Rhode Island College Spring Sports Update #2

Baseball

2-12 Overall Record; 0-2 in the Little East Conference

Head Coach Jay Grenier’s Anchormen are 2-12 overall and 0-2 in the Little East Conference. RIC went 0-3 on the week falling to Worcester State 9-6 on Mar. 28. The Anchormen saw their first Little East action of the season on Saturday Mar. 30 against Southern Maine, dropping both games to the Huskies (0-20, 2-7).

Senior right fielder Russ Barron (Cranston, RI) has played in 14 games, starting all of them. He is batting .320 with seven runs, 16 hits, six doubles, seven RBI and one stolen base.

Senior catcher/designated hitter Sean McNamara (Warwick, RI) has played in 11 games, starting all of them. He is batting .250 with six runs, 11 hits, four doubles and three RBI.

Senior catcher/designated hitter Dave Quaglia (Attleboro, MA) has played in 14 games, starting all of them. He is batting .275 with 13 runs, 14 hits, nine doubles and nine RBI.

Junior pitcher Dan Furtado (East Providence, RI) has appeared in seven games. He is 0-2 with a 10.97 ERA and six strikeouts in 10.2 innings pitched.

Junior first basemen Eric Gibree (Bristol, RI) has played in 12 games, starting all of them. He is batting .333 with ten runs, 15 hits, one double, two triples and six RBI.

Junior outfielder Marco Neves (Pawtucket, RI) has played in five games, starting two of them. He has two hits and two runs scored.

Junior third basemen Brian Peer (Windsor, CT) has played in six games, starting four of them. He is batting .143 with three runs, two hits and one RBI.

Sophomore pitcher Jeremy Edwards (Exeter, RI) has appeared in one game. He is 0-1 with a 0.00 ERA and three strikeouts in 2.0 innings pitched.

Sophomore outfielder Ryan Lynch (Newport, RI) has played in ten games, starting six of them. He is batting .250 with three runs, four hits, one double and three RBI.

Sophomore second basemen Mike Melucci (Lincoln, RI) has played in ten games, starting eight of them. He is batting .129 with one run, four hits, one double, two RBI and one stolen base.

Sophomore shortstop George Serra (Westerly, RI) has played in nine games, starting all of them. He is batting .313 with one run, ten hits, one double, five RBI and one stolen base.

Sophomore pitcher Jeff Steere (Chepachet, RI) has appeared in four games, starting three of them. He is 0-2 with a 10.47 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 16.1 innings pitched.

Freshman center fielder Kyle Benchsky (Cranston, RI) has played in 14 games, starting 12 of them. He is batting .152 with six runs, five hits, three doubles and two RBI.

Freshman pitcher Matthew Brannon (Cranston, RI) has appeared in five games, starting three of them. He is 1-2 with a 4.32 ERA, two complete games and ten strikeouts in 25.0 innings pitched.

Freshman outfielder Joe Cerullo (Johnston, RI) has played in eight games, starting six of them. He is batting .087 with one run, two hits and three RBI.

Freshman pitcher Seth DeCorte (Chepachet, RI) has appeared in five games. He is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA and nine strikeouts in 12.0 innings pitched.

Freshman pitcher/outfielder Glenn Dusablon (North Smithfield, RI) has appeared in four games, starting three of them. He is 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 18.2 innings pitched.

Freshman second basemen/shortstop Mike Luke (Cranston, RI) has played in ten games, starting nine of them. He is batting .121 with four runs, four hits, one double and five RBI.

Freshman pitcher Jim Milano (Johnston, RI) has appeared in three games, starting all of them. He is 0-3 with a 7.64 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 17.2 innings pitched.

Freshman infielder Anthony Pacitto (Johnston, RI) has played in three games.

Freshman outfielder Kevin Payette (Woonsocket, RI) has played in six games, starting four of them. He is batting .308 with two runs and four hits.

Freshman third basemen Chris Smaldone (Johnston, RI) has played in 13 games, starting all of them. He is batting .256 with seven runs, 11 hits, one double, one triple and four RBI.

In upcoming action, RIC will host Suffolk on Tuesday Apr. 2 and Salem State on Thursday Apr. 4., before traveling to Keene State on Saturday, Apr. 6 for a doubleheader.

 

Softball

8-3 Overall; 1-1 in the Little East Conference

Head Coach Maria Morin’s Anchorwomen are 8-3 overall and 1-1 in the Little East Conference.

RIC won its first two games of the week sweeping Salve Regina on Monday, Mar. 25, taking both games of the doubleheader 5-0 and 3-1.

The Anchorwomen saw their first Little East action of the season on Saturday, Mar. 30 against Keene State. RIC shut out Keene State in the first game of the doubleheader 8-0, but the Owls came back to take the second game, shutting the Anchorwomen out 5-0.

Freshman catcher Rachael Caldwell (Shannock, RI) was named the Little East Conference's Rookie of the Week. She has played in 11 games, starting ten of them. She is batting .400 with five runs, 14 hits, two doubles and eight RBI.

Senior outfielder Keri Leighton (Providence, RI) has played in 11 games, starting nine of them. She is batting .333 with one run and one hit.

Senior second basemen Caitlin Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) has played in 11 games, starting ten of them. She is batting .241 with seven runs, seven hits, one double, and three RBI.

Junior first baseman Michele Fanelli (Pembroke Pines, FL) has played in 11 games, starting all of them. She is batting .429 with ten runs, 18 hits, four doubles, one triple and 13 RBI.

Junior shortstop Melanie Miller (Warwick, RI) has played in 11 games, starting all of them. She is batting .282 with seven runs, 11 hits, two doubles, three RBI and one stolen base.

Sophomore catcher Katie Ferreira (Rehoboth, MA) has played in six games, starting all of them. She is batting .313 with three runs, five hits and one RBI.

Sophomore centerfielder Sue Gaber (Colchester, CT) has played in 11 games, starting all of them. She is batting .241 with three runs, seven hits and five RBI.

Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Kim Warrington (North Kingstown, RI) has appeared in six games, starting five of them. She is 3-1 with a 1.91 ERA, four complete games and 31 strikeouts in 37.2 innings. She has played in nine games, starting six of them. She is batting .200 with three runs, five hits, one triple, three RBI and two stolen bases.

Freshman catcher Kristen Bartolucci (Ledyard, CT) has played in eight games, starting six of them. She is batting .286 with six runs, six hits, and five RBI.

Freshman infielder Amy Machado (Newport, RI) has played in six games, starting four of them. She is batting .467 with five runs, seven hits, one double, one triple and three RBI.

Freshman outfielder Jennifer Puniello (Bristol, RI) has played in seven games, starting four of them. She is batting .444 with four runs, four hits and four RBI.

Freshman infielder Aimee Reed (Pawcatuck, CT) has played in seven games, starting five of them. She is batting .533 with five runs, eight hits and six RBI.

Freshman pitcher/left fielder Casey Soares (Swansea, MA) has appeared in seven games, starting six of them. She is 5-2 with a 2.19 ERA, five complete games, two shutouts and 29 strikeouts in 37.0 innings pitched. She has played in 11 games, starting all of them. She is batting .355 with ten runs, 11 hits, one double, one triple, five RBI and one stolen base.

In upcoming action, RIC will play at Babson College on Tuesday Apr. 2 and host Worcester State the following day on Apr. 3. On Saturday, Apr. 6, the Anchorwomen will travel to Southern Maine for a doubleheader against the Huskies.

Women’s Lacrosse

0-1 Overall; 0-0 in the Little East Conference

Head Coach Matt Coleman’s Anchorwomen are 0-1 overall and have yet to see action in the Little East Conference.

Junior attack wing Rachel Pecoraro (Smithfield, RI) has started in one game. She has two goals for two points and one ground ball.

Junior attack wing Shannon Hughey (Warwick, RI) has yet to see action for the Anchorwomen.

Sophomore attack wing Kim Wells (Granby, CT) has yet to see action for the Anchorwomen.

Freshman center/attack wing Amanda Hutchins (Gilmanton, NH) has started in one game. She has one draw control.

Junior attack Stephanie Callaghan (Warwick, RI) has started in one game.

Sophomore attack Sharon Donahue (North Providence, RI) has played in one game.

Freshman attack Danielle Beaudry (West Greenwich, RI) has started in one game. She has two ground balls.

Freshman attack Veronica Munroe (Wakefield, RI) has started in one game.

Freshman attack Elizabeth Valeika (Woonsocket, RI) has started in one game.

Junior defense wing Lauren Dettore (Cranston, RI) has played in one game. She has one draw control.

Freshman goalkeeper Jessica Mangione (Barrington, RI) has yet to see action for the Anchorwomen.

Men’s Golf

0-1

Head Coach John Fitta’s Anchormen are 0-1. The team kicked off the spring season against Nichols on Friday Mar. 29 at Triggs Memorial Golf Course. RIC lost the match 338-356.

Junior John Ginolfi (Warwick, RI) shot a score of 91 on the day. He shot a score of 51 on the front nine and 40 on the back nine.

Junior Joe Padykula (Seekonk, MA) shot a score of 99 on the day. He shot a score of 49 on the front nine and 50 on the back nine.

Sophomore Ken Ferrara (North Providence, RI) shot a score of 79, making him the medallist on the day. He shot a score of 40 on the front nine and 39 on the back nine. It is the second career match that Ferrara has posted the top score among all golfers.

Sophomore Brian Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) shot a score of 87 on the day. He shot a score of 43 on the front nine and 44 on the back nine.

In upcoming action, RIC will play against Johnson & Wales and Worcester State at Beaver River Golf Course on Friday, Apr. 5.

Men’s Tennis

0-2 Overall; 0-0 in the Little East

Head Coach John Martellino’s Anchormen are 0-2 overall and have yet to see action in the Little East Conference.

Junior Jeff Teixeira (Attleboro, MA) is 0-2 (.000) at number three singles and 0-2 (.000) at number two doubles.

Sophomore Marc Pasonelli (Cranston, RI) is 0-2 (.000) at number two singles and 0-2 (.000) at number one doubles.

Sophomore Julio Andrade (Cranston, RI) is 0-2 (.000) at number one singles and 0-2 (.000) at number one doubles.

Freshman Andre LaBonte (Harrisville, RI) is 0-2 (.000) at number four singles and 0-2 (.000) at number two doubles.

Freshman Adam Pierpaoli (Smithfield, RI) is 1-1 (.500) at number five singles and 0-2 (.000) at number three doubles.

Freshman Tim Smith (Jamestown, RI) is 0-2 (.000) at number six singles and 0-2 (.000) at number three doubles.

In coming action, RIC will host Bridgewater State on Tuesday, Apr. 2, play at Roger Williams on Thursday, Apr. 4 and host UMASS-Boston on Saturday, Apr. 6.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Head Coach Kevin Jackson’s Anchormen competed at the Northeastern Invitational on Saturday, Mar. 30. The meet did not have team scoring.

Junior Brian Carney (Barrington, RI) placed 17th in the long jump with a distance of 16’09.75" and 53rd in the 400 meters with a time of 1:02.67.

Junior James Giammarco (Southington, CT) placed 34th in the javelin with a distance of 106’07.00".

Junior Tim Rudd (Warwick, RI) placed 15th in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:01.52.

Junior Rob Wahnon (Framingham, MA) placed 54th in the 400 meters with a time of 1:02.72.

Sophomore Joe Giardina (West Warwick, RI) placed 39th in the 5,000 meters with a time of 20:18.14.

Freshman Daniel Byun (Hillsdale, NJ) placed 48th in the 400 meters with a time of 58.42.

Freshman Chris Fernandes (Cumberland, RI) placed 18th in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.13.

Freshman Charles Hewes (East Hampton, CT) placed 14th in the shot with a distance of 40’09.00".

Freshman Matt Kelly (Carver, MA) placed 25th in the javelin with a distance of 134’01.00".

Freshman Joe Parenteau (Smithfield, RI) placed 32nd in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:17.82.

In upcoming action, RIC will host its annual invitational on Saturday, Apr. 6 beginning at 11 a.m.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Junior Leslie Eastwood (East Providence, RI) placed 35th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:46.12.

Junior Joanne Pora (Attleboro, MA) placed tenth in the javelin with a distance of 93’04.00" and 13th in the hammer with a distance of 108’03.00".

Freshman Shari Fenton (West Warwick, RI) placed 14th in the hammer with a distance of 103’02.00".

Freshman Courtney Gardiner (Warwick, RI) placed 23rd in the 200 meters with a time of 29.71.

Freshman Jessica Leonard (Warwick, RI) placed fifth in the hammer with a distance of 128’02.00" and 23rd n the shot with a distance of 27’08.25".

Freshman Kara Maggio (Warwick, RI) placed 21st in the javelin with a distance of 82’06.00".

Freshman Rolanda Mangum (Providence, RI) placed third in the hammer with a distance of 135’10.00" and 20th in the shot with a distance of 28’08.25.

Freshman Katherine McCalligett (Warwick, RI) placed tenth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.64.

In upcoming action, RIC will host its annual invitational on Saturday, Apr. 6 beginning at 11 a.m.
