MARCHITTO’S RBI SINGLE UPSETS RIC, 1-0, IN EIGHT
Savelle Throws Second Tournament Shutout in Warrior Victory

Providence, RI—Freshman right fielder Ashley Marchitto (Canton, CT) belted an RBI single to score freshman left fielder Allison Kane (Waterford, CT) to lift fifth-seeded Eastern Connecticut past top-seeded Rhode Island College, 1-0, at the 2005 Little East Conference Softball Tournament. Kane led off the bottom of the eighth by reaching on error. She advanced to second on sophomore Nikki Vachon’s (East Haddam, CT) single. Sophomore third baseman Samantha Morrow (Tolland, CT) sacrificed the pair over and Marchitto did the rest.

RIC is eliminated from the tournament, while the Warriors advance to face second-seeded Keene State at 2 p.m. Marchitto was the lone multiple-hit player in the game, going 2-for-4 with the game-winning RBI.

ECSU junior starting pitcher Lindsay Savelle (Cheshire, CT) threw a complete game shutout, her second of the tournament, fanning four in the win. Savelle ups her record to 10-15.

Both teams had opportunities with runners on in the seventh inning, but each time the defense won out. RIC freshman starting pitcher Heidi Eichler (Madison, CT) took the loss, falling to 12-8 on the season.
