Rhode Island College Winter Sports Update #3

Men’s Basketball

(0-9 Overall, 0-2 in the Little East)

Providence, RI—First-year Head Coach Mike Kelly’s Anchormen are 0-9 overall and 0-2 in the Little East Conference.

The Anchormen suffered a loss to Johnson & Wales University last week, falling to the Wildcats 67-60 on the road on Tuesday, Dec. 11.

Freshman forward Kevin Payette (Woonsocket, RI) has played in nine games, starting five of them. He is averaging 9.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 1.3 steals per game.

Junior guard James Heady (Bridgeport, CT) has played in nine games, starting five of them. He is averaging 6.4 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game.

Sophomore center Kurt Gorter (North Kingstown, RI) has played in nine games, starting eight of them. He is averaging 7.1 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. Gorter was the leading rebounder for RIC against Johnson & Wales with 12 boards.

Sophomore forward Mike Costigan (Pawtucket, RI) has played in nine games, starting six of them. He is averaging 5.9 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game.

Freshman forward Jason Harris (Bedford, MA) has played in nine games, starting five of them. He is averaging 7.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 0.9 steals per game.

Senior guard Mike Monahan (Johnston, RI) has played in seven games. He is averaging 2.7 points and 1.4 rebounds per game.

Freshman guard Evan Bryant (Norwalk, CT) has played in nine games. He is averaging 4.2 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.

Freshman forward Ian Robertson (Naugatuck, CT) has played in nine games, starting four of them. He is averaging 4.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.

Junior guard Eric Britto (Riverside, RI) has played in nine games, starting two of them. He is averaging 5.3 points, 1.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.0 steal per game.

Junior guard Pete Mollo (North Providence, RI) has played in nine games, starting all of them. He is averaging 6.6 points, 2.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game.

Freshman forward Raleigh Brennan (Middletown, RI) has played in nine games. He is averaging 2.0 points and 1.9 rebounds per game.

Senior forward Scott Main (Exeter, RI) has missed the club’s last four games with a leg infection. Main played in five games, starting one of them. He is averaging 1.8 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game.

Freshman guard Greg Bushey (Hudson, NH) has played in eight games. He is averaging 3.9 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. Bushey led RIC’s offense against Johnson & Wales with a career-high 17 points.

Sophomore forward Matt Records (East Greenwich, RI) has played in four games. He is averaging 1.0 point per game.

RIC will next play in Florida over the winter recess. The Anchormen will face Warner Southern on Jan. 2 and compete in the Flagler College Invitational on Jan. 4 and 5.

Women’s Basketball

(2-8 Overall, 0-3 in the Little East)

Head Coach Mike Kelley’s team is 2-8 overall and 0-3 in the Little East Conference.

The Anchorwomen suffered two losses last week, falling to Johnson & Wales 60-28 on Dec. 11 on the road and to LEC foe Keene State 73-43 on Dec. 15 at home.

Sophomore forward Elizabeth Shields (Warwick, RI) has played in ten games, starting all of them. She is averaging 9.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.2 blocks and 1.2 steals per game.

Sophomore guard Monyca Vickers (Mattapoisett, MA) is out indefinitely after suffering a severely broken nose against Pine Manor on Dec. 4. Vickers has played in seven games, starting six of them. She was averaging 7.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game prior to the injury.

Sophomore guard Katie Hansen (Narragansett, RI) has played in ten games, starting nine of them. She is averaging 8.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.1 steals per game.

Senior forward Melanie Wolf (Gorham, NH) has played in ten games, starting all of them. The co-captain is averaging 3.9 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.

Sophomore guard Angela Sarette (Putnam, CT) has played in ten games, starting one of them. She is averaging 6.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. Sarette led RIC offensively in the squad’s loss to Keene State, scoring 12 points.

Sophomore guard Tara Mekuto (Providence, RI) has played in ten games, starting three of them. She is averaging 3.5 points and 2.2 rebounds per game.

Freshman guard Becca Bissonnette (Danielson, CT) has played in ten games, starting all of them. She is averaging 5.7 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. Bissonnette led the Anchorwomen in rebounding against Keene State with 11 boards.

Sophomore guard Abby Ferri (Greene, RI) has played in ten games, starting one of them. She is averaging 2.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.9 steals per game. Ferri was RIC’s leading rebounder against Johnson & Wales with 12 boards.

Junior guard Pamela Kelly (West Hartford, CT) has played in ten games. The co-captain is averaging 1.2 points and 1.0 rebounds per game.

Junior guard Alicia Hersperger (Providence, RI) has played in seven games. She is averaging 1.3 rebounds per game.

Freshman forward Elizabeth Valeika (Woonsocket, RI) has played in four games.

RIC will next play in Florida over the winter recess. The Anchorwomen will face Warner Southern on Dec. 31 and compete in the Webber College Tournament on Jan. 4 and 5.
