Rhode Island College Fall Sports Update #3

Men’s Soccer
(1-6-2 Overall, 0-0-1 in the Little East)

Providence, RI—Head Coach Len Mercurio’s team is 1-6-2 overall and is 0-0-1 in the Little East Conference. The squad posted a 1-0 loss at Roger Williams on Sept. 18, a 1-0 loss in overtime to Salem State on Sept. 13 and a battled to a 0-0 overtime tie at Southern Maine, the Anchormen’s first conference opponent this season, on Sept. 22.

Junior forward Scott Main (Exeter, RI) has played in nine games, starting all of them. He has five goals and one assist for eleven points on the season. Main has one game-winning goal to his credit.

Freshman defender Mike Maciel (East Providence, RI) has played in nine games, starting eight of them. Maciel has two goals for four points.

Freshman midfielder German Cardona (Pawtucket, RI) has played in six games, starting three of them. He has one goal for two points.

Senior midfielder Pete Ceprano (Hope, RI) has played in nine games, starting eight of them. He has one assist for one point.

Sophomore midfielder Brian Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) has played in nine games, starting seven of them. He has one assist for one point.

Senior goalkeeper Carlos Pinhancos (Cumberland, RI) has played in nine games, starting all of them. He owns a 1.51 goals-against average, a .774 save percentage and has made 48 saves on the season. Pinhancos has logged 835 minutes.

Freshman goalkeeper Jason Nelson (Pascoag, RI) has logged 15 minutes with a 0.00 goals-against average, a 1.000 save percentage and has made two saves on the season. As a midifelder, Nelson has played in one game.

Sophomore Joe Burns (Ashaway, RI) and freshman Christopher Furey (Cabot, VT) are reserve goalkeepers on the team. Furey is still recovering from a broken hand he suffered over the summer.

Junior sweeper James Williamson (North Kingstown, RI) has played in nine games, starting all of them. He has scored one goal for one point on the season.

Sophomore stopper Josh Nelson (Pascoag, RI) has played in nine games, starting all of them. He has one assist for one point on the season.

Sophomore forward Craig Bannon (Harrisville, RI) has played in nine games, starting eight of them.

Senior midfielder Alex Gracia (West Warwick, RI) has played in four games. Senior midfielder Ivo Luis (East Providence, RI) has played in nine games, starting all of them. Sophomore midfielder Johan Calderon (Pawtucket, RI) has played in eight games, starting six of them. He has two assists for two points. Freshman midfielder Radivoje Nedeljkovic (Belgrade, YUGOSLAVIA), a late addition to the team, has played in two games.

Junior defender Rob Williamson (Greenville, RI) has played in three games, starting all of them. Junior defender Christopher Enright (Barrington, RI) has played in five games. Freshman defender Matthew Lambert (Woonsocket, RI) has played in three games, starting one of them. Freshman back Nathaniel Gaye (Accra, GHANA) has played in eight games, starting two of them.

In upcoming action, RIC will host LEC opponent UMASS-Boston on Sept. 29 at 1 p.m.

 

Women’s Soccer
(4-1-2 Overall, 2-0-1 in the Little East)

Head Coach Nicole Barber’s team is 4-1-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the Little East Conference. RIC added two more conference wins to its record this past week, both of which were shutouts. RIC defeated UMASS-Dartmouth on the road, 3-0, on Sept. 18 and Southern Maine at home, 2-0, on Sept. 22. The Anchorwomen have had four shutouts in seven games so far this season.

Freshman midfielder Alexis Bouchard (Warren, RI) has played in seven games, starting all of them. She has four goals and one assist for nine points. She has one game-winning goal to her credit.

Senior forward Kerri Ferreira (Bristol, RI) has played in six games, starting all of them. She has three goals and two assists for eight points. She has one game-winning goal to her credit.

Freshman defender Melissa Skodras (Warwick, RI) has played in seven games, starting all of them. She has one goal, a game-winner, for two points.

Freshman forward/midfielder Elena Sanborn (North Scituate, RI) has played in seven games, starting all of them. She has one goal, a game winner, for two points. She scored her first collegiate goal against Southern Maine on Sept. 22.

Freshman goalkeeper Melissa Carpentier (Woonsocket, RI) was named the Little East Conference’s Co-Rookie of the Week. She posted two shutouts last week over LEC rivals UMASS-Dartmouth and Southern Maine. She has played in seven games, starting all of them. She owns a 0.70 goals-against average, a .932 save percentage and has made 69 saves on the season. Carpentier has earned three shutouts and has played 645 minutes.

Freshman goalkeeper/midfielder Jamie Hinman (Burlington, CT) has played in seven games, one of which was in net. She owns a 0.00 goals-against average, a 1.000 save percentage and has made four saves in 45 minutes of action. In the field, she has two goals and one assist for five points on the season.

Senior forward/midfielder Caitlin Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) has played in seven games, starting all of them. She has two assists for two points on the season. Sophomore forward/midfielder Ololade Falola (Coventry, RI) has played in seven games, starting two of them. She has scored one goal for two points on the season. Sophomore Audrey Hinman (Burlington, CT) has played in one game. Senior forward Rena Rossi (Cranston, RI) is a reserve.

Junior midfielder Allison Vales (Bristol, RI) has played in seven games, starting all of them. She has one assist for one point on the season. Sophomore midfielder/defender Kim Wood (Little Compton, RI) has played in seven games, starting all of them. Freshman midfielder/forward Laura Steere (Pascoag, RI) has played in seven games. Freshman midfielder/forward Sadie Beaudet (Chepachet, RI) has played in seven games, starting six of them. She has scored two goals for four points.

Sophomore defender Malissa Holden (Warwick, RI) has played in seven games, starting all of them. Sophomore defender/midfielder Kristen Pellerin (Cumberland, RI) has played in seven games, starting five of them. Freshman defender Courtney Gardiner (Warwick, RI) has played in seven games, starting two of them. Freshman defender Kristine Boyko (Blackstone, MA) has played in two games.

In upcoming action, RIC will travel to Bridgewater State College on Sept. 25 and face LEC foe UMASS-Boston on Sept. 29.

Women’s Tennis
(5-1 Overall, 1-0 in the Little East)

Head Coach Dick Ernst’s team is 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the Little East Conference. RIC picked up two more non-league wins this past week, blanking Wentworth (9-0) on the road on Sept. 17 and defeating Bryant (7-2) at home on Sept. 19. Due to the weather, the Anchorwomen’s match against Southern Maine on Sept. 22 was suspended. RIC will resume play against the Huskies at home on Sept. 28.

Senior co-captain Cynthia Murray (Brooklyn, CT) is 4-2 (.666) at number one singles and 6-0 (1.000) at number one doubles for 7.0 points on the season. Murray is first in all-time career points at RIC and is RIC’s all-time leader in career doubles victories as well. She is currently tied as RIC’s all-time singles record, needing just one more win to break that record.

Junior Carminda Rocha (East Providence, RI) is undefeated in both singles and doubles so far this season. She is 6-0 (1.000) at number two singles and 6-0 (1.000) at number one doubles for a team high 9.0 points on the season.

Junior Donna Vongratsavay (North Providence, RI) is 4-2 (.666) at number three singles and 3-3 (.500) at number two doubles for 5.5 points on the season.

Sophomore Samantha Hedden (Rumford, RI) is 3-3 (.500) at number four singles and 2-4 (.333) at number three doubles for 4.0 points on the season.

Freshman Meghan Mooney (North Scituate, RI) was named the Little East Conference’s Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, going unbeaten in a 2-0 week for the Anchorwomen. Mooney is 5-1 (.833) at number five singles and 4-2 (.666) at number two doubles for 7.0 points on the season.

Senior co-captain Courtney Chauvette (West Warwick, RI) is 3-3 (.500) at number six singles and 3-3 (.500) at number three doubles for 4.5 points on the season.

Junior Sara Hebert (Cumberland, RI), junior Beth Lardaro (Peace Dale, RI), sophomore Amy Lancellotta (West Warwick, RI) and sophomore Kristin Mandsager (Portsmouth, RI) have yet to see action this fall.

In upcoming action, RIC will host Bridgewater State on Sept. 24, travel to Western Connecticut on Sept. 26, host rescheduled Southern Maine on Sept. 28 and travel to UMASS-Dartmouth on Sept. 29.

Women’s Volleyball
(2-11 Overall, 1-2 in the Little East)

Head Coach Kristen Norberg’s team is 2-11 overall and 1-2 in the Little East Conference. RIC has lost its last four matches. Wesleyan shut out the Anchorwomen 3-0 at home on Sept. 18. RIC traveled to the Amherst Invitational, where they were shut out by Amherst and Gordon on Sept. 21 and Plymouth State on Sept. 22. The Anchorwomen lost 3-1 to St. Lawrence on Sept. 22 to close out the tourney.

Senior middle hitter Brandee Trainer (North Kingstown, RI) has played in 41 games in 12 matches. She has 91 kills (2.220/game), a .228 hitting percentage, 4 assists (0.098/game), 16 service aces (0.390/game), 73 digs (1.780/game) and 40 blocks (0.976/game).

Senior middle hitter Erica Waltonen (West Greenwich, RI) has played in 47 games in 13 matches. She has 95 kills (2.021 /game), a .184 hitting percentage, ten assists (0.213/game), 17 service aces (0.362/game), 105 digs (2.234/game) and 26 blocks (0.553/game).

Senior setter Kim Lebrun (Woonsocket, RI) has played in 47 games in 13 matches. She has 43 kills (.915/game), a .172 hitting percentage, 136 assists (2.894/game), eight service aces (0.170 /game), 68 digs (1.447/game) and 12 blocks (0.255/game).

Junior outside hitter Stephanie Callaghan (Warwick, RI) has played in 43 games in 12 matches. She has 56 kills (1.302/game), a .187 hitting percentage, nine assists (0.209/game), seven service aces (0.163/game), 80 digs (1.860/game) and seven blocks (0.163/game).

Men’s Cross Country

Head Coach Dick Hoppman’s team hosted the annual Rhode Island College Ray Dwyer Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 22 at Goddard Park in Warwick. The Anchormen placed fifth, out of seven teams, with a score of 108. Bridgewater State College won the meet with 36 points.

Junior Tim Rudd (Warwick, RI) placed fourth (71 competitors) with a time of 28:15.

Freshman Joe Parenteau (Smithfield, RI) placed 16th with a time of 29:06.

Freshman Ruben Feliz (Providence, RI) placed 27th with a time of 30:20.

Junior Mike Daniels (Warwick, RI) placed 32nd with a time of 30:34.

Senior co-captain Nick Alfred (Wakefield, RI) placed 42nd with a time of 32:08.

Sophomore John Charest (North Smithfield, RI) placed 52nd with a time of 33:39.

Junior co-captain Chris Puleo (Barrington, RI) placed 55th with a time of 34:09.

Sophomore Joe Giardina (West Warwick, RI) placed 56th with a time of 34:18.

Junior Rob Geremia (Kingston, RI ) placed 65th with a time of 36:22.

Junior Brian Carney (Barrington, RI) placed 70th with a time of 42:46.

In upcoming action, RIC will run at the Tri-State Championships, hosted by the Community College of Rhode Island on Sept. 29.

Women’s Cross Country

Head Coach Matt Hird’s team hosted the annual Rhode Island College Ray Dwyer Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 22 at Goddard Park in Warwick. RIC did not enter a full scoring squad. Wellesley College won the meet with 38 points.

Sophomore Michelle Boudreau (Lincoln, RI) placed 26th (87 competitors) with a time of 21:52.

Sophomore Rebecca Horton (Seekonk, MA) placed 61st with a time of 24:31.

Sophomore Leslie Eastwood (East Providence, RI) placed 70th with a time of 25:09.

Sophomore captain Michele Dunphy (Cranston, RI) placed 71st with a time of 25:22.

In upcoming action, RIC will run at the Tri-State Championships, hosted by the Community College of Rhode Island on Sept. 29.
