Rhode Island College Spring Sports Update #3

Baseball

4-14 Overall Record; 0-4 in the Little East Conference

Head Coach Jay Grenier’s Anchormen are 4-14 overall and 0-4 in the Little East Conference. RIC went 2-2 on the week, defeating Suffolk University 7-5 on Apr. 2 and Salem State College 7-3 on Apr. 4. In Little East action, the Anchormen were swept by Keene State College on Apr. 6, falling 5-3 in both games

Senior right fielder Russ Barron (Cranston, RI) has played in 18 games, starting all of them. He is batting .299 with ten runs, 20 hits, seven doubles, eight RBI and two stolen bases.

Senior catcher/designated hitter Sean McNamara (Warwick, RI) has played in 15 games, starting 14 of them. He is batting .228 with eight runs, 13 hits, four doubles, four RBI and one stolen base.

Senior catcher/designated hitter Dave Quaglia (Attleboro, MA) has played in 18 games, starting all of them. He is batting .274 with 17 runs, 17 hits, ten doubles, one home run and 13 RBI.

Junior pitcher Dan Furtado (East Providence, RI) has appeared in nine games. He is 0-2 with a 9.24 ERA and nine strikeouts in 12.2 innings pitched.

Junior first basemen Eric Gibree (Bristol, RI) was injured vs. Keene State, breaking his nose in a collision with a fence. He is currently day-to-day. Gibree has played in 16 games, starting all of them. He is batting .311 with 12 runs, 19 hits, one double, three triples, one home run and ten RBI.

Junior outfielder Marco Neves (Pawtucket, RI) has played in seven games, starting three of them. He is batting .250 with two hits and two runs scored.

Junior third basemen Brian Peer (Windsor, CT) has played in eight games, starting six of them. He is batting .182 with five runs, four hits and one RBI.

Sophomore pitcher Jeremy Edwards (Exeter, RI) has appeared in two games. He is 0-1 with one save, a 0.00 ERA and five strikeouts in 3.0 innings pitched.

Sophomore outfielder Ryan Lynch (Newport, RI) has missed the last few games with tendonitis in his shoulder and is out indefinitely. Lynch has played in ten games, starting six of them. He is batting .250 with three runs, four hits, one double and three RBI.

Sophomore second basemen Mike Melucci (Lincoln, RI) has played in 12 games, starting ten of them. He is batting .205 with two runs, eight hits, one double, four RBI and one stolen base.

Sophomore shortstop George Serra (Westerly, RI) has missed the last six games with a broken thumb, but should return to the lineup within a week. Serra has played in nine games, starting all of them. He is batting .313 with one run, ten hits, one double, five RBI and one stolen base.

Sophomore pitcher Jeff Steere (Chepachet, RI) has appeared in five games, starting three of them. He is 0-2 with a 8.84 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 19.1 innings pitched.

Freshman center fielder Kyle Benchsky (Cranston, RI) has played in 18 games, starting 16 of them. He is batting .174 with seven runs, eight hits, three doubles and three RBI.

Freshman pitcher/designated hitter Matthew Brannon (Cranston, RI) has appeared in seven games, starting four of them. He is 1-3 with a 3.44 ERA, two complete games and 30 strikeouts in 34.0 innings pitched. As a hitter, he has played in seven games, starting five of them. He is batting .211 with four hits and two RBI.

Freshman outfielder Joe Cerullo (Johnston, RI) has played in nine games, starting seven of them. He is batting .080 with one run, two hits and three RBI.

Freshman pitcher Seth DeCorte (Chepachet, RI) has appeared in six games, starting one of them. He is 1-1 with a 4.24 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 17.0 innings pitched.

Freshman pitcher/outfielder Glenn Dusablon (North Smithfield, RI) has appeared in six games, starting four of them. He is 2-1 with a 4.72 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 26.2 innings pitched. As a hitter, he has played in six games, starting four of them. He is batting .400 with one run and two hits.

Freshman second basemen/shortstop Mike Luke (Cranston, RI) has played in 14 games, starting 13 of them. He is batting .178 with six runs, eight hits, one double, six RBI and two stolen bases. Luke has already been hit by a pitch nine times this season, setting a RIC single season record. He trails all-time leader Andy Barron ’01 by five for the RIC career record.

Freshman pitcher Jim Milano (Johnston, RI) has appeared in three games, starting all of them. He is 0-3 with a 7.64 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 17.2 innings pitched.

Freshman infielder Anthony Pacitto (Johnston, RI) has played in three games.

Freshman outfielder Kevin Payette (Woonsocket, RI) has played in six games, starting four of them. He is batting .308 with two runs and four hits.

Freshman third basemen Chris Smaldone (Johnston, RI) has played in 17 games, starting all of them. He is batting .293 with ten runs, 17 hits, three doubles, one triple, four RBI and one stolen base.

In upcoming action, RIC will travel to Bridgewater State on Apr. 8, host Framingham State on Apr. 10, UMASS-Dartmouth on Apr. 11 and Clark on Apr. 12. The Anchormen close out the week at Eastern Connecticut State on Apr. 13.

 

Softball

12-3 Overall; 3-1 in the Little East Conference

Head Coach Maria Morin’s Anchorwomen are 12-3 overall and 3-1 in the Little East Conference.

RIC won all four of its contests this past week. The Anchorwomen shutout Babson College 2-0 on Apr. 2. RIC defeated Worcester State 8-1 at home on Apr. 3. In Little East action, the Anchorwomen swept Southern Maine on Apr. 6 (4-2, 6-2).

Senior outfielder Keri Leighton (Providence, RI) has played in 11 games, starting nine of them. She is batting .333 with one run and one hit.

Senior second basemen Caitlin Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) has played in 15 games, starting 14 of them. She is batting .216 with seven runs, eight hits, one double, three RBI and one stolen base.

Junior first baseman Michele Fanelli (Pembroke Pines, FL) has played in 15 games, starting all of them. She is batting .474 with 13 runs, 27 hits, five doubles, two triples and 20 RBI.

Junior shortstop Melanie Miller (Warwick, RI) has played in 15 games, starting all of them. She is batting .259 with 12 runs, 14 hits, two doubles, four RBI and one stolen base.

Sophomore catcher Katie Ferreira (Rehoboth, MA) has played in ten games, starting all of them. She is batting .250 with four runs, six hits and one RBI.

Sophomore centerfielder Sue Gaber (Colchester, CT) has played in 15 games, starting all of them. She is batting .308 with six runs, 12 hits and seven RBI.

Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Kim Warrington (North Kingstown, RI) has appeared in nine games, starting eight of them. She is 6-1 with a 1.38 ERA, seven complete games, three shutouts, and 41 strikeouts in 58.2 innings. At the plate, she has played in 12 games, starting nine of them. She is batting .188 with four runs, six hits, two triples, five RBI and two stolen bases.

Freshman catcher Kristen Bartolucci (Ledyard, CT) has played in eight games, starting six of them. She is batting .286 with six runs, six hits, and five RBI.

Freshman catcher Rachael Caldwell (Shannock, RI) has played in 15 games, starting 14 of them. She is batting .413 with six runs, 19 hits, four doubles, one triple and 11 RBI.

Freshman infielder Amy Machado (Newport, RI) has played in 14 games, starting 12 of them. She is batting .351 with seven runs, 13 hits, one double, two triples, ten RBI and one stolen base.

Freshman outfielder Jennifer Puniello (Bristol, RI) has played in nine games, starting five of them. She is batting .385 with five runs, five hits and four RBI.

Freshman infielder Aimee Reed (Pawcatuck, CT) has played in ten games, starting seven of them. She is batting .409 with six runs, nine hits and six RBI.

Freshman pitcher/left fielder Casey Soares (Swansea, MA) has appeared in eight games, starting seven of them. She is 6-2 with a 2.25 ERA, six complete games, two shutouts and 31 strikeouts in 44.0 innings pitched. At the plate, she has played in 15 games, starting all of them. She is batting .310 with 14 runs, 13 hits, one double, one triple, six RBI and one stolen base.

In upcoming action, RIC will travel to Endicott College on Apr. 9. RIC will host Gordon College on Apr. 11, UMASS-Boston on Apr. 13 and Lasell College on Apr. 14.

Women’s Lacrosse

0-2 Overall; 0-0 in the Little East Conference

Head Coach Matt Coleman’s Anchorwomen are 0-2 overall and have yet to see action in the Little East Conference.

RIC lost to Salve Regina 19-2 on Apr. 2 in the team’s only game of the week.

Junior attack wing Rachel Pecoraro (Smithfield, RI) has played in two games, starting all of them. She has two goals for two points and one ground ball.

Junior attack wing Shannon Hughey (Warwick, RI) has started in one game. She has two goals for two points.

Sophomore attack wing Kim Wells (Granby, CT) has started in one game.

Freshman center/attack wing Amanda Hutchins (Gilmanton, NH) has played in two games, starting all of them. She has two draw controls and one ground ball.

Junior attack Stephanie Callaghan (Warwick, RI) has started in one game.

Sophomore attack Sharon Donahue (North Providence, RI) has played in two games.

Freshman attack Danielle Beaudry (West Greenwich, RI) has played in two games, starting all of them. She has four ground balls.

Freshman attack Veronica Munroe (Wakefield, RI) has played in two games, starting one of them.

Freshman attack Elizabeth Valeika (Woonsocket, RI) has played in two games, starting all of them.

Junior defense wing Lauren Dettore (Cranston, RI) has played in two games. She has one draw control.

Sophomore defense wing Katie Anderson (Rehoboth, MA) has played in two games, starting all of them.

Freshman defense wing Corinne-Marie Gervais (Woonsocket, RI) has played in two games.

Sophomore defense Cara Collins (Johnston, RI) has played in two games, starting all of them. She has two ground balls.

Sophomore defense Kristin Mandsager (Portsmouth, RI) has played in two games, starting all of them.

Sophomore defense Amy Pinette (Middletown, RI) has played in two games, starting all of them. She has two ground balls.

Freshman defense Erika Babat (North Kingstown, RI) has played in two games, starting all of them. She has one draw control and three ground balls.

Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Gerde (West Islip, NY) has played in two games, starting all of them. She has 23 saves and five ground balls.

Freshman goalkeeper Jessica Mangione (Barrington, RI) has yet to see action for the Anchorwomen.

In upcoming action, RIC will travel to UMASS-Dartmouth on Apr. 9 and to Elms College on Apr. 11. The Anchorwomen will host Keene State on Apr. 13.

Men’s Tennis

1-4 Overall; 0-1 in the Little East

Head Coach John Martellino’s Anchormen are 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the Little East Conference.

RIC lost 4-2 to Bridgewater State on Apr. 2, before defeating Roger Williams 6-3 on Apr. 4. In the team’s first Little East action of the season, the Anchormen lost to UMASS-Boston 6-3 on Apr. 6.

Junior Jeff Teixeira (Attleboro, MA) is 1-3 (.250) in singles matches and 1-4 (.200) in doubles matches for 1.5 points.

Sophomore Marc Pasonelli (Cranston, RI) is 1-4 (.200) in singles matches and 1-4 (.200) in doubles matches for 1.5 points.

Sophomore Julio Andrade (Cranston, RI) is 0-5 (.000) in singles matches and 1-4 (.200) in doubles matches for 0.5 points.

Freshman Andre LaBonte (Harrisville, RI) is 2-3 (.400) in singles matches and 2-3 (.400) in doubles matches for 3.0 points.

Freshman Adam Pierpaoli (Smithfield, RI) is 3-2 (.600) in singles matches and 1-4 (.200) in doubles matches for 3.5 points.

Freshman Tim Smith (Jamestown, RI) is 1-4 (.200) in singles matches and 2-3 (.400) in doubles matches for 2.0 points.

In coming action, RIC will travel to Salve Regina on Apr. 8 and Southern Maine on Apr. 13.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Head Coach Kevin Jackson’s Anchormen hosted the Rhode Island College Invitational on Saturday, Apr. 6. The team finished fourth out of ten teams with 74 points on the day.

Junior Brian Carney (Barrington, RI) placed 13th in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.03.

Junior Mike Daniels (Warwick, RI) placed third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:02.31.

Junior James Giammarco (Southington, CT) placed 12th in the javelin with a distance of 103’09.00".

Junior Charm Howie (Providence, RI) placed fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 23.67 and eighth in the 100 meters with a time of 11.96.

Sophomore Charles Kuti (Providence, RI) placed seventh in the 100 meters with a time of 11.87 and eighth in the 200 meters with a time of 24.40.

Junior Tim Rudd (Warwick, RI) placed first in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:06.35 and second in the 800 meters with a time of 1:58.79.

Junior Rob Wahnon (Framingham, MA) placed 14th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:17.52.

Sophomore Joe Giardina (West Warwick, RI) placed 18th in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:07.86.

Sophomore Jeremy Meyer (Miami, FL) placed 14th in the 400 meters with a time of 1:03.31.

Freshman Matt Faria (Seekonk, MA) placed tenth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:12.44.

Freshman Ruben Feliz (Providence, RI) placed eighth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:10.09.

Freshman Chris Fernandes (Cumberland, RI) placed first in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.35.

Freshman Charles Hewes (East Hampton, CT) placed third in the shot with a distance of 40’04.00".

Freshman Matt Kelly (Carver, MA) placed seventh in the javelin with a distance of 132’02.00" and placed 16th in the 200 meters with a time of 26.09.

Freshman Joe Parenteau (Smithfield, RI) placed fifth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:19.27.

In upcoming action, RIC will compete at the Brown University Invitational on Saturday Apr. 13.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Head Coach Kevin Jackson’s Anchorwomen hosted the Rhode Island College Invitational on Saturday, Apr. 6. The team finished fourth out of nine teams with 92 points on the day.

Senior Crisolita da Cruz (Providence, RI) placed third in the hammer with a distance of 123’04.00".

Senior Joyelle Galli (Exeter, RI) placed second in the triple jump with a distance of 32’02.75"and fourth in the long jump with a distance of 14’03.25".

Junior Michele Dunphy (Cranston, RI) placed eighth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:42.06.

Junior Leslie Eastwood (East Providence, RI) placed second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:40.70.

Junior Marvel Mejia (Providence, RI) placed 16th in the 200 meters with a time of 37.11.

Junior Joanne Pora (Attleboro, MA) placed third in the javelin with a distance of 101’09.00", fifth in the hammer with a distance of 106’08.00" and sixth in the shot with a distance of 26’06.50".

Freshman Courtney Gardiner (Warwick, RI) placed sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 30’08.25" and 11th in the 200 meters with a time of 29.89.

Freshman Jessica Leonard (Warwick, RI) placed second in the hammer with a distance of 125’00.00", fifth in the shot with a distance of 26’11.00" and eighth in the discus with a distance of 75’01.00".

Freshman Kara Maggio (Warwick, RI) placed ninth in the javelin with a distance of 84’08.00".

Freshman Rolanda Mangum (Providence, RI) placed first in the hammer with a distance of 138’08.00" and fifth in the discus with a distance of 81’07.00".

Freshman Katherine McCalligett (Warwick, RI) placed first in the 200 meters with a time of 26.87 and first in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.10.

In upcoming action, RIC will compete at the Brown University Invitational on Saturday Apr. 13.
