Rhode Island College Winter Sports Update #7

Men’s Basketball
(1-20 Overall, 0-10 in the Little East)

Providence, RI—Head Coach Mike Kelly’s Anchormen are 1-20 overall and 0-10 in the Little East Conference. RIC lost to Keene State on the road 91-61 on Feb. 2. The Anchormen remain winless in the LEC.

Freshman forward Kevin Payette (Woonsocket, RI) has played in 21 games, starting 16 of them. He is averaging 8.8 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.1 steals per game.

Freshman forward Jason Harris (Bedford, MA) has played in 21 games, starting 16 of them. He is averaging 9.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 0.8 steals per game.

Junior guard Eric Britto (Riverside, RI) has played in 21 games, starting 12 of them. He is averaging 8.6 points, 1.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 0.9 steals per game.

Sophomore center Kurt Gorter (North Kingstown, RI) has played in 12 games, starting nine of them. He is averaging 6.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.

Junior guard James Heady (Bridgeport, CT) has played in 20 games, starting eight of them. He is averaging 6.0 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game.

Sophomore forward Mike Costigan (Pawtucket, RI) has played in 21 games, starting 18 of them. He is averaging 5.0 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.

Freshman guard Greg Bushey (Hudson, NH) has played in 16 games. He is averaging 5.0 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.

Freshman forward Ian Robertson (Naugatuck, CT) has played in 21 games, starting 15 of them. He is averaging 3.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.

Senior guard Mike Monahan (Johnston, RI) has played in 16 games. He is averaging 2.1 points and 0.8 rebounds per game.

Freshman forward Raleigh Brennan (Middletown, RI) has played in 18 games, starting one of them. He is averaging 2.1 points and 1.9 rebounds per game.

Sophomore forward Matt Records (East Greenwich, RI) has played in 16 games. He is averaging 3.6 points and 1.6 rebounds per game.

Sophomore guard Bobby Carroll (Fairfield, CT) scored a career-high 17 points against Keene State on Feb. 2. He has played in six games. He is averaging 6.1 points and 2.4 rebounds per game.

In upcoming action, RIC will host Western Connecticut on Tuesday Feb. 5 and Southern Maine on Saturday Feb. 9.

 

Women’s Basketball

(4-17 Overall, 1-9 in the Little East)

Head Coach Mike Kelley’s team is 4-17 overall and 1-9 in the Little East Conference. RIC went 1-1 this week, defeating Emerson 73-62 on Jan. 30 before losing 75-47 to Keene State on Feb. 2.

Sophomore forward Elizabeth Shields (Warwick, RI) has played in 21 games, starting all of them. She is averaging 9.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 0.9 blocks and 1.4 steals per game.

Sophomore guard Monyca Vickers (Mattapoisett, MA) has played in 15 games, starting seven of them. Vickers is averaging 6.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

Sophomore guard Katie Hansen (Narragansett, RI) has played in 21 games, starting 20 of them. She is averaging 8.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

Senior forward Melanie Wolf (Gorham, NH) has played in 21 games, starting all of them. The co-captain is averaging 3.0 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.

Sophomore guard Angela Sarette (Putnam, CT) has played in 21 games, starting 11 of them. She is averaging 9.8 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game.

Sophomore guard Tara Mekuto (Providence, RI) has played in 20 games, starting three of them. She is averaging 2.7 points and 2.0 rebounds per game.

Freshman guard Becca Bissonnette (Danielson, CT) has played in 21 games, starting all of them. She is averaging 6.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.

Sophomore guard Abby Ferri (Greene, RI) has played in 21 games, starting one of them. She is averaging 3.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.6 steals per game.

Junior guard Pamela Kelly (West Hartford, CT) has played in 20 games. The co-captain is averaging 1.4 points and 1.0 rebounds per game.

Junior guard Alicia Hersperger (Providence, RI) has played in 14 games. She is averaging 0.9 rebounds per game.

Freshman forward Elizabeth Valeika (Woonsocket, RI) has played in ten games.

In upcoming action, RIC will host Western Connecticut on Tuesday Feb. 5 and Southern Maine on Saturday Feb. 9.

Wrestling

(9-10 overall; 7-4 in the NECCWA; 1-1 in the Pilgrim League)

Head Coach Jay Jones’ Anchormen are 9-10 overall, 7-4 in the New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) and are 1-1 in the Pilgrim League. RIC is currently ranked 10th in New England as a team.

RIC went 2-1 this past week. The Anchormen won 27-25 against their first Pilgrim League opponent of the season, MIT, on Jan. 30. RIC traveled to Roger Williams on Feb. 2 for a tri-meet with Southern Maine. The Anchormen went 1-1 on the day, losing 25-13 against Pilgrim League opponent Roger Williams. RIC came back to defeat Southern Maine 33-13 in the team’s second match of the day.

Junior Mike Riley (Lowell, MA) is currently ranked number one in New England at 133 pounds. The co-captain is 31-4 at 133 pounds with 135 points, 100 takedowns, ten reversals, 38 escapes, 14 near-falls and three wins by fall on the year. Riley is currently riding a 21-match winning streak. He has not lost since the championship match of the Scranton Invitational on Dec. 1.

Freshman Justin Deveau (North Attleboro, MA) was named the Pilgrim League’s Co-Rookie of the Week. Deveau is ranked second in New England. He is 26-10 at 197 pounds with 117 points, 31 takedowns, 12 reversals, 28 escapes, eight near-falls and six wins by fall on the year.

Sophomore Luke Emmons (West Greenwich, RI) is 21-12 at 141 pounds with 95 points, 30 takedowns, 17 reversals, 19 escapes, ten near-falls and seven wins by fall on the year.

Freshman Amos Traystman (Montville, CT) is 9-8 at 125 pounds with 42 points, nine takedowns, two reversals and 11 escapes on the year.

Sophomore Walter Borden (East Providence, RI) is 12-16 at 165 and 174 pounds with 64 points, 28 takedowns, ten reversals, 36 escapes, seven near-falls and six wins by fall on the year.

Sophomore Gerard D’Arezzo (Cranston, RI) is 6-17 at 184 and 285 pounds with 31 points, ten takedowns, three reversal, 41 escapes, one near-fall and two wins by fall on the year.

Freshman Eddy German (Providence, RI) is 3-4 at 125 pounds with 12 points, five takedowns and nine escapes on the year.

Freshman Jordan Goor (Lowell, MA) is 9-18 at 285 pounds with 42 points, six takedowns, five reversals, 18 escapes and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Matt Kelly (Carver, MA) is 5-8 at 141 and 149 pounds with 24 points, six takedowns, two reversals, 17 escapes, six near-falls and two wins by fall on the year.

Freshman Andre LaBonte (Harrisville, RI) is 2-5 at 184, 197 and 285 pounds with nine points, three takedowns, two reversals, nine escapes, two near-falls and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Gerard LaBonte (Harrisville, RI) is 7-18 at 165 and 174 pounds with 28 points, 14 takedowns, 17 reversals, 42 escapes, eight near-falls and two wins by fall on the year.

Senior Chad Lampert (Georgetown, MA) is 9-13 at 141 and 149 pounds with 38 points, 27 takedowns, four reversals, 30 escapes, five near-falls and two win by fall on the year.

Freshman Mike LoSasso (Riverside, RI) is 1-3 at 149 pounds with six points, four takedowns, two reversals, one escape, two near-falls and one win by fall on the year.

Junior Mike Penza (Cranston, RI) is 3-7 at 157 and 165 pounds with 18 points, two reversals, 17 escapes, one near-fall and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Tim Robblee (Wakefield, MA) is 6-13 at 157 and 174 pounds with 26 points, 12 takedowns, seven reversals, 14 escapes, nine near-falls and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Mike Skaling (Greene, RI) is 3-14 at 157, 165 and 174 pounds with nine points, ten takedowns and 25 escapes on the year.

Freshman Mike Vieira (Narragansett, RI) is 4-11 at 125 and 133 pounds with 21 points, six takedowns, six reversals, nine escapes and two wins by fall on the year.

In upcoming action, the Anchormen will compete in a tri-meet with Johnson & Wales at host Coast Guard on Tuesday Feb. 5 and another tri-meet with Bridgewater State at host Trinity on Saturday Feb. 9.

 

Women’s Gymnastics

(0-5 Overall; 0-3 in the ECAC)

Head Coach Nicole Follett Pannone’s Anchorwomen are currently 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference.

RIC lost to SUNY-Brockport 176.475-174.375 at home on Sunday Feb. 3 in the team’s only action of the week. The Anchorwomen remain winless in the ECAC.

Senior captain Kristen Oliver (Bristol, RI) broke her left foot at the Wilson Invitational on Jan. 26 and is out indefinitely. Oliver was averaging scores of 8.460 on vault, 6.913 on bars, 8.681 on beam, 8.835 on floor and 32.950 in the all-around.

Sophomore Nicki Turner (Salem, NH) is out indefinitely after tearing her left ACL over Christmas Break. Turner was averaging scores of 8.150 on vault, 6.925 on bars and 8.300 on floor.

Junior captain Shannon Hughey (Warwick, RI) is averaging scores of 8.667 on vault, 8.621 on bars, 8.363 on beam, 8.879 on floor and 34.529 in the all-around.

Sophomore Nikki Longo (Raynham, MA) is averaging scores of 8.613 on vault, 8.458 on bars, 8.963 on beam, 8.371 on floor and 34.404 in the all-around.

Sophomore Nicole Simone (Johnston, RI) is averaging scores of 8.200 on vault, 6.400 on bars, 7.892 on beam, 7.994 on floor and 31.825 in the all-around.

Freshman Caren Normandin (Fall River, MA) is averaging scores of 8.854 on vault, 8.396 on bars, 9.000 on beam, 8.829 on floor and 35.079 in the all-around.

Freshman Ashley O’Blenis (Bristol, RI) is averaging scores of 8.400 on vault, 7.713 on bars, 8.358 on beam, 8.750 on floor and 33.221 in the all-around.

Sophomore Michaela Hogan (Warwick, RI) is averaging scores of 8.300 on vault, 7.788 on bars and 7.375 on beam.

Freshmen Ashley Bard (North Smithfield, RI) and Lauren Brennan (Barrington, RI) have yet to see action for the Anchorwomen this season

RIC will host a tri-meet against Springfield and Southern Connecticut in its next competition on Sunday, Feb. 10.

 

Men’s Indoor Track & Field

Head Coach Kevin Jackson’s Anchormen competed at the Wheaton Invitational on Saturday Feb. 2. The team finished eighth (12 teams) with 24 points on the day.

Senior co-captain Chris Puleo (Barrington, RI) placed second in the 400 meters with a time of 52.48 and second as part of the distance medley with a time of 52.26 at the Wheaton Invitational.

Junior Brian Carney (Barrington, RI) placed 24th in the long jump with a leap of 15’07. 75" and 28th in the 55 meters with a time of 7.33 at the Wheaton Invitational.

Junior Mike Daniels (Warwick, RI) placed seventh in the 800 meters with a time of 2:05.64 and 11th in the 400 meters with a time of 54.78 at the Wheaton Invitational. He placed second as part of the distance medley with a time of 2:07.87 at the same meet.

Junior Joseph Padykula (Seekonk, MA) placed 16th in the shot with a distance of 33’05.75" at the Wheaton Invitational.

Sophomore co-captain Tim Rudd (Warwick, RI) placed second in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:32.22 and second as part of the distance medley with a time of 4:27.89 at the Wheaton Invitational.

Freshman German Cardona (Pawtucket, RI) placed 23rd in the 200 meters with a time of 25.49 at the Wheaton Invitational.

Freshman Chris Fernandes (Cumberland, RI) placed 11th in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 9.38 and 24th in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.64 at the Wheaton Invitational.

Freshman Joe Giardina (West Warwick, RI) placed 18th in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:06.04 at the Wheaton Invitational.

Freshman Joe Parenteau (Smithfield, RI) placed eighth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:06.33 and second as part of the distance medley with a time of 3:27.56 at the Wheaton Invitational

In upcoming action, the LEC/MASCAC Alliance Championships will be held Sunday Feb. 10 at the Regis Lewis Center in Roxbury, MA.

 

Women’s Indoor Track & Field

Head Coach Kevin Jackson’s Anchorwomen competed at the Wheaton Invitational on Saturday Feb. 2. RIC finished seventh (11 teams) on the day with 18 points.

Senior Joyelle Galli (Exeter-West Greenwich) placed fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 32’04.25" and fifth in the long jump with a leap of 15’02.00" at the Wheaton Invitational.

Sophomore Courtney Gardiner (Warwick, RI) placed ninth in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 10.19 and 16th in the 200 meters with a time of 30.39 at the Wheaton Invitational.

Sophomore captain Joanne Pora (Attleboro, MA) placed 11th in the weight throw with a distance of 32’09.50" and 12th in the shot with a distance of 28’01.50" at the Wheaton Invitational.

Freshman Shari Fenton (West Warwick, RI) placed eighth in the shot with a distance of 30’02.00" and ninth in the weight throw with a distance of 34’00.00" at the Wheaton Invitational.

Freshman Jessica Leonard (Warwick, RI) placed second in the weight throw with a distance of 41’04.50"and 17th in the shot with a distance of 27’02.75" at the Wheaton Invitational.

Freshman Rolanda Mangum (Providence, RI) placed eighth in the shot with a distance of 31’06.00" at the Wheaton Invitational.

Freshman Katherine McCalligett (Warwick, RI) placed fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.83 at the Wheaton Invitational.

 In upcoming action, the LEC/MASCAC Alliance Championships will be held Sunday Feb. 10 at the Regis Lewis Center in Roxbury, MA.
