Rhode Island College Women’s Tennis
Captures Little East Crown

Providence, RI—The Rhode Island College women’s tennis team captured the 2001 Little East Conference Tennis Championship, hosted by the University of Southern Maine, on Oct. 12-13. RIC placed first with 20 points, UMASS-Boston placed second with 18 points, USM was third with 10.0 points, UMASS-Dartmouth placed fourth with 6.5 points, Plymouth State placed fifth with 6.0 points and Western Connecticut placed sixth with 2.0 points.

It is the second LEC crown in the past three years for the Anchorwomen. It is the fourth LEC women’s title for RIC Head Coach Dick Ernst, who won previously in 1994, 1995 and 1999.

Junior Carminda Rocha (East Providence, RI) was the LEC Champion at number two singles. Rocha has been an LEC Champion in each of her three seasons at RIC, taking the LEC crown at number four singles in 1999 and 2000. So far this fall, Rocha is undefeated in singles. She is 15-0 (1.000) at number two singles and 13-2 (.867) at number one doubles for a team high 21.5 points on the season.

Sophomore Samantha Hedden (Rumford, RI) was the LEC Champion at number four singles. Hedden won three matches at the ’01 LEC Championships. She is 9-8 (.529) at number four singles and 8-8 (.500) at number three doubles for 13.0 points on the season.

Freshman Meghan Mooney (North Scituate, RI) was the LEC Champion at number five singles and number two doubles. Mooney is 12-1 (.923) at number five singles and 10-2 (.833) at number two doubles for 17.0 points on the season.

Junior Donna Vongratsavay (North Providence, RI) was the LEC Champion, with Mooney, at number two doubles. Vongratsavay is 12-4 (.750) at number three singles and 12-3 (.800) at number two doubles for 18.0 points on the season.

Senior co-captain Cynthia Murray (Brooklyn, CT), RIC’s all-time leader in career points, singles wins and doubles wins, lost in the championship match of both the number one singles and doubles flights. Murray is 12-4 (.750) at number one singles and 13-3 (.813) at number one doubles for 18.5 points on the season.

Senior co-captain Courtney Chauvette (West Warwick, RI) is 8-6 (.571) at number six singles and 8-7 (.571) at number three doubles for 12.0 points on the season.

Sophomore Kristin Mandsager (Portsmouth, RI) is 3-1 (.750) in singles and 1-0 (1.000) in doubles for 3.5 points on the season.

Sophomore Amy Lancellotta (West Warwick, RI) is 0-1 (.000) in singles and 1-1 (.500) in doubles for 0.5 points on the season.

Junior Sara Hebert (Cumberland, RI) and junior Beth Lardaro (Peace Dale, RI) have yet to see action this season.

RIC is currently 11-3 on the season. In upcoming action, RIC will play at Clark University on Oct. 17 and take part in the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) on Oct. 20-21.
