Rhode Island College Fall Sports Update #5

Men’s Soccer
(2-8-2 Overall, 1-1-1 in the Little East)

Providence, RI—Head Coach Len Mercurio’s team is 2-8-2 overall and is 1-1-1 in the Little East Conference. This past week the Anchormen dropped two games, losing to Connecticut College 2-0 on Oct. 3 and losing to LEC foe UMASS-Dartmouth 1-0 on Oct. 6.

Junior forward Scott Main (Exeter, RI) has played in 12 games, starting all of them. He has six goals and two assists for 14 points on the season. Main has one game-winning goal to his credit.

Freshman defender Mike Maciel (East Providence, RI) has played in nine games, starting eight of them. Maciel has two goals for four points.

Senior midfielder Pete Ceprano (Hope, RI) has played in 12 games, starting 11 of them. He has one assist for one point.

Sophomore midfielder Brian Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) has played in 11 games, starting eight of them. He has one  game-winning goal and two assists for four points.

Senior goalkeeper Carlos Pinhancos (Cumberland, RI) has played in 12 games, starting all of them. He owns a 1.38 goals-against average, a .788 save percentage and has made 67 saves on the season. Pinhancos has logged 1,105 minutes and has two shutouts.

Freshman midfielder Jason Nelson (Pascoag, RI) has played in four games. As a goalkeeper, Nelson has logged 15 minutes with a 0.00 goals-against average, a 1.000 save percentage and has made two saves on the season.

Sophomore Joe Burns (Ashaway, RI) and freshman Christopher Furey (Cabot, VT) are reserve goalkeepers on the team. Furey is still recovering from a broken hand he suffered over the summer.

Junior sweeper James Williamson (North Kingstown, RI) has played in 12 games, starting all of them. He has two goals and one assist for five points on the season.

Sophomore stopper Josh Nelson (Pascoag, RI) has played in 12 games, starting all of them. He has one assist for one point on the season.

Sophomore forward Craig Bannon (Harrisville, RI) has played in ten games, starting eight of them.

Freshman midfielder German Cardona (Pawtucket, RI) has played in nine games, starting eight of them. He has one goal for two points. Senior midfielder Alex Gracia (West Warwick, RI) has played in seven games. Senior midfielder Ivo Luis (East Providence, RI) has played in 12 games, starting all of them. He has one goal and one assist for three points. Sophomore midfielder Johan Calderon (Pawtucket, RI) has played in 11 games, starting nine of them. He has two assists for two points. Freshman midfielder Radivoje Nedeljkovic (Belgrade, YUGOSLAVIA) has played in three games.

Junior defender Rob Williamson (Greenville, RI), who is out with a broken hand, has played in three games, starting all of them. Junior defender Christopher Enright (Barrington, RI) has played in seven games. Freshman defender Matthew Lambert (Woonsocket, RI) has played in six games, starting four of them. Freshman back Nathaniel Gaye (Accra, GHANA) has played in 11 games, starting five of them.

In upcoming action, RIC will host Bridgewater State on Oct. 10 at 3:30 p.m. and LEC rival Keene State on Oct. 13 at 1 p.m.

 

Women’s Soccer
(6-2-2 Overall, 3-0-1 in the Little East)

Head Coach Nicole Barber’s team is 6-2-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the Little East Conference. The Anchorwomen played two non-league games on the road this past week, losing to Framingham State 2-1 on Oct. 2, before defeating Bay Path 4-2 on Oct. 4.

Senior forward Kerri Ferreira (Bristol, RI) has played in nine games, starting all of them. She has seven goals and six assists for 20 points. She has two game-winning goals to her credit.

Freshman midfielder Alexis Bouchard (Warren, RI) has played in ten games, starting all of them. She has six goals and two assists for 14 points. She has two game-winning goals to her credit. Bouchard scored two goals in the Anchorwomen’s 4-2 victory over Bay Path on Oct. 4.

Senior forward/midfielder Caitlin Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) has played in nine games, starting all of them.  She has two goals and four assists for eight points on the season.

Freshman defender Melissa Skodras (Warwick, RI) has played in ten games, starting nine of them. She has two goals, one of which was a game-winner, and an assist for five points

Freshman forward/midfielder Elena Sanborn (North Scituate, RI) has played in ten games, starting all of them. She has one goal, a game-winner, for two points. 

Freshman goalkeeper Melissa Carpentier (Woonsocket, RI) has played in ten games, starting all of them. She owns a 0.89 goals-against average, a .913 save percentage and has made 95 saves on the season. Carpentier has earned four shutouts and has played 915 minutes.

Freshman goalkeeper/midfielder Jamie Hinman (Burlington, CT) has played in ten games, one of which was in net. She owns a 0.00 goals-against average, a 1.000 save percentage and has made four saves in 45 minutes of action. In the field, she has three goals and one assist for seven points on the season.

Senior forward Rena Rossi (Cranston, RI) has played in one game. She has scored one goal for two points on the season.

Sophomore forward/midfielder Ololade Falola (Coventry, RI) has played in nine games, starting three of them. She has one goal for two points on the season. Sophomore Audrey Hinman (Burlington, CT) has played in three games.

Junior midfielder Allison Vales (Bristol, RI) has played in ten games, starting all of them.  She has one goal and one assist for three points on the season. Sophomore midfielder/defender Kim Wood (Little Compton, RI) has played in ten games, starting all of them. She has one assist for one point on the season. Freshman midfielder/forward Laura Steere (Pascoag, RI) has played in ten games. She has two goals and one assist for five points on the season. Freshman midfielder/forward Sadie Beaudet (Chepachet, RI) has played in ten games, starting eight of them. She has three goals for six points.

Sophomore defender Malissa Holden (Warwick, RI) has played in ten games, starting all of them. She has one assist for one point. Sophomore defender/midfielder Kristen Pellerin (Cumberland, RI) has played in ten games, starting six of them. Freshman defender Courtney Gardiner (Warwick, RI) has played in ten games, starting five of them. Freshman defender Kristine Boyko (Blackstone, MA) has played in four games.

In upcoming action, RIC will host Roger Williams this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. and travel to Keene State on Oct. 13 for a 1 p.m. game.

 

Women’s Tennis
(10-3 Overall, 4-1 in the Little East)

Head Coach Dick Ernst’s team is 10-3 overall and 4-1 in the Little East Conference. RIC shut out Suffolk 9-0 at home on Oct. 2 before dropping a pair of matches this past week. The Anchorwomen fell to Roger Williams at home on Oct. 4 (5-4) and were defeated by an LEC opponent for the first time this season when UMASS-Boston defeated them 5-3 on Oct. 7.

Senior co-captain Cynthia Murray (Brooklyn, CT), RIC’s all-time leader in career points, singles wins and doubles wins, is 10-3 (.769) at number one singles and 11-2 (.846) at number one doubles for 15.5 points on the season.

Junior Carminda Rocha (East Providence, RI) is undefeated in singles so far this season. She is 12-0 (1.000) at number two singles and 11-1 (.917) at number one doubles for a team high 17.5 points on the season.

Junior Donna Vongratsavay (North Providence, RI) is 10-3 (.769) at number three singles and 9-3 (.750) at number two doubles for 14.5 points on the season.

Sophomore Samantha Hedden (Rumford, RI) is 5-8 (.385) at number four singles and 6-7 (.462) at number three doubles for 8.0 points on the season.

Freshman Meghan Mooney (North Scituate, RI) is 9-1 (.900) at number five singles and 7-2 (.777) at number two doubles for 12.5 points on the season.

Senior co-captain Courtney Chauvette (West Warwick, RI) is 7-5 (.583) at number six singles and 6-6 (.500) at number three doubles for 10.0 points on the season.

Sophomore Kristin Mandsager (Portsmouth, RI) is 3-1 (.750) in singles and 1-0 (1.000) in doubles for 3.5 points on the season. Sophomore Amy Lancellotta (West Warwick, RI) is 0-1 (.000) in singles and 1-1 (.500) in doubles for 0.5 points on the season.

Junior Sara Hebert (Cumberland, RI) and junior Beth Lardaro (Peace Dale, RI) have yet to see action this season.

In upcoming action, RIC will travel to Salem State on Oct. 10 and compete in the Little East Conference Championship on Oct. 13 and 14 at the University of Southern Maine.

 

Women’s Volleyball
(5-16 Overall, 1-4 in the Little East)

Head Coach Kristen Norberg’s team is 5-16 overall and 1-4 in the Little East Conference. The Anchorwomen dropped three matches last week, falling 3-1 to Keene State on Oct. 2, 3-0 to Clark on Oct. 4 and 3-1 to Eastern Nazarene on Oct. 6.

Senior middle hitter Brandee Trainer (North Kingstown, RI) has played in 69 games in 20 matches. She has 161 kills (2.333/game), a .220 hitting percentage, six assists (0.087/game), 30 service aces (0.435/game), 109 digs (1.580/game) and 60 blocks (0.870/game).

Senior middle hitter Erica Waltonen (West Greenwich, RI) has played in 75 games in 21 matches. She has 146 kills (1.947/game), a .181 hitting percentage, 13 assists (0.173/game), 33 service aces (0.440/game), 164 digs (2.187/game) and 39 blocks (0.520/game).

Senior setter Kim Lebrun (Woonsocket, RI) has played in 75 games in 21 matches. She has 51 kills (.680/game), a .145 hitting percentage, 260 assists (3.467/game), 21 service aces (0.280/game), 106 digs (1.413/game) and 15 blocks (0.200/game).

Junior outside hitter Stephanie Callaghan (Warwick, RI) has played in 71 games in 20 matches. She has 107 kills (1.507/game), a .207 hitting percentage, 12 assists (0.169/game), 15 service aces (0.211/game), 140 digs (1.972/game) and nine blocks (0.127/game).

Sophomore outside hitter Vicky Bilalyan (Cranston, RI) has played in 64 games in 21 matches. She has 58 kills (0.906/game), a .104 hitting percentage, one assist (0.016/game), two service aces (0.031/game), 49 digs (.766/game) and ten blocks (0.156/game).

Junior setter Susan Chiu (Belmont, NH) has played in 55 games in 21 matches. She has two kills (0.036/game), a .000 hitting percentage, 56 assists (1.018/game), nine service aces (0.164/game), 95 digs (1.727/game) and no blocks (0.000/game).

Sophomore outside hitter Erica Poirier (Woonsocket, RI) has played in 45 games in 15 matches. She has 34 kills (0.756/game), a .034 hitting percentage, 11 assists (0.244/game), no service aces (0.000/game), seven digs (0.156/game) and 16 blocks (0.356/game).

Freshman defender Julia Longo (Somersworth, NH) and freshman setter Corinne-Marie Gervais (Woonsocket, RI) are reserves on the team.

In upcoming action, RIC will compete at Suffolk on Oct. 10 and at the Tom Hay Invitational, hosted by Springfield College, on Oct. 13.

 

Men’s Cross Country

Head Coach Dick Hoppman’s team competed at the Bryant College Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 6. The Anchormen placed seventh, out of nine teams, with a score of 176. Merrimack College won the meet with 46 points.

Freshman Joe Parenteau (Smithfield, RI) placed 21st  (74 competitors) with a time of 30:24.

Junior Mike Daniels (Warwick, RI) placed 28th with a time of 31:28.

Senior co-captain Nick Alfred (Wakefield, RI) placed 43rd with a time of 32:31. Junior Rob Geremia (Kingston, RI) placed 44th with a time of 32:32.

Freshman Ruben Feliz (Providence, RI) placed 52nd with a time of 33:38. Sophomore John Charest (North Smithfield, RI) placed 65th with a time of 35:20.

Sophomore Joe Giardina (West Warwick, RI) placed 87th with a time of 35:31.

Junior co-captain Chris Puleo (Barrington, RI) placed 71st with a time of 38:46.

Junior Brian Carney (Barrington, RI) placed 73rd with a time of 41:10.

In upcoming action, RIC will run at the James Early Invitational at Westfield State on Oct. 13.

 

Women’s Cross Country

Head Coach Matt Hird’s team competed at the Bryant College Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 6. RIC did not enter a full scoring squad. Stonehill College won the meet with 27 points.

Sophomore Michelle Boudreau (Lincoln, RI) placed 36th (83 competitors) with a time of 22:44.

Sophomore Rebecca Horton (Seekonk, MA) placed 59th with a time of 24:22.

Sophomore captain Michele Dunphy (Cranston, RI) placed 62nd with a time of 24:40.

Sophomore Leslie Eastwood (East Providence, RI) placed 65th with a time of 25:15. In upcoming action, RIC will run at the James Early Invitational at Westfield State on Oct. 13.

 

Fall Men’s Golf
(0-10 Overall)

Head Coach John Fitta’s team is currently 0-10. The Anchormen finished fifth in a five-team match with Babson, Bentley and WPI at UMASS-Dartmouth on Oct. 1. RIC shot a 350. UMD finished with a score of 305, Babson was a close second at 307, Bentley scored 329 and WPI logged a score of 338.

Sophomore Neil Buffery (Warwick, RI) is averaging a team-best score of 84.3 in three meets. He shot a season-low, team-low, score of 83 at the UMD meet on Oct. 1.

Junior Joseph Padykula (Seekonk, MA) is averaging a score of 90.3 through the team’s first four meets. Padykula shot a season-low score of 85 in the Sept. 28 match vs. UMASS-Dartmouth, and Salve Regina.

Junior Jeff Slinn (Warwick, RI) is averaging a score of 93.3 through the team’s first four meets. Slinn recorded a season-low score of 90 at the UMD meet on Oct. 1.

Freshman Matt DeThomas (Woonsocket, RI) is averaging a score of 99.0 through two meets. DeThomas shot a season-low score of 91 at the UMD meet on Oct. 1.

Sophomore Ken Ferrara (North Providence, RI) is averaging a score of 85.0 through two meets. He shot a season-low score of 84 vs. Johnson and Wales on Sept. 14.

Junior John Ginolfi (Warwick, RI) is averaging a score of 88.0  through two meets. Ginolfi shot a season-low score of 86 in the Sept. 19 match vs. UMASS-Dartmouth, Worcester State and Babson.

Sophomore Justin Maguire (Warwick, RI) shot a score of 110 vs. Johnson and Wales on Sept. 14.
