Rhode Island College Spring Sports Update #6

Baseball

9-23 Overall Record; 2-10 in the Little East Conference

Head Coach Jay Grenier’s Anchormen are 9-23 overall and 2-10 in the Little East Conference. RIC went 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the LEC last week. The Anchormen fell short against perennial powerhouse Wheaton 6-4 on Apr. 24, but picked up their first conference wins with a sweep over UMass-Boston on Apr. 27. The Anchormen took game one 11-1 and won the second 10-8.

Senior right fielder Russ Barron (Cranston, RI) has played in 32 games, starting all of them. He is batting .323 with 20 runs, 40 hits, 11 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 22 RBI and two stolen bases.

Senior catcher/designated hitter Sean McNamara (Warwick, RI) has played in 25 games, starting 22 of them. He is batting .233 with 14 runs, 20 hits, six doubles, five RBI and one stolen base.

Senior catcher/designated hitter Dave Quaglia (Attleboro, MA) has played in 32 games, starting all of them. He is batting .281 with 32 runs, 32 hits, 13 doubles, five home runs and 26 RBI.

Junior pitcher Dan Furtado (East Providence, RI) has appeared in 12 games. He is 0-2 with a 8.84 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 19.1 innings pitched.

Junior first basemen Eric Gibree (Bristol, RI) has played in 29 games, starting all of them. He is batting .306 with 18 runs, 34 hits, three doubles, four triples, four home runs, 21 RBI, and one stolen base.

Junior outfielder Marco Neves (Pawtucket, RI) has played in ten games, starting three of them. He is batting .417 with three runs, five hits, one double and two RBI.

Junior third basemen Brian Peer (Windsor, CT) has played in 16 games, starting 13 of them. He is batting .255 with nine runs, 13 hits, two doubles and four RBI.

Sophomore pitcher Jeremy Edwards (Exeter, RI) has appeared in six games, starting three of them. He is 1-3 with one save, a 5.24 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 22.1 innings pitched.

Sophomore outfielder Ryan Lynch (Newport, RI) has played in 12 games, starting seven of them. He is batting .222 with four runs, four hits, one double and three RBI.

Sophomore second basemen Mike Melucci (Lincoln, RI) has played in 23 games, starting 19 of them. He is batting .259 with eight runs, 21 hits, four doubles, three home runs, 14 RBI and one stolen base.

Sophomore shortstop George Serra (Westerly, RI) has played in 16 games, starting all of them. He is batting .311 with eight runs, 19 hits, three doubles, one triple, seven RBI and one stolen base.

Sophomore pitcher Jeff Steere (Chepachet, RI) has appeared in ten games, starting five of them. He is 0-3 with a 6.63 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 36.2 innings pitched.

Freshman center fielder Kyle Benchsky (Cranston, RI) has played in 30 games, starting 28 of them. He is batting .195 with 12 runs, 17 hits, three doubles, two home runs, nine RBI and five stolen bases.

Freshman pitcher/designated hitter Matthew Brannon (Cranston, RI) has appeared in 12 games, starting seven of them. He is 2-4 with a 4.53 ERA, two complete games and 48 strikeouts in 55.2 innings pitched. As a hitter, he has played in 16 games, starting 14 of them. He is batting .227 with six runs, 15 hits, five doubles and nine RBI.

Freshman outfielder Joe Cerullo (Johnston, RI) has played in nine games, starting seven of them. He is batting .080 with one run, two hits and three RBI.

Freshman pitcher Seth DeCorte (Chepachet, RI) has appeared in ten games, starting two of them. He is 1-2 with one save, a 4.45 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 28.1 innings pitched.

Freshman pitcher/outfielder Glenn Dusablon (North Smithfield, RI) has appeared in eight games, starting six of them. He is 3-2 with a 4.75 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 41.2 innings pitched. As a hitter, he has played in 17 games, starting ten of them. He is batting .302 with eight runs, 13 hits, one double, one home run, two RBI and one stolen base.

Freshman second basemen/shortstop Mike Luke (Cranston, RI) has played in 26 games, starting 24 of them. He is batting .211 with 18 runs, 19 hits, two doubles, one home run, 11 RBI and three stolen bases. Luke has been hit by a pitch 13 times this season, setting a RIC single season record. He trails all-time leader Andy Barron ’01 by one for the RIC career record.

Freshman pitcher Jim Milano (Johnston, RI) has appeared in eight games, starting five of them. He is 1-5 with a 6.82 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 34.1 innings pitched.

Freshman infielder Anthony Pacitto (Johnston, RI) has played in seven games. He has one run, two hits and one RBI.

Freshman third basemen Chris Smaldone (Johnston, RI) has played in 29 games, starting 27 of them. He is batting .265 with 14 runs, 26 hits, three doubles, one triple, nine RBI and two stolen bases.

In upcoming action, RIC will host Coast Guard on May 1 and travel to Johnson & Wales on the following day. The Anchormen conclude the regular season with a doubleheader vs. Western Connecticut at home on May 4.

 

Softball

22-10 Overall; 7-7 in the Little East Conference

Head Coach Maria Morin’s Anchorwomen are 22-10 overall and 7-7 in the Little East Conference.

The Anchorwomen went 2-3 last week. RIC was swept by LEC rival Western Connecticut (2-1, 7-0) on Apr. 23. The team defeated Roger Williams 3-2 on Apr. 25 before splitting the regular season finale with LEC opponent Eastern Connecticut on Apr. 27. The Anchorwomen dropped the first game 7-1, but came back to win the second 3-2.

Senior outfielder Keri Leighton (Providence, RI) has played in 22 games, starting 19 of them. She is batting .400 with one run, two hits and an RBI.

Junior first baseman Michele Fanelli (Pembroke Pines, FL) has played in 30 games, starting all of them. She is batting .388 with 21 runs, 40 hits, six doubles, four triples, 25 RBI and one stolen base.

Junior shortstop Melanie Miller (Warwick, RI) has played in 30 games, starting all of them. She is batting .235 with 16 runs, 24 hits, three doubles, five RBI and two stolen bases.

Junior second basemen Caitlin Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) has played in 30 games, starting 29 of them. She is batting .185 with eight runs, 12 hits, one double, six RBI and one stolen base.

Sophomore catcher Katie Ferreira (Rehoboth, MA) has played in 17 games, starting 16 of them. She is batting .219 with five runs, seven hits and two RBI.

Sophomore centerfielder Sue Gaber (Colchester, CT) has played in 29 games, starting all of them. She is batting .233 with 11 runs, 17 hits and eight RBI.

Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Kim Warrington (North Kingstown, RI) has appeared in 20 games, starting 18 of them. She is 11-6 with a 1.02 ERA, 16 complete games, six shutouts, and 113 strikeouts in 123.1 innings. As a hitter, she has played in 26 games, starting 22 of them. She is batting .188 with seven runs, 13 hits, one double, four triples, nine RBI and two stolen bases.

Freshman catcher Rachael Caldwell (Shannock, RI) has played in 30 games, starting 29 of them. She is batting .330 with 12 runs, 29 hits, nine doubles, one triple, one home run and 21 RBI.

Freshman infielder Amy Machado (Newport, RI) has played in 29 games, starting 27 of them. She is batting .289 with 15 runs, 24 hits, one double, two triples, 15 RBI and two stolen bases.

Freshman outfielder Jennifer Puniello (Bristol, RI) has played in 20 games, starting 16 of them. She is batting .378 with five runs, 17 hits and 11 RBI.

Freshman infielder Aimee Reed (Pawcatuck, CT) has played in 14 games, starting 11 of them. She is batting .333 with nine runs, 11 hits and six RBI.

Freshman pitcher/left fielder Casey Soares (Swansea, MA) has appeared in 14 games, starting 12 of them. She is 9-4 with a 1.77 ERA, ten complete games, two shutouts and 60 strikeouts in 75.1 innings pitched. As a hitter, she has played in 30 games, starting all of them. She is batting .315 with 23 runs, 28 hits, seven doubles, two triples, eight RBI and three stolen bases.

In upcoming action, RIC will travel to Eastern Connecticut for the first round of the Little East Conference playoffs on Apr. 30.

Women’s Lacrosse

2-7 Overall; 1-5 in the Little East Conference

Head Coach Matt Coleman’s Anchorwomen are 2-7 overall and 1-5 in the Little East Conference.

RIC went 0-2 last week, falling to conference rivals Western Connecticut and Eastern Connecticut. The Anchorwomen lost to Western Connecticut 19-4 on Apr. 25 and fell 22-5 to Eastern Connecticut on Apr. 27.

Junior attack wing Rachel Pecoraro (Smithfield, RI) has played in nine games, starting all of them. She has 15 goals for 15 points, seven ground balls and four draw controls.

Junior attack wing Shannon Hughey (Warwick, RI) has played in eight games, starting all of them. She has 22 goals for 22 points, 16 ground balls and 17 draw controls.

Sophomore attack wing Kim Wells (Granby, CT) has played in eight games, starting all of them. She has one goal for one point and nine ground balls.

Freshman center/attack wing Amanda Hutchins (Gilmanton, NH) has played in nine games, starting all of them. She has one goal for one point, 23 ground balls and nine draw controls.

Sophomore attackman Sharon Donahue (North Providence, RI) has played in seven games.

Freshman attackman Danielle Beaudry (West Greenwich, RI) has played in seven games, starting all of them. She has four goals and three assists for seven points, nine ground balls and one draw control.

Freshman attackman Veronica Munroe (Wakefield, RI) has played in seven games, starting four of them. She has two ground balls.

Freshman attackman Elizabeth Valeika (Woonsocket, RI) has played in seven games, starting all of them. She has two goals for two points and three ground balls.

Junior defense wing Lauren Dettore (Cranston, RI) has played in seven games, starting three of them. She has four ground balls and three draw controls.

Sophomore defense wing Katie Anderson (Rehoboth, MA) has played in six games, starting five of them. She has five ground balls.

Freshman defense wing Corinne Gervais (Woonsocket, RI) has played in eight games, starting four of them. She has one assist for one point, two ground balls and two draw controls

Sophomore defenseman Cara Collins (Johnston, RI) has played in nine games, starting all of them. She has four ground balls and three draw controls.

Sophomore defenseman Kristin Mandsager (Portsmouth, RI) has played in nine games, starting six of them. She has seven ground balls and one draw control.

Sophomore defenseman Amy Pinette (Middletown, RI) has played in eight games, starting all of them. She has one assist for one point, seven ground balls and four draw controls.

Freshman defenseman Erika Babat (North Kingstown, RI) has played in nine games, starting all of them. She has 23 ground balls, one pass interception, and 13 draw controls.

Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Gerde (West Islip, NY) has played in nine games, starting all of them. She has 115 saves with a .483 save percentage and 15 ground balls.

In upcoming action, RIC will host Elms College on Apr. 29. The Anchorwomen will then travel to Keene State for the first round of the Little East Conference playoffs on Apr. 30.

Men’s Tennis

1-11 Overall; 0-5 in the Little East

Head Coach John Martellino’s Anchormen are 1-11 overall and 0-5 in the Little East Conference.

RIC went 0-2 last week, losing to Wheaton 7-0 on Apr. 23 and LEC rival Plymouth State 9-0 on Apr. 27.

Junior Jeff Teixeira (Attleboro, MA) is 2-9 (.182) in singles matches and 1-10 (.090) in doubles matches for 2.5 points.

Sophomore Marc Pasonelli (Cranston, RI) is 1-10 (.090) in singles matches and 1-11 (.083) in doubles matches for 1.5 points.

Sophomore Julio Andrade (Cranston, RI) is 0-12 (.000) in singles matches and 1-11 (.083) in doubles matches for 0.5 points.

Freshman Andre LaBonte (Harrisville, RI) is 2-9 (.182) in singles matches and 2-9 (.182) in doubles matches for 3.0 points.

Freshman Adam Pierpaoli (Smithfield, RI) is 4-9 (.308) in singles matches and 1-11 (.083) in doubles matches for 4.5 points.

Freshman Tim Smith (Jamestown, RI) is 1-11 (.083) in singles matches and 2-8 (.200) in doubles matches for 2.5 points.

In coming action, RIC will travel to UMass-Boston for the Little East Conference Championships on May 3-4.

Men’s Golf

1-4

Head Coach John Fitta’s Anchormen are 1-4. RIC fell to Roger Williams 335-368 on Apr. 24, but picked up their first win of the spring with a 344-361 win over Johnson & Wales on Apr. 26.

Junior John Ginolfi (Warwick, RI) shot a 107 vs. Roger Williams and a 93 vs. Johnson & Wales.

Junior Joe Padykula (Seekonk, MA) shot an 87 vs. Roger Williams and an 84 vs. Johnson & Wales.

Sophomore Ken Ferrara (North Providence, RI) shot an 85 vs. Roger Williams and an 82 vs. Johnson & Wales. Ferrara was the top medallist vs. Johnson & Wales.

Sophomore Brian Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) shot an 89 vs. Roger Williams and an 85 vs. Johnson & Wales.

In upcoming action, RIC will compete at Salve Regina on May 3.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Head Coach Kevin Jackson’s Anchormen competed at the Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships, hosted by Westfield State on Apr. 27. The Anchormen finished tied for eighth (ten teams) with 18 points for the meet and were fourth (five teams) in the Little East.

Junior Brian Carney (Barrington, RI) placed 15th in the 400 meters with a time off 1:03.44 and 19th in the long jump with a distance of 14’03.00".

Junior Mike Daniels (Warwick, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the 800 meters, placing fourth with a time of 1:58.33. Daniels also placed 20th in the javelin with a distance of 123’0.2".

Junior James Giammarco (Southington, CT) placed 25th in the javelin with a distance of 105’03.20".

Junior Charm Howie (Providence, RI) placed seventh in the 200 meters with a time of 52.65 and tenth in the 400 meters with a time of 24.06.

Sophomore Charles Kuti (Providence, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the 100 meters, placing sixth with a time of 11.86. Kuti also placed 11th in the 200 meters with a time of 24.24 and 12th in the long jump with a distance of 17’9.75".

Junior Tim Rudd (Warwick, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the 1,500 meters, placing third with a time of 4:05.34. Rudd also placed 12th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:04.26

Sophomore Joe Giardina (West Warwick, RI) placed 24th in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:02.29.

Sophomore Jeremy Meyer (Miami, FL) placed 14th in the 400 meters with a time 59.54.

Sophomore James Peluso (Johnston, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the pole vault, placing fourth with a height of 11’00.00".

Freshman German Cardona (Pawtucket, RI) placed 13th in the 100 meters with a time of 12.16 and 19th in the 200 meters with a time of 25.18.

Freshman Matt Faria (Seekonk, MA) placed 18th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:07.86.

Freshman Ruben Feliz (Providence, RI) placed 40th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:04.71.

Freshman Chris Fernandes (Cumberland, RI) placed seventh in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.07.

Freshman Charles Hewes (East Hampton, CT) placed ninth in the shot with a distance of 37’10.50" and 23rd in the discus with a distance of 87’10.25".

Freshman Joe Parenteau (Smithfield, RI) placed seventh in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:10.14 and place 19th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:08.46.

In upcoming action, RIC will compete at the New England Division III Championships on May 4.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Head Coach Kevin Jackson’s Anchorwomen competed at the Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships, hosted by Westfield State on Apr. 27. The Anchorwomen finished fifth (nine teams) overall with 49 points and third (five teams) in the Little East.

Senior Crisolita da Cruz (Providence, RI) placed eighth in the hammer with a distance of 121’9" and 14th in the discus with a distance of 81’5".

Senior Joyelle Galli (Exeter, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in both the triple and long jump, placing third with a distance of 32’9.75" in the triple and fifth with a distance of 14’9.25" in the long. Galli also placed ninth in the 100 meters with a time of 14.15.

Junior Michele Dunphy (Cranston, RI) placed 14th in the 1500 meters with a time of 5:36.40.

Junior Leslie Eastwood (East Providence, RI) placed 11th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:41.02.

Junior Joanne Pora (Attleboro, MA) placed ninth in the javelin with a distance of 98’2.50", 12th in the shot with a distance of 28’1.75" and 15th in the hammer with a distance of 102’09.70"

Sophomore Michelle Boudreau (Lincoln, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the 10,000 meters, placing third with a time of 43:24.21.

Freshman Shari Fenton (West Warwick, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the hammer, placing sixth with a distance of 127’02.70". Fenton also placed 11th in the shot with a distance of 29’01.75".

Freshman Courtney Gardiner (Warwick, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the triple jump, placing fourth with a distance of 32’07.50".

Freshman Jessica Leonard (Warwick, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the hammer, placing fourth with a distance of 136’06.00". Leonard also placed 16th in both the shot and the discus with distances of 25’05.00" and 78’09.50" respectively.

Freshman Rolanda Mangum (Providence, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the hammer, placing first with a distance of 151’00.70". Mangum also placed 18th in the discus with a distance of 76’08.25" Mangum is a NCAA Provisional Qualifier in the hammer.

Freshman Katherine McCalligett (Warwick, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in both the 200 meters and 400 meters, placing first in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.45 and third in the 200 meters with a time of 27.32.

In upcoming action, RIC will compete at the New England Division III Championships on May 4.
