Rhode Island College Women’s Gymnastics

2001-02 Season Summary
(0-9 Overall, 0-5 in the ECAC)

Providence, RI—Head Coach Nikki Pannone’s women’s gymnastics team finished the 2001-02 season with a 0-9 overall record and a 0-5 mark in the Eastern College Athletic Conference. The team placed seventh at the ECAC Championships with a score of 174.075. Three members of the team qualified for the 2002 National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championships, which were hosted by Ithaca College on Mar. 22-23.

Senior Kristen Oliver (Bristol, RI) ended her collegiate career prematurely with a foot injury she suffered at the Wilson Invitational on Jan. 26. Prior to the injury, Oliver was averaging scores of 8.460 on vault, 6.913 on bars, 8.681 on beam, 8.835 on floor and 32.950 in the all-around. Her season-high marks were as follows: 8.900 on vault, 7.850 on bars and 34.675 in the all-around vs. MIT/Ursinus on Jan. 25; 9.175 on beam and 8.975 on floor vs. Brown on Dec. 3;

As a junior in 2000-01, Oliver averaged scores of 8.630 on vault, 7.907 on bars, 8.852 on beam, 8.914 on floor and 34.302 in the all-around. Her season-high marks were as follows: 8.950 on vault vs. Bridgeport; 8.650 on bars vs. Wilson/SUNY-Brockport; 9.200 on beam vs. Bridgeport; 9.300 on floor vs. Wilson/SUNY-Brockport; 35.425 in the all-around at the Springfield meet.

At the 2001 ECAC Championships, Oliver was tied for 27th on vault with a score of 8.850, placed 34th on bars with a score of 7.700, placed 32nd on beam with a score of 8.700, placed 45th on floor with a score of 8.125 and was 15th in the all-around with a score of 33.375.

As a sophomore in 1999-00, she averaged scores of 8.707 on vault, 8.061 on bars, 8.545 on beam, 8.739 on floor and 34.052 in the all-around for the year. Oliver posted season-high marks of 8.850 on vault, 9.100 on beam and 35.300 in the all-around against Bridgeport; 8.700 on bars at the ECAC Championships and 9.150 on floor against Southern Connecticut.

As a freshman in 1998-99, Oliver averaged scores of 8.514 on vault, 8.288 on bars, 8.000 on beam, 8.696 on floor and 33.938 in all-around competition. Her season-high marks were: 8.775 on vault and 9.025 on floor at Springfield, 8.375 on bars at Southern Connecticut; 8.500 on beam and 34.150 in the all-around at the ECAC Championships.

Oliver placed 16th at the 1999 ECAC Championships with an all-around score of 34.150. She was 31st on vault at 8.725, tied for 25th on bars at 8.200, 31st on beam at 8.500 and 32nd on floor with a score of 8.725.

She is a physical education major and a 1997 graduate of Mt. Hope High School.

Junior Shannon Hughey (Warwick, RI) competed at the 2002 NCGA Championships as a bars and floor specialist. She placed 14th on bars with a score of 8.900 and 43rd on floor with a score of 9.050.

At the 2002 ECACs, she placed 20th on vault with a score of 9.175, seventh on bars with a score of 9.075, 34th on beam with a score of 8.600, ninth on floor with a score of 9.475 and eighth in the all-around with a combined score of 36.325.

Hughey averaged scores of 8.843 on vault, a team-high 8.789 on bars, 8.348 on beam, a team-high 9.055 on floor and 35.023 in the all-around on the season. Her season-high marks were as follows: 9.175 on vault and 9.475 on floor at the ECAC Championships on Mar. 9; 9.250 on bars vs. MIT/Bridgeport on Feb. 24; 9.200 on beam and 36.725 in the all-around vs. Springfield/Southern Connecticut on Feb. 10.

Sophomore Michaela Hogan (Warwick, RI) injured her knee while competing on beam at the ECAC Championships and was lost for the remainder of the season. Hogan was averaging scores of 8.243 on vault, 8.014 on bars, 7.517 on beam, 8.383 on floor and 32.650 in the all-around on the season. Her season-high marks were as follows: 8.650 on vault at the Brockport Invitational on Jan. 19; 8.750 on bars and 8.700 on floor vs. MIT/Bridgeport on Feb. 24; 8.150 on beam at the Ithaca Invitational on Feb. 17; 33.400 in the all-around vs. Springfield/Southern Connecticut on Feb. 10.

Sophomore Nikki Longo (Raynham, MA) competed as a beam specialist at the 2002 NCGA Championships where she placed 32nd with a score of 9.125.

At the 2002 ECACs, she placed 34th on vault with a score of 8.975, 23rd on bars with a score of 8.575, 15th on beam with a score of 9.200, 39th on floor with a score of 8.775 and 10th in the all-around with a score 35.525.

Longo averaged scores of 8.698 on vault, 8.570 on bars, a team-high 9.068 on beam, 8.478 on floor and 34.808 in the all-around on the season. Her season-high marks were as follows: 8.975 on vault vs. Bridgeport on Dec. 8 and at the ECAC Championships on Mar. 9; 9.200 on bars, 9.450 on beam, 8.900 on floor and 36.500 in the all-around vs. MIT/Bridgeport on Feb. 24.

Sophomore Nicole Simone (Johnston, RI) averaged scores of 8.155 on vault, 6.433 on bars, 8.033 on beam, 8.456 on floor and 31.710 in the all-around on the season. Her season-high marks were as follows: 8.300 on vault, 7.150 on bars, 8.600 on beam and 33.100 in the all-around vs. MIT/Bridgeport on Feb. 24; 9.250 on floor vs. Springfield/Southern Connecticut on Feb. 10.

Sophomore Nicki Turner (Salem, NH) missed the majority of the season after tearing her ACL over Christmas Break. She was averaging scores of 8.150 on vault, 6.925 on bars and 8.300 on floor. Her season-high marks were as follows: 8.350 on vault vs. Bridgeport on Dec. 8; 7.200 on bars and 8.450 on floor vs. Brown on Dec. 3.

Freshman Caren Normandin (Fall River, MA) was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. She led the team on vault and in the all-around on the season. She competed as a vault specialist at the NCGA Championships where she placed 34th with a score of 8.975.

At the 2002 ECACs, she placed ninth on vault with a score of 9.325, 12th on bars with a score of 8.925, 20th on beam with a score of 8.975, 14th on floor with a score of 9.400 and seventh in the all-around with a score of 36.625.

She averaged scores of 9.002 on vault, 8.435 on bars, 9.025 on beam, 8.975 on floor and 35.440 in the all-around on the season. Her season-high marks were as follows: 9.325 on vault and 36.625 in the all-around at the ECAC Championships on Mar. 9; 9.400 on floor vs. MIT/Bridgeport on Feb. 24 and at the ECAC Championships on Mar. 9; 9.100 on bars vs. SUNY-Brockport on Feb. 2; 9.400 on beam at the Wilson Invitational on Jan. 26.

Freshman Ashley O’Blenis (Warren, RI) averaged scores of 8.488 on vault, 7.888 on bars, 8.380 on beam, 8.958 on floor and 33.713 in the all-around on the season. Her season-high marks were as follows: 8.850 on vault and 8.250 on bars vs. MIT/Bridgeport on Feb. 24; 8.900 on beam and 34.700 in the all-around vs. SUNY-Brockport on Feb. 2; 9.375 on floor vs. Springfield/Southern Connecticut on Feb. 10.

Freshman Lauren Brennan (Barrington, RI) did not see action for the Anchorwomen this season.
