Rhode Island College Wrestling

2001-02 Season Summary

(10-13 overall; 8-7 in the NECCWA; 2-3 in the Pilgrim League)

Head Coach Jay Jones’ Anchormen closed out the 2001-02 season with a 10-13 overall record, an 8-7 regular season finish in the New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) and a 2-3 mark in the Pilgrim Wrestling League. The Anchormen finished 12th out of 15 teams at the 2002 NECCWA Championships.

Senior Chad Lampert (Georgetown, MA) finished his four-year wrestling career with a 25-60 (.294) record, having grappled in five different weight classes. Lampert accumulated 126 points, 70 takedowns, nine reversals, 101 escapes, nine near-falls and seven wins by fall in his career.

As a senior in 2001-02, Lampert posted a 12-17 (.413) record at 141 and 149 pounds with 54 points, 38 takedowns, five reversals, 41 escapes, six near-falls and three wins by fall.

As a junior in 2000-01, Lampert was 4-15 (.211) at 149, 157 and 165 lbs. with 21 points, 15 takedowns, 12 escapes, three near-falls and one win by fall on the year.

As a sophomore in 1999-00, he finished the season with a 5-19 (.208) record, 30 points, eight takedowns, three reversals and 27 escapes in 24 matches. Lampert, who normally competed at 149 pounds, also wrestled at 141, 157, 165 and 184 pounds on the year.

Lampert redshirted the 1998-99 season. As a freshman in 1997-98, he posted a record of 4-9 (.308) in 13 matches at various weight classes. He saw action in nine matches at 142 pounds, three at 158 and one at 150. Three of his wins were by fall.

Lampert is a community health major and a 1997 graduate of Georgetown High School.

Junior Mike Penza (Cranston, RI) was 3-10 (.230) at 157 and 165 pounds with 18 points, one takedown, four reversals, 26 escapes, one near-fall and one win by fall on the year.

Junior Mike Riley (Lowell, MA) earned All-New England honors, placing third at the NECCWA Championships at 133 pounds. Riley had a 28-match winning streak stopped at the championships. The co-captain was 37-6 (.860) with 163 points, 128 takedowns, ten reversals, 48 escapes, 21 near-falls and four wins by fall on the year. Riley established a new school record for wins in a season with 37. He placed first at the Citrus Invitational on Dec. 29, second at the Scranton Invitational on Dec. 1, third at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 10 and fourth at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 17.

Sophomore Walter Borden (East Providence, RI) was 12-18 (.400) at 165 and 174 pounds with 64 points, 30 takedowns, ten reversals, 37 escapes, seven near-falls and six wins by fall on the year.

Sophomore Gerard D’Arezzo (Cranston, RI) was 6-21 (.222) at 184 and 285 pounds with 31 points, 11 takedowns, three reversals, 48 escapes, one near-fall and two wins by fall on the year.

Sophomore Luke Emmons (West Greenwich, RI) was 25-16 (.609) at 141 pounds with 113 points, 40 takedowns, 21 reversals, 33 escapes, 12 near-falls and eight wins by fall on the year. Emmons moved into a tie for tenth place among RIC’s career pin leaders with 13. He took fourth place at the Scranton Invitational on Dec. 1.

Freshman Justin Deveau (North Attleboro, MA) earned All-New England honors, placing second at the NECCWA Championships at 197 pounds. He was 31-15 (.673) at 197 pounds with 135 points, 33 takedowns, 15 reversals, 37 escapes, 12 near-falls and eight wins by fall on the year. He placed third at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 10 and took fourth place at the Scranton Invitational on Dec. 1.

Freshman Eddy German (Providence, RI) was 3-4 (.428) at 125 pounds with 12 points, five takedowns and nine escapes on the year. German dislocated his elbow in practice on Nov. 27 and missed the remainder of the season.

Freshman Jordan Goor (Lowell, MA) was 10-22 (.312) at 285 pounds with 45 points, nine takedowns, five reversals, 22 escapes and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Matt Kelly (Carver, MA) was 5-8 (.384) at 141 and 149 pounds with 24 points, six takedowns, two reversals, 17 escapes, six near-falls and two wins by fall on the year.

Freshman Andre LaBonte (Harrisville, RI) was 2-7 (.222) at 184, 197 and 285 pounds with nine points, three takedowns, two reversals, 12 escapes, two near-falls and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Gerard LaBonte (Harrisville, RI) was 8-22 (.266) at 165 and 174 pounds with 34 points, 15 takedowns, 18 reversals, 47 escapes, eight near-falls and two wins by fall on the year.

Freshman Mike LoSasso (Riverside, RI) was 1-3 (.250) at 149 pounds with six points, four takedowns, two reversals, one escape, two near-falls and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Tim Robblee (Wakefield, MA) was 10-16 (.385) at 157 and 174 pounds with 42 points, 22 takedowns, seven reversals, 20 escapes, 11 near-falls and two wins by fall on the year.

Freshman Mike Skaling (Greene, RI) was 3-17 (.150) at 157, 165 and 174 pounds with nine points, ten takedowns and 25 escapes on the year.

Freshman Amos Traystman (Montville, CT) was 10-13 (.434) at 125 pounds with 48 points, 11 takedowns, three reversals and 13 escapes on the year.

Freshman Mike Vieira (Narragansett, RI) was 4-11 (.266) at 125 and 133 pounds with 21 points, six takedowns, six reversals, nine escapes and two wins by fall on the year.
