 7.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game.

Senior guard Mike Monahan (Johnston, RI) has played in six games. He is averaging 3.2 points and 1.3 points per game.

Freshman guard Evan Bryant (Norwalk, CT) has played in eight games. He is averaging 4.0 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.

Freshman forward Ian Robertson (Naugatuck, CT) has played in eight games, starting four of them. He is averaging 4.9 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. Robertson was RIC’s leading scorer against Coast Guard on Dec. 4 with a career-high 13 points.

Junior guard Eric Britto (Riverside, RI) has played in eight games, starting two of them. He is averaging 6.0 points, 1.9 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.0 steals per game.

Junior guard Pete Mollo (North Providence, RI) has played in eight games, starting all of them. He is averaging 6.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.

Freshman forward Raleigh Brennan (Middletown, RI) has played in eight games. He is averaging 2.2 points and 2.1 rebounds per game.

Senior forward Scott Main (Exeter, RI) has missed the club’s last three games with a leg infection. Main played in five games, starting one of them. He is averaging 1.8 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game.

Freshman guard Greg Bushey (Hudson, NH) has played in seven games. He is averaging 2.0 points and 1.3 assists per game.

Sophomore forward Matt Records (East Greenwich, RI) has played in four games. He is averaging 1.0 point per game.

In upcoming action, RIC will play at Johnson & Wales on Dec. 11 at 7:30 p.m.

 

Women’s Basketball
(2-6 Overall, 0-2 in the Little East)

Head Coach Mike Kelley’s team is 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the Little East Conference.

The Anchorwomen snapped a four-game losing streak with a 55-43 victory over Pine Manor on Tuesday, Dec. 4 before falling to LEC rival UMASS-Boston 62-54 on Saturday, Dec. 8.

Sophomore forward Elizabeth Shields (Warwick, RI) has played in eight games, starting all of them. She is averaging 9.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.4 blocks and 1.3 steals per game.

Sophomore guard Monyca Vickers (Mattapoisett, MA) is out indefinitely after suffering a severely broken nose in the Pine Manor game. Vickers has played in seven games, starting six of them. She was averaging 7.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game prior to the injury.

Sophomore guard Katie Hansen (Narragansett, RI) has played in eight games, starting all of them. She is averaging 9.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.6 steals per game. Hansen was RIC’s leading scorer in the win over Pine Manor with a career-high 18 points.

Senior forward Melanie Wolf (Gorham, NH) has played in eight games, starting all of them. The co-captain is averaging 4.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.

Sophomore guard Angela Sarette (Putnam, CT) has played in eight games, starting one of them. She is averaging 6.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.0 blocks and 1.6 steals per game.

Sophomore guard Tara Mekuto (Providence, RI) has played in eight games, starting one of them. She is averaging 3.5 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game.

Freshman guard Becca Bissonnette (Danielson, CT) has played in eight games, starting all of them. She is averaging 5.2 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Bissonnette was RIC’s leading scorer against UMASS-Boston with a career-high 19 points.

Sophomore guard Abby Ferri (Greene, RI) has played in eight games. She is averaging 2.8 points, 2.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.8 steals per game.

Junior guard Pamela Kelly (West Hartford, CT) has played in eight games. The co-captain is averaging 1.0 point per game.

Junior guard Alicia Hersperger (Providence, RI) has played in five games.

Freshman forward Elizabeth Valeika (Woonsocket, RI) has played in three games.

In upcoming action, RIC will play at Johnson & Wales on Dec. 11 at 5:30 p.m. and host LEC rival Keene State on Dec. 15 at 1 p.m.

 

Wrestling

(1-1 overall; 0-1 in the NECCWA; 0-0 in the Pilgrim League)

Head Coach Jay Jones’ Anchormen are 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA). RIC has yet to see action in the Pilgrim Wrestling League.

RIC competed at home twice this week, picking up a loss then a win in the first two dual meets of the year. The Anchormen fell to Plymouth State, 33-17, on Wednesday, Dec. 5 and swept Yeshiva University , 59-0, on Sunday, Dec. 9.

Sophomore Walter Borden (East Providence, RI) is 4-7 at 165 and 174 pounds with 22 points, eight takedowns, three reversals, 20 escapes, four near-falls and three wins by fall on the year.

Freshman Patrick DeThomas (Harrisville, RI) is 2-5 at 174 and 184 pounds with six points, six takedowns, one reversal, four escapes and one near-fall on the year.

Sophomore Gerard D’Arezzo (Cranston, RI) is 0-5 at 184 and 285 pounds with one takedown, one reversal and seven escapes on the year.

Freshman Justin Deveau (North Attleboro, MA) is ranked sixth in New England. He is 10-5 at 197 pounds with 41 points, 18 takedowns, three reversals, 20 escapes, five near-falls and three wins by fall on the year.

Sophomore Luke Emmons (West Greenwich, RI) is 6-7 at 141 pounds with 27 points, 12 takedowns, five reversals, ten escapes, four near-falls and three wins by fall on the year.

Freshman Eddy German (Providence, RI) is 2-4 at 125 pounds with six points, five takedowns and nine escapes on the year.

Freshman Jordan Goor (Lowell, MA) is 1-7 at 285 pounds with three takedowns, two reversals, seven escapes and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Matt Kelly (Carver, MA) is 2-4 at 141 and 149 pounds with nine points, one takedown, two reversals, ten escapes and two near-falls on the year.

Freshman Andre LaBonte (Harrisville, RI) is 0-4 at 197 pounds with one reversal and two escapes on the year.

Freshman Gerard LaBonte (Harrisville, RI) is 3-6 at 165 and 174 pounds with 13 points, eight takedowns, eight reversals, 15 escapes, four near-falls and one win by fall on the year.

Senior Chad Lampert (Georgetown, MA) is 6-6 at 141 and 149 pounds with 26 points, 17 takedowns, two reversals, 17 escapes, four near-falls and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Jerard Melito (Medford, NY) is 1-2 at 165 pounds with six points, six takedowns, four escapes, one near-fall and one win by fall on the year.

Senior Mike Penza (Cranston, RI) is 2-4 at 157 and 165 pounds with 12 points, one reversal, 13 escapes, one near-fall and one win by fall on the year.

Junior Mike Riley (Lowell, MA) is currently ranked number one in New England. The co-captain is 13-4 at 133 pounds with 59 points, 46 takedowns, six reversals, 19 escapes, four near-falls and two wins by fall on the year.

Freshman Tim Robblee (Wakefield, MA) is 1-7 at 157 and 174 pounds with five points, six takedowns, two reversals, six escapes and six near-falls on the year.

Freshman Colin Sepko (Southington, CT) is 5-6 at 184 and 197 pounds with 30 points, eight takedowns, five escapes, one near fall and five wins by fall on the year.

Freshman Mike Skaling (Greene, RI) is 0-4 at 157 pounds with two escapes on the year.

Freshman Mike Vieira (Narragansett, RI) is 2-5 at 125 pounds with nine points, four takedowns, two reversals, five escapes and one win by fall on the year.

Freshmen Todd Bloom (Wantagh, NY) and Mike LoSasso (Riverside, RI) have yet to see action this season.

In upcoming action, the Anchormen will compete at the Citrus Invitational in Ft. Lauderdale, FL on Dec. 29 and at the Citrus Duals, also in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, on Dec. 30 and 31.

Women’s Gymnastics

(0-2 Overall; 0-0 in the ECAC)

Head Coach Nicole Follett Pannone’s Anchorwomen have competed in two meets so far this season and are currently 0-2 overall and 0-0 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference.

RIC fell to Brown University 177.850-171.6000 on Monday, Dec. 3 in its season opener and first home meet of the 2001-02 campaign. The Anchorwomen traveled to Bridgeport on Saturday, Dec. 8, where the Anchorwomen were defeated 176.900-171.150.

Senior captain Kristen Oliver (Bristol, RI) is averaging scores of 8.375 on vault, 6.700 on bars, 8.788 on beam, 8.863 on floor and 32.725 in the all-around.

Junior captain Shannon Hughey (Warwick, RI) placed first on the bars against Brown with a score of 9.100 and had the top all-around score on the RIC squad (35.075) against Bridgeport. She is averaging scores of 8.550 on vault, 8.725 on bars, 8.350 on beam, 9.238 on floor and 34.863 in the all-around.

Sophomore Nikki Longo (Raynham, MA) is averaging scores of 8.588 on vault, 8.438 on bars, 9.000 on beam, 8.425 on floor and 34.450 in the all-around.

Sophomore Nicole Simone (Johnston, RI) is averaging 8.250 on beam.

Sophomore Nicki Turner (Salem, NH) is averaging scores of 8.150 on vault, 6.925 on bars and 8.300 on floor.

Freshman Caren Normandin (Fall River, MA) placed first in the all-around competition against Brown with a score of 35.875 and tied for first on beam against Bridgeport on with a score of 9.050. She is averaging scores of 9.050 on vault, 8.325 on bars, 9.188 on beam, 8.825 on floor and 35.388 in the all-around.

Freshman Ashley O’Blenis (Bristol, RI) is averaging scores of 7.925 on vault, 7.700 on bars, 8.500 on beam, 9.000 on floor and 33.150 in the all-around.

Freshman Ashley Bard (North Smithfield, RI) has yet to see action for the Anchorwomen this season

RIC will have more than a month to prepare for its next meet, which will be at the SUNY-Brockport Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002

Men’s Indoor Track & Field

Head Coach Kevin Jackson’s Anchormen have competed in two meets so far this season. RIC opened the 2001-02 campaign at the Brown Invitational, a meet that did not have team scoring, on Saturday, Dec. 1. On Saturday, Dec. 8 the Anchormen traveled to the Harvard Invitational, also a non-scoring meet.

Senior captain Chris Puleo (Barrington, RI) placed 11th in the 500 meters with a time of 1:13.47 at Brown. He placed 18th with a time of 54.44 in the 400 meters at Harvard.

Junior Brian Carney (Barrington, RI) placed tenth in the long jump with 15’11.00" and 14th in the 200 meters with a time of 28.46 at Brown. He placed 26th with a time of 61.93 in the 400 meters at Harvard.

Junior Mike Daniels (Warwick, RI) placed first in the 800 meters with a time of 2:04.17 at Brown . He placed 13th with a time of 2:05.31 in the 800 meters at Harvard.

Sophomore Joseph Padykula (Seekonk, MA) placed eighth in the weight throw with a throw of 5.17 meters and sixth in the shot put with a throw of 10.70 meters at Brown.

Sophomore captain Tim Rudd (Warwick, RI) placed second in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:03.44 at Brown. He placed sixth with a time of 1:58.55 in the 800 meters at Harvard.

Freshman German Cardona (Pawtucket, RI) placed 24th with a time of 7.88 in the 60 meters at Harvard.

Freshman Allen Chase (Warwick, RI) placed fifth in the weight throw with a throw of 11.14 meters and eighth in the shot put with a throw of 9.98 meters at Brown.

Freshman Ruben Feliz (Providence, RI) placed fifth in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:54.19 at Brown. He placed 16th with a time of 206.62 in the 800 meters at Harvard.

Freshman Chris Fernandes (Cumberland, RI) placed ninth with a time of 9.46 in the 55 meters hurdles and fourth with a time of 40.57 in the 300 meters at Brown. He placed 14th with a time of 10.14 in the 100 meters hurdles and 24th with a time of 25.63 in the 200 meters at Harvard.

Freshman Joe Parenteau (Smithfield, RI) placed tenth in the mile with a time of 4:41.98 at Brown.

Freshman Matthew Tarpy (Lincoln, RI) placed second in the high jump with a leap of 5’10.00" and eighth in the 55 meters hurdles with a time of 9.03 at Brown.

The 4 x 800 meter relay team consisting of Daniels, Feliz, Parenteau and Rudd placed third with a time of 8:57.20 at Brown.

The 4 x 400 meters relay team consisting of Tarpy, Fernandes, Carney and Puleo placed fifth with a time of 3:59.49 at Brown. The 4 x 400 meter relay team consisting of Rudd, Cardona, Daniels and Puleo placed third with a time of 3:39.98 at Harvard.

In upcoming action, the Anchormen will compete at the Brandeis Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002

Women’s Indoor Track & Field

Junior Leslie Eastwood (East Providence, RI) placed tenth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:41.00 at Brown. She placed eighth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:48.28 at Harvard.

Junior Jacqueline Horlbogen (Coventry, RI) placed 20th in the 200 meters with a time of 28.27 at Brown. She placed 17th in the 200 meters with a time of 28.26 at Harvard.

Sophomore Courtney Gardiner (Warwick, RI) placed ninth in the 300 meters with a time of 47.65 at Brown.

Sophomore Dapheney Jean-Baptiste (Stamford, CT) placed 21st in the 200 meters with a time of 28.47.

Sophomore captain Joanne Pora (Attleboro, MA) placed 13th in the weight throw with a throw of 10.82 meters and 18th in the shot put with a throw of 7.85 meters at Brown.

Freshman Shari Fenton (West Warwick, RI) placed 15th in the shot put with a throw of 8.36 meters at Brown.

Freshman Rebecca Horton (Seekonk, MA) has yet to see action for the Anchorwomen this season.

Freshman Jessica Leonard (Warwick, RI) placed tenth with a throw of 12.12 meters in the weight throw and 19th with a throw of 7.78 meters in the shot put at Brown.

Freshman Katherine McCalligett (Warwick, RI) placed seventh in the 400 meters with a time of 64.44 at Brown. She placed ninth in the 400 meters with a time of 63:66 at Harvard.

The 4 x 400 meter relay team consisting of McCalligett, Gardiner, Jean-Baptiste and Horlbogen placed 11th with a time of 4:26.38 at Brown.

In upcoming action, the Anchorwomen will compete at the Brandeis Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002.
