Rhode Island College Fall Sports Update #2

Men’s Soccer
(1-4-1 Overall, 0-0 in the Little East)

Providence, RI—Head Coach Len Mercurio’s team is 1-4-1 overall and has yet to see action in the Little East Conference. The squad posted a 3-0 loss to Rivier on Sept. 11, a 2-2 tie at Worcester State on Sept. 13 and a 2-1 loss at MIT on Sept. 15.

Junior forward Scott Main (Exeter, RI) has played in six games, starting all of them. He has five goals and one assist for eleven points on the season. Main has one game-winning goal to his credit.

Freshman defender Mike Maciel (East Providence, RI) has played in six games, starting five of them. Maciel has two goals for four points.

Freshman midfielder German Cardona (Pawtucket, RI) has played in five games, starting three of them. He has one goal for two points.

Senior midfielder Pete Ceprano (Hope, RI) has played in six games, starting five of them. He has one assist for one point.

Sophomore midfielder Brian Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) has played in six games, starting four of them. He has one assist for one point.

Senior goalkeeper Carlos Pinhancos (Cumberland, RI) has played in six games, starting all of them. He owns a 2.06 goals-against average, a .733 save percentage and has made 33 saves on the season. Pinhancos has logged 525 minutes.

Freshman goalkeeper Jason Nelson (Pascoag, RI) has logged 15 minutes with a 0.00 goals-against average, a 1.000 save percentage and has made two saves on the season.

Sophomore Joe Burns (Ashaway, RI) and freshman Christopher Furey (Cabot, VT) are reserve goalkeepers on the team. Furey is still recovering from a broken hand he suffered over the summer.

Junior sweeper James Williamson (North Kingstown, RI) has played in six games, starting all of them. He scored his first goal of the season during the Anchormen’s overtime tie with Worcester State on September 13, earning two points on the season.

Sophomore stopper Josh Nelson (Pascoag, RI) has played in six games, starting all of them. He assisted Maciel’s goal against MIT on September 15, earning one point on the season.

Junior forward Abdou Sidibe (Providence, RI) has played in two games, starting both of them. Sophomore forward Craig Bannon (Harrisville, RI) has played in six games, starting all of them.

Senior midfielder Alex Gracia (West Warwick, RI) has played in two games, coming back from a leg injury to begin his season against Worcester State on September 13. Senior midfielder Ivo Luis (East Providence, RI) has played in six games, starting all of them. Sophomore midfielder Johan Calderon (Pawtucket, RI) has played in six games, starting four of them. He earned his first point of the season with an assist in the Worcester State game on September 13.

Junior defender Rob Williamson (Greenville, RI) has played in three games, starting all of them. Junior defender Christopher Enright (Barrington, RI) has played in four games. Freshman defender Matthew Lambert (Woonsocket, RI) has played in two games. Freshman back Nathaniel Gaye (Accra, GHANA) has played in five games, starting one.

In upcoming action, RIC will travel to Roger Williams on Sept. 18 and will host Salem State in the season’s first home contest on Sept. 20. The Anchormen’s first crack at Little East Conference competition in the 2001 campaign will be on Sept. 22 at Southern Maine.

 

Women’s Soccer
(2-1-2 Overall, 0-0-1 in the Little East)

Head Coach Nicole Barber’s team is 2-1-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the Little East Conference. RIC earned its second win of the season, a 3-2 victory over Worcester State, at home on Sept. 13. The Anchorwomen stopped Eastern Connecticut’s five-game winning streak and picked up another tie (2-2) in their first LEC contest on Sept. 15.

Senior forward Kerri Ferreira (Bristol, RI) has played in four games, starting all of them. She has three goals for six points. She has one game-winning goal, earned in the Sept. 13 game against Worcester State.

Freshman defender Melissa Skodras (Warwick, RI) has played in five games, starting all of them. She has one goal for two points.

Freshman midfielder Alexis Bouchard (Warren, RI) has played in five games, starting all of them. She has one goal and one assist for three points.

Freshman forward/midfielder Elena Sanborn (North Scituate, RI) has played in five games, starting all of them.

Freshman goalkeeper Melissa Carpentier (Woonsocket, RI) has played in five games, starting all of them. She owns a 0.97 goals-against average, a .921 save percentage and has made 59 saves on the season. Carpentier earned the shutout against Oswego State and has played 465 minutes.

Freshman goalkeeper/midfielder Jamie Hinman (Burlington, CT) has played in five games, one of which was in net. She owns a 0.00 goals-against average, a 1.000 save percentage and has made four saves in 45 minutes of action. She scored her first collegiate goal against Eastern Connecticut on Sept. 15. She has one goal for two points on the season.

Senior forward/midfielder Caitlin Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) has played in five games, starting all of them. She has two assists for two points on the season. Sophomore forward/midfielder Ololade Falola (Coventry, RI) has played in five games, starting one of them. She earned her first goal of the season against Worcester State on Sept. 13, racking up two points on the season. Senior forward Rena Rossi (Cranston, RI) and sophomore Audrey Hinman (Burlington, CT) are reserves.

Junior midfielder Allison Vales (Bristol, RI) has played in five games, starting all of them. She has one assist for one point on the season. Sophomore midfielder/defender Kim Wood (Little Compton, RI) has played in five games, starting all of them. Freshman midfielder/forward Laura Steere (Pascoag, RI) has played in five games. Freshman midfielder/forward Sadie Beaudet (Chepachet, RI) has played in three games, starting all of them.

Sophomore defender Malissa Holden (Warwick, RI) has played in five games, starting all of them. Sophomore defender/midfielder Kristen Pellerin (Cumberland, RI) has played in five games, starting all of them. Freshman defender Courtney Gardiner (Warwick, RI) has in played five games. Freshman defender Kristine Boyko (Blackstone, MA) has played in one game.

In upcoming Little East Conference action, RIC will travel to UMASS-Dartmouth on Sept. 18 and host Southern Maine on Sept. 22.

Women’s Tennis
(3-1 Overall, 1-0 in the Little East)

Head Coach Dick Ernst’s team is 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the Little East Conference. RIC suffered a 7-2 loss to Johnson and Wales University on Sept. 10 before racking up two consecutive wins. The Anchorwomen posted a 9-0 shutout over Newbury on Sept. 12 and clawed out a 5-4 victory over Plymouth State on Sept. 15.

Senior co-captain Cynthia Murray (Brooklyn, CT) is 2-2 (.500) at number one singles and 4-0 (1.000) at number one doubles for 4.0 points on the season. Murray is first in all-time career points at RIC and is RIC’s all-time leader in career doubles victories. She needs three singles wins to take over first in that category as well.

Junior Carminda Rocha (East Providence, RI) was named the Little East Conference’s Player of the Week for her performance in three matches. She was 3-0 at number two singles and 3-0 at number two doubles in a 2-1 week for the Anchorwomen. She was the only member of the team to earn a singles win vs. Johnson and Wales. Rocha is 4-0 (1.000) at number two singles and 4-0 (1.000) at number one doubles for 6.0 points on the season.

Junior Donna Vongratsavay (North Providence, RI) is 2-2 (.500) at number three singles and 1-3 (.250) at number two doubles for 2.5 points on the season.

Sophomore Samantha Hedden (Rumford, RI) is 1-3 (.250) at number four singles and 1-3 (.250) at number three doubles for 1.5 points on the season.

Freshman Meghan Mooney (North Scituate, RI) is 3-1 (.750) at number five singles and 2-2 (.500) at number two doubles for 4.0 points on the season.

Senior co-captain Courtney Chauvette (West Warwick, RI) is 2-2 (.500) at number six singles and 2-2 (.500) at number three doubles for 3.0 points on the season.

Junior Sara Hebert (Cumberland, RI), junior Beth Lardaro (Peace Dale, RI), sophomore Amy Lancellotta (West Warwick, RI) and sophomore Kristin Mandsager (Portsmouth, RI) have yet to see action this fall.

In upcoming action, RIC will travel to Wentworth on Sept. 17 and host Bryant on Sept. 19. The Anchorwomen will next see Little East action when they host Southern Maine on Sept. 21.

Women’s Volleyball
(2-6 Overall, 1-2 in the Little East)

Head Coach Kristen Norberg’s team is 2-6 overall and 1-2 in the Little East Conference. RIC recorded a 3-1 win at WPI on Sept. 12. While hosting a Little East Round Robin Tournament, the squad’s first look at Little East competition this season, RIC lost to Eastern Connecticut (3-0) on Sept. 14, lost to UMASS-Dartmouth (3-0) on Sept. 15, and picked up a victory (3-1) over UMASS-Boston on Sept. 15.

Senior middle hitter Brandee Trainer (North Kingstown, RI) was named to the LEC’s Weekly Honor Roll for her performance last week. For the season, Trainer has played in 25 games in seven matches. She has 63 kills (2.520/game), a .282 hitting percentage, 3 assists (0.120/game), 11 service aces (0.440/game), 61 digs (2.440/game) and 24 blocks (0.960/game).

Senior middle hitter Erica Waltonen (West Greenwich, RI) has played in 31 games in eight matches. She has 66 kills (2.129 /game), a .186 hitting percentage, ten assists (0.323/game), six service aces (0.194/game), 86 digs (2.774/game) and 22 blocks (0.710/game).

Senior setter Kim Lebrun (Woonsocket, RI) has played in 31 games in eight matches. She has 33 kills (1.065/game), a .209 hitting percentage, 81 assists (2.613/game), three service aces (0.097/game), 43 digs (1.387 /game) and ten blocks (0.323/game).

Junior outside hitter Stephanie Callaghan (Warwick, RI) has played in 31 games in eight matches. She has 39 kills (1.258 /game), a .182 hitting percentage, nine assists (0.290/game), seven service aces (0.226/game), 68 digs (2.194 /game) and three blocks (0.097/game).

Sophomore outside hitter Vicky Bilalyan (Cranston, RI) has played in 26 games in eight matches. She has 20 kills (0.769/game), a .139 hitting percentage, no assists (0.000/game), one service ace (0.038/game), 28 digs (1.077 /game) and eight blocks (0.308/game).

Junior setter Susan Chiu (Belmont, NH) has played in 22 games in eight matches. She has one kill (0.045/game), a .000 hitting percentage, 20 assists (1.429/game), four service aces (0.182/game), 49 digs (2.227/game) and no blocks (0.000/game).

Sophomore outside hitter Erica Poirier (Woonsocket, RI) has played in eight games in three matches. She has six kills (0.750/game), a .071 hitting percentage, one assist (0.125/game), no service aces (0.000/game), no digs (0.000 /game) and two blocks (0.250/game).

Freshman hitter Kristen Bibeault (Woonsocket, RI) has played in 24 games in eight matches. She has 20 kills (0.833/game), a .099 hitting percentage, two assists (0.083/game), one service ace (0.042/game), 37 digs (1.542/game) and four blocks (0.167/game).

Sophomore defender Jennifer Cyr (Bristol, RI) has played in 11 games in five matches. She has no kills (0.000/game), a .000 hitting percentage, no assists (0.000/game), no service aces (0.000/game), ten digs (.909 /game) and no blocks (0.000/game).

Freshman defender/setter Katherine Darash (Port Chester, NY) has played in three games in two matches. She has no kills (0.000/game), a .000 hitting percentage, no assists (0.000/game), no service aces (0.000/game), one dig (0.333/game) and no blocks (0.000/game).

In upcoming action, RIC will host Wesleyan on Sept. 18 and play at the Amherst College Invitational on Sept. 21 and 22.

 

Men’s Cross Country

Head Coach Dick Hoppman’s team took part in the UMASS-Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 15. The Anchormen placed 20th, out of 26 teams, with a score of 597.

Junior Tim Rudd (Warwick, RI) placed 63rd (191 competitors) with a time of 27:06.13

Junior Mike Daniels (Warwick, RI) placed 120th with a time of 28:36.53.

Freshman Ruben Feliz (Providence, RI) placed 132nd with a time of 29:19.07.

Senior co-captain Nick Alfred (Wakefield, RI) placed 158th with a time of 31:24.17.

Junior co-captain Chris Puleo (Barrington, RI) placed 161st with a time of 32:17.86.

Sophomore John Charest (North Smithfield, RI) placed 167th with a time of 32:39.36.

Junior Rob Geremia (Kingston, RI ) placed 175th with a time of 34:34.13.

In upcoming action, RIC will host the Ray Dwyer Invitational, held at Goddard Park in Warwick, on Sept. 22.

 

Women’s Cross Country

Head Coach Matt Hird’s team took part in the UMASS-Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 15. RIC did not enter a full scoring squad.

Sophomore Michelle Boudreau (Lincoln, RI) placed 116th (226 competitors) with a time of 20:55.59.

Sophomore captain Michele Dunphy (Cranston, RI) placed 164th with a time of 22:43.01.

Sophomore Rebecca Horton (Seekonk, MA) placed 174th with a time of 23:31.30.

Sophomore Leslie Eastwood (East Providence, RI) placed 179th with a time of 23:40.45.

In upcoming action, RIC will host the Ray Dwyer Invitational, held at Goddard Park in Warwick, on Sept. 22.
