Tufts Edges Wellesley, 2-1
Gelmetti Tosses Complete-Game Gem

Providence, RI—Second-seeded Tufts University downed third-seeded Wellesley, 2-1, to advance in the championship bracket of the 2007 NCAA Div. III New England Regional Softball Tournament Friday afternoon at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex.

The Jumbos (30-11) will face top-seeded Rhode Island College at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, while the Blue (23-13) head into the elimination bracket to face fourth-seeded Keene State College at noon. Both Tufts and RIC are unbeaten with 2-0 marks at the regional.

Wellesley junior pitcher Jenna Harvey (Delta, B.C.) set down the first seven Tufts hitters she faced before the Jumbos broke through with one down in the third inning. Sophomore third baseman Samantha Kuhles (Somerville, NJ) and sophomore left fielder Roni Herbst (Montclair, NJ) notched RBI singles to put Tufts up, 2-0.

The Blue finally solved Tufts sophomore starting pitcher Lauren Gelmetti (Westfield, NJ) in the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior shortstop Alexander Coari (Geneva, IL) led off the stanza with a single through the left side, moving to third on a fielder’s choice and then scoring on a throwing error. Freshman Alex Warren (Delta, B.C.) ripped a single to center, but Jumbos junior center fielder Erica Bailey (Scottsdale, AZ) cut down junior catcher Kara Wong (Milford, MA) at the plate to keep the game at 2-1.

Tufts sophomore right fielder Maya Ripecky (Chicago, IL) made two great catches off of deep drives in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the win.

Gelmetti hurled seven innings, allowing one unearned run on six hits to go along with five strikeouts to earn her ninth (9-2) win. Harvey took the loss (17-5), throwing seven innings, allowing eight hits and two runs to go along with seven strikeouts.
