Rhode Island College Spring Sports Update #4

Baseball

6-18 Overall Record; 0-7 in the Little East Conference

Head Coach Jay Grenier’s Anchormen are 6-18 overall and 0-7 in the Little East Conference. RIC went 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the LEC last week. The Anchormen fell to Bridgewater State 15-6 on Apr. 8, but bounced back to defeat Framingham State 8-1 on Apr. 10.

LEC rival UMASS-Dartmouth defeated RIC 13-2 on Apr. 11. The Anchormen executed their highest offensive output of the season with 19 runs scored against Clark on Apr. 12, taking the win 19-7. RIC closed out the week against LEC opponent Eastern Connecticut on Apr. 13, losing both games of the doubleheader 5-4 and 12-3.

Senior right fielder Russ Barron (Cranston, RI) has played in 24 games, starting all of them. He is batting .351 with 15 runs, 33 hits, ten doubles, one triple, two home runs, 19 RBI and two stolen bases.

Senior catcher/designated hitter Sean McNamara (Warwick, RI) has played in 19 games, starting 17 of them. He is batting .242 with nine runs, 16 hits, five doubles, four RBI and one stolen base.

Senior catcher/designated hitter Dave Quaglia (Attleboro, MA) has played in 24 games, starting all of them. He is batting .262 with 25 runs, 22 hits, ten doubles, two home runs and 17 RBI.

Junior pitcher Dan Furtado (East Providence, RI) has appeared in 11 games. He is 0-2 with a 9.87 ERA and ten strikeouts in 17.1 innings pitched.

Junior first basemen Eric Gibree (Bristol, RI) has played in 21 games, starting all of them. He is batting .316 with 14 runs, 25 hits, two doubles, three triples, two home runs and 14 RBI.

Junior outfielder Marco Neves (Pawtucket, RI) has played in nine games, starting three of them. He is batting .400 with two runs, four hits, one double and one RBI.

Junior third basemen Brian Peer (Windsor, CT) has played in 12 games, starting ten of them. He is batting .237 with seven runs, nine hits, one double and three RBI.

Sophomore pitcher Jeremy Edwards (Exeter, RI) has appeared in four games. He is 0-2 with one save, a 6.55 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 11.0 innings pitched.

Sophomore outfielder Ryan Lynch (Newport, RI) is out indefinitely with tendonitis in his shoulder. Lynch has played in ten games, starting six of them. He is batting .250 with three runs, four hits, one double and three RBI.

Sophomore second basemen Mike Melucci (Lincoln, RI) has played in 18 games, starting 15 of them. He is batting .279 with six runs, 17 hits, two doubles, two home runs, nine RBI and one stolen base.

Sophomore shortstop George Serra (Westerly, RI) has missed the last 12 games with a broken thumb. Serra has played in nine games, starting all of them. He is batting .313 with one run, ten hits, one double, five RBI and one stolen base.

Sophomore pitcher Jeff Steere (Chepachet, RI) has appeared in seven games, starting three of them. He is 0-2 with a 8.14 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 21.0 innings pitched.

Freshman center fielder Kyle Benchsky (Cranston, RI) has played in 24 games, starting 22 of them. He is batting .179 with nine runs, 12 hits, three doubles, one home run and five RBI.

Freshman pitcher/designated hitter Matthew Brannon (Cranston, RI) has appeared in nine games, starting five of them. He is 1-4 with a 4.72 ERA, two complete games and 34 strikeouts in 40.0 innings pitched. As a hitter, he has played in 12 games, starting ten of them. He is batting .282 with five runs, 11 hits, five doubles and seven RBI.

Freshman outfielder Joe Cerullo (Johnston, RI) has played in nine games, starting seven of them. He is batting .080 with one run, two hits and three RBI.

Freshman pitcher Seth DeCorte (Chepachet, RI) has appeared in seven games, starting two of them. He is 1-2 with a 5.73 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 22.0 innings pitched.

Freshman pitcher/outfielder Glenn Dusablon (North Smithfield, RI) earned Little East Conference Rookie of the Week honors for the second consecutive week. He has appeared in seven games, starting five of them. He is 3-1 with a 3.79 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 35.2 innings pitched. As a hitter, he has played in ten games, starting four of them. He is batting .211 with two runs and four hits.

Freshman second basemen/shortstop Mike Luke (Cranston, RI) has played in 20 games, starting 19 of them. He is batting .186 with 14 runs, 13 hits, two doubles, one home run, eight RBI and two stolen bases. Luke has been hit by a pitch 12 times this season, setting a RIC single season record. He trails all-time leader Andy Barron ’01 by two for the RIC career record.

Freshman pitcher Jim Milano (Johnston, RI) has appeared in six games, starting four of them. He is 0-4 with an 8.88 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 24.1 innings pitched.

Freshman infielder Anthony Pacitto (Johnston, RI) has played in five games. He has one run, two hits and one RBI.

Freshman outfielder Kevin Payette (Woonsocket, RI) has played in six games, starting four of them. He is batting .308 with two runs and four hits.

Freshman third basemen Chris Smaldone (Johnston, RI) has played in 23 games, starting 22 of them. He is batting .299 with 12 runs, 23 hits, three doubles, one triple, seven RBI and one stolen base.

In upcoming action, RIC will travel to UMASS-Dartmouth on Apr. 16 and to Wentworth on Apr. 18. RIC will host Western Connecticut on Apr. 19 and Plymouth State on Apr. 20.

 

Softball

19-4 Overall; 5-1 in the Little East Conference

Head Coach Maria Morin’s Anchorwomen are 19-4 overall and 5-1 in the Little East Conference. The Anchorwomen are off to the best start in the program’s history. RIC has won 18 of its last 20 games.

The team went 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the LEC last week. RIC split two games with Endicott College on Apr. 9, taking the first game 3-1 and losing the second 3-2. The Anchorwomen swept a doubleheader versus Gordon College on Apr. 11 (8-0, 7-3). The Anchorwomen won two games by forfeit from UMASS-Boston on Apr. 13. The Beacons began a doubleheader with only nine players and due to an injury in the bottom of the first inning in game one; they were required to forfeit the games. In the team’s final action of the week, RIC defeated Lasell College (8-0, 10-2) in both games of a doubleheader on Apr. 14.

Senior outfielder Keri Leighton (Providence, RI) has played in 14 games, starting 12 of them. She is batting .400 with one run, two hits and an RBI.

Junior first baseman Michele Fanelli (Pembroke Pines, FL) has played in 21 games, starting all of them. She is batting .440 with 18 runs, 33 hits, six doubles, three triples and 24 RBI.

Junior shortstop Melanie Miller (Warwick, RI) has played in 21 games, starting all of them. She is batting .260 with 16 runs, 19 hits, three doubles, five RBI and two stolen bases.

Junior second basemen Caitlin Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) has played in 21 games, starting 20 of them. She is batting .214 with eight runs, nine hits, one double, six RBI and one stolen base.

Sophomore catcher Katie Ferreira (Rehoboth, MA) has played in 14 games, starting all of them. She is batting .259 with five runs, seven hits and two RBI.

Sophomore centerfielder Sue Gaber (Colchester, CT) has played in 20 games, starting all of them. She is batting .308 with ten runs, 16 hits and eight RBI.

Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Kim Warrington (North Kingstown, RI) has appeared in 13 games, starting 11 of them. She is 9-1 with a 0.77 ERA, 11 complete games, five shutouts, and 68 strikeouts in 81.1 innings. As a hitter, she has played in 18 games, starting 14 of them. She is batting .234 with seven runs, 11 hits, one double, four triples, nine RBI and two stolen bases.

Freshman catcher Kristen Bartolucci (Ledyard, CT) has played in eight games, starting six of them. She is batting .286 with six runs, six hits, and five RBI.

Freshman catcher Rachael Caldwell (Shannock, RI) has played in 21 games, starting 20 of them. She is batting .365 with 11 runs, 23 hits, six doubles, one triple, one home run and 18 RBI.

Freshman infielder Amy Machado (Newport, RI) has played in 20 games, starting 18 of them. She is batting .389 with 14 runs, 21 hits, one double, two triples, 13 RBI and two stolen bases.

Freshman outfielder Jennifer Puniello (Bristol, RI) has played in 12 games, starting eight of them. She is batting .375 with five runs, nine hits and nine RBI.

Freshman infielder Aimee Reed (Pawcatuck, CT) has played in 13 games, starting ten of them. She is batting .367 with nine runs, 11 hits and six RBI.

Freshman pitcher/left fielder Casey Soares (Swansea, MA) has appeared in 11 games, starting ten of them. She is 8-3 with a 1.68 ERA, eight complete games, two shutouts and 46 strikeouts in 58.1 innings pitched. As a hitter, she has played in 21 games, starting all of them. She is batting .306 with 19 runs, 19 hits, five doubles, one triple, eight RBI and two stolen bases.

In upcoming action, RIC will travel to UMASS-Dartmouth on Apr. 16 and to Plymouth State on Apr. 20.

Women’s Lacrosse

1-4 Overall; 0-2 in the Little East Conference

Head Coach Matt Coleman’s Anchorwomen are 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the Little East Conference.

RIC won its first game in the program’s two-year history last week, defeating Elms College 19-3 on Apr. 11. The Anchorwomen’s 19 goals were not only a school record for a game, but eclipsed the Anchorwomen’s entire offensive output in ’01 by six goals. RIC went 1-2 on the week, losing both of its conference games against UMASS-Dartmouth on Apr. 9 (8-3) and Keene State on Apr. 13 (17-5).

Junior attack wing Rachel Pecoraro (Smithfield, RI) has played in five games, starting all of them. She has ten goals for ten points and four ground balls. Pecoraro scored five goals in the win against Elms.

Junior attack wing Shannon Hughey (Warwick, RI) has played in four games, starting all of them. She has 15 goals for 15 points, 11 ground balls and eight draw controls. Hughey set a school record for a single game with nine goals in the win against Elms.

Sophomore attack wing Kim Wells (Granby, CT) has played in four games, starting all of them. She has one goal for one point and seven ground balls.

Freshman center/attack wing Amanda Hutchins (Gilmanton, NH) has played in five games, starting all of them. She has nine ground balls and four draw controls.

Sophomore attack Sharon Donahue (North Providence, RI) has played in five games.

Freshman attack Danielle Beaudry (West Greenwich, RI) has played in five games, starting all of them. She has three goals and three assists for six points, seven ground balls and one draw control.

Freshman attack Veronica Munroe (Wakefield, RI) has played in five games, starting four of them. She has one ground ball.

Freshman attack Elizabeth Valeika (Woonsocket, RI) has played in five games, starting all of them. She has two goals for two points and one ground ball.

Junior defense wing Lauren Dettore (Cranston, RI) has played in three games. She has one draw control.

Sophomore defense wing Katie Anderson (Rehoboth, MA) has played in two games, starting both of them.

Freshman defense wing Corinne Gervais (Woonsocket, RI) has played in five games, starting three of them. She has one assist for one point, one ground ball and one draw control.

Sophomore defense Cara Collins (Johnston, RI) has played in five games, starting all of them. She has two ground balls.

Sophomore defense Kristin Mandsager (Portsmouth, RI) has played in five games, starting two of them.

Sophomore defense Amy Pinette (Middletown, RI) has played in five games, starting all of them. She has two ground balls and two draw controls.

Freshman defense Erika Babat (North Kingstown, RI) has played in five games, starting all of them. She has 11 ground balls, one pass interception, and eight draw controls.

Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Gerde (West Islip, NY) has played in five games, starting all of them. She has 70 saves with a .530 save percentage and six ground balls. Gerde set a school record with 23 saves in the loss against UMASS-Dartmouth.

In upcoming action, RIC host Southern Maine on Apr. 18 and Plymouth State on Apr. 20.

Men’s Tennis

1-6 Overall; 0-2 in the Little East

Head Coach John Martellino’s Anchormen are 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the Little East Conference.

RIC went 0-2 last week, losing to Salve Regina 8-1 on Apr. 8 and to Southern Maine 9-0 on Apr. 13.

Junior Jeff Teixeira (Attleboro, MA) is 1-5 (.167) in singles matches and 1-6 (.143) in doubles matches for 1.5 points.

Sophomore Marc Pasonelli (Cranston, RI) is 1-6 (.143) in singles matches and 1-6 (.143) in doubles matches for 1.5 points.

Sophomore Julio Andrade (Cranston, RI) is 0-7 (.000) in singles matches and 1-6 (.143) in doubles matches for 0.5 points.

Freshman Andre LaBonte (Harrisville, RI) is 2-5 (.286) in singles matches and 2-5 (.286) in doubles matches for 3.0 points.

Freshman Adam Pierpaoli (Smithfield, RI) is 4-3 (.571) in singles matches and 1-6 (.143) in doubles matches for 4.5 points.

Freshman Tim Smith (Jamestown, RI) is 1-6 (.143) in singles matches and 2-5 (.286) in doubles matches for 2.0 points.

In coming action, RIC host Johnson & Wales this afternoon then travel to Western Connecticut on Apr. 18 and UMASS-Dartmouth on Apr. 20.

Men’s Golf

0-2

Head Coach John Fitta’s Anchormen are 0-2. RIC lost to Wentworth 372-376 on Apr. 8 in the team’s lone match of the week.

Junior John Ginolfi (Warwick, RI) shot a score of 94 on the day. He shot a score of 49 on the front nine and 51 on the back nine.

Junior Joe Padykula (Seekonk, MA) shot a score of 95 on the day. He shot a score of 53 on the front nine and 42 on the back nine.

Sophomore Ken Ferrara (North Providence, RI) shot a score of 92 on the day. He shot a score of 49 on the front nine and 43 on the back nine.

Sophomore Brian Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) shot a score of 95 on the day. He shot a score of 45 on the front nine and 50 on the back nine.

In upcoming action, RIC will host a quad match against Wesleyan University, Connecticut College and Worcester State College on Apr. 19 to close out the week.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Head Coach Kevin Jackson’s Anchormen competed at the Bridgewater State College Invitational on Apr. 13. The meet did not have team scoring.

Junior Brian Carney (Barrington, RI) placed ninth in the long jump with a distance of 13’01.50" and 21st in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.75.

Junior Mike Daniels (Warwick, RI) placed fifth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:03.91.

Junior Charm Howie (Providence, RI) placed 12th in the 200 meters with a time of 25.05.

Sophomore Charles Kuti (Providence, RI) placed 11th in the 100 meters with a time of 12.25.

Junior Tim Rudd (Warwick, RI) placed third in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:09.24 and second in the 800 meters with a time of 1:58.79.

Junior Rob Wahnon (Framingham, MA) placed ninth in the javelin with a distance of 110’06.00" and 26th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:23.17.

Sophomore Joe Giardina (West Warwick, RI) placed 18th in the 5,000 meters with a time of 20:47.28.

Sophomore Jeremy Meyer (Miami, FL) placed 19th in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.86.

Sophomore James Peluso (Johnston, RI) placed fourth in the pole vault with a height of 10’00.00".

Freshman German Cardona (Pawtucket, RI) placed 17th in the 200 meters with a time of 26.12.

Freshman Matt Faria (Seekonk, MA) placed 17th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:13.07.

Freshman Chris Fernandes (Cumberland, RI) placed fourth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.17.

Freshman Charles Hewes (East Hampton, CT) placed ninth in the shot with a distance of 37’04.50" and 12th in the discus with a distance of 102’05.00".

Freshman Matt Kelly (Carver, MA) placed sixth in the javelin with a distance of 132’01.00", 16th in the hammer with a distance of 67’01.00" and 20th in the 200 meters with a time of 26.73.

Freshman Joe Parenteau (Smithfield, RI) placed seventh in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:20.62.

In upcoming action, RIC will compete at the Northeastern Invitational on Apr. 20.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Junior Joanne Pora (Attleboro, MA) placed fourth in the javelin with a distance of 97’03.00", eighth in the hammer with a distance of 99’01.00".

Sophomore Michelle Boudreau (Lincoln, RI) placed 13th in the 3,000 meters with a time of 12:31.26.

Freshman Shari Fenton (West Warwick, RI) placed fifth in the hammer with a distance of 115’05.00".

Freshman Courtney Gardiner (Warwick, RI) placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 32’04.75".

Freshman Jessica Leonard (Warwick, RI) placed third in the hammer with a distance of 129’01.00".

Freshman Kara Maggio (Warwick, RI) placed fifth in the javelin with a distance of 92’00.00".

Freshman Rolanda Mangum (Providence, RI) placed first in the hammer with a distance of 136’07.00" and third in the shot with a distance of 30’06.50".

Freshman Katherine McCalligett (Warwick, RI) placed first in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.57.
