Rhode Island College Spring Sports Update #5

Baseball

7-22 Overall Record; 0-10 in the Little East Conference

Head Coach Jay Grenier’s Anchormen are 7-22 overall and 0-10 in the Little East Conference. RIC went 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the LEC last week. The Anchormen fell to UMASS-Dartmouth 7-2 on Apr. 16, but bounced back to defeat Wentworth 6-1 on Apr. 18.

The following day on Apr. 19, RIC lost to Wheaton College 12-2. The Anchormen closed out the week against LEC foe Plymouth State on Apr. 20. RIC lost both games of the doubleheader 13-6 and 12-8.

Senior right fielder Russ Barron (Cranston, RI) has played in 29 games, starting all of them. He is batting .336 with 18 runs, 38 hits, 11 doubles, one triple, three home runs, 21 RBI and two stolen bases.

Senior catcher/designated hitter Sean McNamara (Warwick, RI) has played in 23 games, starting 20 of them. He is batting .218 with 12 runs, 17 hits, five doubles, five RBI and one stolen base.

Senior catcher/designated hitter Dave Quaglia (Attleboro, MA) has played in 29 games, starting all of them. He is batting .280 with 29 runs, 28 hits, 12 doubles, four home runs and 22 RBI.

Junior pitcher Dan Furtado (East Providence, RI) has appeared in 11 games. He is 0-2 with a 9.87 ERA and ten strikeouts in 17.1 innings pitched.

Junior first basemen Eric Gibree (Bristol, RI) has played in 26 games, starting all of them. He is batting .303 with 15 runs, 30 hits, three doubles, three triples, two home runs, 14 RBI, and one stolen base.

Junior outfielder Marco Neves (Pawtucket, RI) has played in nine games, starting three of them. He is batting .400 with two runs, four hits, one double and one RBI.

Junior third basemen Brian Peer (Windsor, CT) has played in 15 games, starting 12 of them. He is batting .239 with seven runs, 11 hits, two doubles and four RBI.

Sophomore pitcher Jeremy Edwards (Exeter, RI) has appeared in five games. He is 0-3 with one save, a 7.63 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 15.1 innings pitched.

Sophomore outfielder Ryan Lynch (Newport, RI) has played in 11 games, starting six of them. He is batting .250 with three runs, four hits, one double and three RBI.

Sophomore second basemen Mike Melucci (Lincoln, RI) has played in 21 games, starting 17 of them. He is batting .250 with six runs, 18 hits, two doubles, two home runs, 11 RBI and one stolen base.

Sophomore shortstop George Serra (Westerly, RI) has played in 14 games, starting all of them. He is batting .269 with six run, 14 hits, one double, one triple, nine RBI and two stolen bases.

Sophomore pitcher Jeff Steere (Chepachet, RI) has appeared in nine games, starting four of them. He is 0-3 with a 7.50 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 30.0 innings pitched.

Freshman center fielder Kyle Benchsky (Cranston, RI) has played in 29 games, starting 27 of them. He is batting .193 with 12 runs, 16 hits, three doubles, two home runs, nine RBI and four stolen bases.

Freshman pitcher/designated hitter Matthew Brannon (Cranston, RI) has appeared in 11 games, starting six of them. He is 1-4 with a 5.06 ERA, two complete games and 38 strikeouts in 48.0 innings pitched. As a hitter, he has played in 16 games, starting 14 of them. He is batting .241 with six runs, 14 hits, five doubles and eight RBI.

Freshman outfielder Joe Cerullo (Johnston, RI) has played in nine games, starting seven of them. He is batting .080 with one run, two hits and three RBI.

Freshman pitcher Seth DeCorte (Chepachet, RI) has appeared in eight games, starting two of them. He is 1-2 with a 4.72 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 26.2 innings pitched.

Freshman pitcher/outfielder Glenn Dusablon (North Smithfield, RI) has appeared in eight games, starting six of them. He is 3-2 with a 4.75 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 41.2 innings pitched. As a hitter, he has played in 14 games, starting seven of them. He is batting .250 with four runs, eight hits and one double.

Freshman second basemen/shortstop Mike Luke (Cranston, RI) has played in 23 games, starting 22 of them. He is batting .195 with 15 runs, 16 hits, two doubles, one home run, nine RBI and three stolen bases. Luke has been hit by a pitch 13 times this season, setting a RIC single season record. He trails all-time leader Andy Barron ’01 by one for the RIC career record.

Freshman pitcher Jim Milano (Johnston, RI) has appeared in seven games, starting five of them. He is 1-4 with a 6.48 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 33.1 innings pitched.

Freshman infielder Anthony Pacitto (Johnston, RI) has played in six games. He has one run, two hits and one RBI.

Freshman outfielder Kevin Payette (Woonsocket, RI) has played in six games, starting four of them. He is batting .308 with two runs and four hits.

Freshman third basemen Chris Smaldone (Johnston, RI) has played in 27 games, starting 25 of them. He is batting .278 with 13 runs, 25 hits, three doubles, one triple, nine RBI and two stolen bases.

In upcoming action, RIC will travel to Wheaton College on Apr. 24 and to UMASS-Boston on Apr. 27. RIC will host Salve Regina on Apr. 28 to close out the week.

 

Softball

20-7 Overall; 6-4 in the Little East Conference

Head Coach Maria Morin’s Anchorwomen are 20-7 overall and 6-4 in the Little East Conference.

The Anchorwomen played four games last week, all against LEC opposition. The team split a doubleheader with UMASS-Dartmouth on Apr. 16 (2-0, 0-2). The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak. RIC was shut out by Plymouth State in both games of a doubleheader on Apr. 20 by a score of 2-0 in both contests.

Senior outfielder Keri Leighton (Providence, RI) has played in 17 games, starting 15 of them. She is batting .400 with one run, two hits and an RBI.

Junior first baseman Michele Fanelli (Pembroke Pines, FL) has played in 25 games, starting all of them. She is batting .398 with 18 runs, 35 hits, six doubles, three triples and 24 RBI.

Junior shortstop Melanie Miller (Warwick, RI) has played in 25 games, starting all of them. She is batting .267 with 16 runs, 23 hits, three doubles, five RBI and two stolen bases.

Junior second basemen Caitlin Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) has played in 25 games, starting 24 of them. She is batting .216 with eight runs, 11 hits, one double, six RBI and one stolen base.

Sophomore catcher Katie Ferreira (Rehoboth, MA) has played in 15 games, starting all of them. She is batting .259 with five runs, seven hits and two RBI.

Sophomore centerfielder Sue Gaber (Colchester, CT) has played in 24 games, starting all of them. She is batting .258 with ten runs, 16 hits and eight RBI.

Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Kim Warrington (North Kingstown, RI) has appeared in 16 games, starting 14 of them. She is 10-3 with a 0.91 ERA, 13 complete games, six shutouts, and 89 strikeouts in 100.1 innings. As a hitter, she has played in 22 games, starting 18 of them. She is batting .211 with seven runs, 12 hits, one double, four triples, nine RBI and two stolen bases.

Freshman catcher Kristen Bartolucci (Ledyard, CT) has played in eight games, starting six of them. She is batting .286 with six runs, six hits, and five RBI.

Freshman catcher Rachael Caldwell (Shannock, RI) has played in 25 games, starting 24 of them. She is batting .342 with 11 runs, 25 hits, seven doubles, one triple, one home run and 18 RBI.

Freshman infielder Amy Machado (Newport, RI) has played in 24 games, starting 22 of them. She is batting .318 with 14 runs, 21 hits, one double, two triples, 14 RBI and two stolen bases.

Freshman outfielder Jennifer Puniello (Bristol, RI) has played in 15 games, starting 11 of them. She is batting .387 with five runs, 12 hits and nine RBI.

Freshman infielder Aimee Reed (Pawcatuck, CT) has played in 14 games, starting 11 of them. She is batting .333 with nine runs, 11 hits and six RBI.

Freshman pitcher/left fielder Casey Soares (Swansea, MA) has appeared in 12 games, starting 11 of them. She is 8-4 with a 1.52 ERA, nine complete games, two shutouts and 52 strikeouts in 64.1 innings pitched. As a hitter, she has played in 25 games, starting all of them. She is batting .297 with 21 runs, 22 hits, six doubles, one triple, eight RBI and two stolen bases.

In upcoming action, RIC will host Western Connecticut on Apr. 23. The Anchorwomen will travel to Roger Williams on Apr. 25 and to Eastern Connecticut on Apr. 27.

Women’s Lacrosse

2-5 Overall; 1-3 in the Little East Conference

Head Coach Matt Coleman’s Anchorwomen are 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the Little East Conference.

RIC went 1-1 last week, defeating Southern Maine 5-4 in overtime on Apr. 18. It was the program’s second win ever as a varsity sport. RIC lost to Plymouth State 16-0 on Apr. 20. Both contests were conference matches.

Junior attack wing Rachel Pecoraro (Smithfield, RI) has played in seven games, starting all of them. She has 13 goals for 13 points, six ground balls and three draw controls.

Junior attack wing Shannon Hughey (Warwick, RI) has played in six games, starting all of them. She has 17 goals for 17 points, 15 ground balls and 11 draw controls. Hughey scored the game-winning goal in overtime against Southern Maine.

Sophomore attack wing Kim Wells (Granby, CT) has played in six games, starting all of them. She has one goal for one point and eight ground balls.

Freshman center/attack wing Amanda Hutchins (Gilmanton, NH) has played in seven games, starting all of them. She has 19 ground balls and seven draw controls.

Sophomore attack Sharon Donahue (North Providence, RI) has played in six games.

Freshman attack Danielle Beaudry (West Greenwich, RI) has played in five games, starting all of them. She has three goals and three assists for six points, seven ground balls and one draw control.

Freshman attack Veronica Munroe (Wakefield, RI) has played in six games, starting four of them. She has two ground balls.

Freshman attack Elizabeth Valeika (Woonsocket, RI) has played in seven games, starting all of them. She has two goals for two points and three ground balls.

Junior defense wing Lauren Dettore (Cranston, RI) has played in five games, starting two of them. She has two ground balls and two draw controls.

Sophomore defense wing Katie Anderson (Rehoboth, MA) has played in four games, starting all of them. She has three ground balls.

Freshman defense wing Corinne Gervais (Woonsocket, RI) has played in seven games, starting four of them. She has one assist for one point, two ground balls and two draw controls

Sophomore defense Cara Collins (Johnston, RI) has played in seven games, starting all of them. She has three ground balls and three draw controls.

Sophomore defense Kristin Mandsager (Portsmouth, RI) has played in seven games, starting four of them. She has five ground balls

Sophomore defense Amy Pinette (Middletown, RI) has played in six games, starting all of them. She has five ground balls and four draw controls.

Freshman defense Erika Babat (North Kingstown, RI) has played in seven games, starting all of them. She has 18 ground balls, one pass interception, and ten draw controls.

Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Gerde (West Islip, NY) has played in seven games, starting all of them. She has 96 saves with a .539 save percentage and ten ground balls.

In upcoming action, RIC will travel to Western Connecticut on Apr. 25 and Eastern Connecticut on Apr. 27.

Men’s Tennis

1-9 Overall; 0-4 in the Little East

Head Coach John Martellino’s Anchormen are 1-9 overall and 0-4 in the Little East Conference.

RIC went 0-3 last week, losing to Johnson & Wales 9-0 on Apr. 15, Western Connecticut 8-1 on Apr. 17 and UMASS-Dartmouth 9-0 on Apr. 20.

Junior Jeff Teixeira (Attleboro, MA) is 2-7 (.222) in singles matches and 1-8 (.111) in doubles matches for 2.5 points.

Sophomore Marc Pasonelli (Cranston, RI) is 1-9 (.100) in singles matches and 1-9 (.100) in doubles matches for 1.5 points.

Sophomore Julio Andrade (Cranston, RI) is 0-10 (.000) in singles matches and 1-9 (.100) in doubles matches for 0.5 points.

Freshman Andre LaBonte (Harrisville, RI) is 2-8 (.200) in singles matches and 2-8 (.200) in doubles matches for 3.0 points.

Freshman Adam Pierpaoli (Smithfield, RI) is 4-6 (.400) in singles matches and 1-9 (.100) in doubles matches for 4.5 points.

Freshman Tim Smith (Jamestown, RI) is 1-9 (.100) in singles matches and 2-7 (.222) in doubles matches for 2.5 points.

In coming action, RIC will travel to Wheaton College on Apr. 23 and host Newbury College on Apr. 25. The Anchormen close out the week at Plymouth State on Apr. 27.

Men’s Golf

0-3

Head Coach John Fitta’s Anchormen are 0-3. RIC fell to Wesleyan 361-326 in the team’s only action of the week on Apr. 19.

Junior John Ginolfi (Warwick, RI) shot a score of 96 against Wesleyan.

Junior Joe Padykula (Seekonk, MA) shot a score of 93 on the day.

Sophomore Ken Ferrara (North Providence, RI) shot a score of 82 on the day.

Sophomore Brian Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) shot a score of 90 on the day.

In upcoming action, RIC will host a tri-match against Roger Williams and Newbury College on Apr. 24 at Triggs Memorial Golf Course. The Anchormen will host Johnson & Wales on Apr. 26 at Pawtucket Country Club.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Head Coach Kevin Jackson’s Anchormen competed at the Northeastern Invitational on Apr. 20. The meet did not have team scoring.

Junior Brian Carney (Barrington, RI) placed 35th in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.14.

Junior Mike Daniels (Warwick, RI) placed 21st in the 800 meters with a time of 1:59.87 and 25th in the javelin with a distance of 35’10.25".

Junior  James Giammarco (Southington, CT) placed 35th in the javelin with a distance of 101’00.75".

Junior Charm Howie (Providence, RI) placed 38th in the 200 meters with a time of 24.68.

Sophomore Charles Kuti (Providence, RI) placed 31st in the 100 meters with a time of 11.83.

Junior Tim Rudd (Warwick, RI) placed 15th in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:01.80 and 17th in the 800 meters with a time of 1:58.10.

Freshman German Cardona (Pawtucket, RI) placed 44th in the 200 meters with a time of 25.32.

Freshman Ruben Feliz (Providence, RI) placed 40th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:04.71.

Freshman Chris Fernandes (Cumberland, RI) placed 13th in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.11.

Freshman Charles Hewes (East Hampton, CT) placed tenth in the shot with a distance of 40’00.50" and 31st in the discus with a distance of 72’.00.00".

Freshman Matt Kelly (Carver, MA) placed 29th in the javelin with a distance of 128’01.25" and 36th in the hammer with a distance of 71’10.50".

Freshman Joe Parenteau (Smithfield, RI) placed 33rd in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:13.21.

In upcoming action, the Little East/MASCAC Alliance Championships will be held on Apr. 27 at Westfield State College.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Head Coach Kevin Jackson’s Anchorwomen competed at the Northeastern Invitational on Apr. 20. The meet did not have team scoring.

Senior Crisolita da Cruz (Providence, RI) placed seventh in the hammer with a distance of 128’11.50" and 17th in the discus with a distance of 74’07.50".

Senior Joyelle Galli (Exeter, RI) placed 13th in the triple jump with a distance of 32’03.50"and 15th in the long jump with a distance of 15’04.00".

Junior Michele Dunphy (Cranston, RI) placed 23rd in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:38.02 and 31st in the 800 meters with a time of 2:46.07.

Junior Leslie Eastwood (East Providence, RI) placed 25th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:39.26.

Junior Joanne Pora (Attleboro, MA) placed nine in the javelin with a distance of 96’03.50"and 11th in the hammer with a distance of 113’02.50".

Freshman Courtney Gardiner (Warwick, RI) placed 15th in the triple jump with a distance of 30’06.50".

Freshman Jessica Leonard (Warwick, RI) placed eighth in the hammer with a distance of 123’05.25".

Freshman Kara Maggio (Warwick, RI) placed 20th in the javelin with a distance of 71’02.50".

Freshman Rolanda Mangum (Providence, RI) placed second in the hammer with a distance of 149’09.00" and 12th in the discus with a distance of 88’07.25". Mangum is a NCAA Provisional Qualifier in the hammer.

Freshman Katherine McCalligett (Warwick, RI) placed fifth in the 200 meters with a time of 26.90 and ninth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.74.

In upcoming action, the Little East/MASCAC Alliance Championships will be held on Apr. 27 at Westfield State College.
