Rhode Island College Menís Indoor Track & Field

2001-02 Season Summary

Providence, RI--The Rhode Island College menís indoor track and field team, led by first-year Head Coach Kevin Jackson and his assistants Matt Hird and Liz Legault, closed out the 2001-02 season at the 2002 Division III Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships, hosted by Tufts University on Mar. 2. The Anchormen had four competitors take part in the Championships and did not score as a team.

The Anchormen tied for 21st place with 3.0 points at the 2002 Division III New England Championships, hosted by Bates College, on Feb. 16. The Anchormen had four competitors compete at the championships.

RIC placed sixth (ten teams) with 33.0 points at the 2002 Little East/MASCAC Alliance Championships, held at the Reggie Lewis Center on Feb. 10. The Anchormen placed fourth (five teams) in the Little East Conference on the day.

Senior co-captain Chris Puleo (Barrington, RI) earned All-New England honors as part of the distance medley team, which placed sixth with a time 10:44.84 at the N.E. Div. III Championships. Puleo earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the 400 meters, placing sixth with a time of 52.67 at the LEC/Alliance Championships.

At the Wheaton Invitational on Feb. 2, Puleo set a school record in the 400 meters, placing second with a time of 52.48. Puleo placed second as part of the distance medley team with a time of 10:55.58 at the same meet. He placed first in the 400 meters with a time of 53.82 and third in the 200 meters with a time of 25.19 at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 26. Puleo set a school record in the 500 meters with a time of 1:13.47 at the Brown Invitational on Dec. 1.

As a junior in 2000-01, Puleo placed 15th in the 400 meters with a time of 55.51 at the Little East/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Feb. 3. He placed 17th in the 200 meters with a time of 25.60 at the Alliance Championships. He placed 11th in the 400 meters with a time of 55.29 at the Smith College Invitational on Feb. 10. He placed fifth in the 400 meters with a season-best time of 55.08 at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 27.

As a sophomore in 1999-00, he earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the 400 meters, placing sixth with a season-best time of 54.41 at the Alliance Championships.

As a freshman in 1998-99, Puleo posted a season-best time of 25.13 in the 200 meters at the Alliance/Little East Championships on Feb. 14.

Puleo is a criminal justice/sociology major and a 1998 graduate of Barrington High School.

Junior Brian Carney (Barrington, RI) ran a season-best time of 7.33 in the 55 meter dash on Feb. 2 at the Wheaton Invitational. He jumped a season-best 18í03.25" in the long jump at the LEC/Alliance Championships. He ran a season-best time of 28.46 in the 200 meters and placed tenth in the long jump with a distance of 15í11.00" at the Brown Invitational on Dec. 1.

Junior Mike Daniels (Warwick, RI) earned All-New England honors as part of the distance medley team, which placed sixth with a time of 10:44.84 at the N.E. Div. III Championships.

Daniels earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the 600 meters, placing second with a season-best time of 1:27.51 at the LEC/Alliance Championships.

At the Wheaton Invitational of Feb. 2, Daniels ran a season-best time of 54.78 in the 400 meters, placing 11th overall. Daniels placed first in the 800 meters, recording a season-best time of 2:04.17 at the Brown Invitational on Dec. 1.

Junior Joe Padykula (Seekonk, MA) placed third in the weight throw with a season-high distance of 36í01.50" at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 26. He recorded a season-high mark in the shot with a distance 36í02.75" on Jan. 19 at the Brandeis Invitational.

Sophomore co-captain Tim Rudd (Warwick, RI) placed ninth at the ECAC Championships with a time of 4:02.44 in the 1,500 meters. Rudd earned All-New England honors as part of the distance medley team, which placed sixth with a time of 10:44.84 at the N.E. Div. III Championships.

Rudd was named All-Alliance/Little East in both the 1,000 and 1,500 meters. He placed first in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:34.43 and second in the 1,500 meters, which established a new school record with a time of 4:02.01.

At the Wheaton Invitational on Feb. 2, Rudd placed second in the 1,000 meters setting a new school record with time of 2:32.22. Rudd established a new school record in the 800 meters with a time 1:58.00 at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 8. Rudd placed second at the Brown Invitational on Dec. 1 in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:03.44, setting another school record. At the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 26, Rudd re-wrote the record books again with a school-record time of 4:27.88 in the mile, placing first overall.

Freshman German Cardona (Pawtucket, RI) established a new school record in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.88 at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 8. He placed third in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.24 at the Southern Maine Invitational. He ran a season-best time of 25.11 in the 200 meters at the LEC/Alliance Championships.

Freshmen Ruben Feliz (Providence, RI) was named All-Alliance/Little East in the 1,000 meters, recording a season-best time of 2:44.76, which placed him sixth overall. At the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 8, Feliz ran a season-best time of 2:06.72 in the 800 meters.

Freshmen Chris Fernandes (Cumberland, RI) established a new school record in the 55 meter hurdles, placing second with a time of 9.12 at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 26. Fernandes ran a season-best time of 56.33 in the 400 meters at the LEC/Alliance Championships. He placed fourth in the 300 meters at the Brown Invitational with a season-best time of 40.57 on Dec. 1.

Freshman Charm Howie (Providence, RI) placed 15th in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.30 at the LEC/Alliance Championships.

Freshman Joe Giardina (West Warwick, RI) ran a season-best time of 5:06.04 at the Wheaton Invitational on Feb. 2.

Freshman Joe Parenteau (Smithfield, RI) earned All-New England honors as part of the distance medley team, which placed sixth with a time of 10:44.84 at the N.E. Div. III Championships. He earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the 800 meters, placing sixth overall with a season-best time of 2:06.01. Parenteau ran a season-best time of 4:26.89 in the 1,500 meters at the Brandeis Invitational on Jan. 19. At the Brown Invitational on Dec. 1, Parenteau ran a season-best time of 4:41.98 in the mile, placing tenth overall.
