Wellesley Gives Misericordia the Blues
Harvey Sets Down Lions With 13 K’s

Providence, RI—Junior starting pitcher Jenna Harvey (London, Ontario) struck out 13 batters to power third-seeded Wellesley College to an, 8-0, victory over sixth-seeded College Misericordia in the first round on the NCAA Division III Softball New England Regional this afternoon at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex.

Wellesley (23-12) will face the winner of second-seeded Tufts University and seventh-seeded Emerson College tomorrow at 2 p.m., while the Misericordia (29-15) squares off against the loser of the Jumbos and Lions at noon in an elimination game.

Harvey was nothing short of spectacular in the pitching circle, firing a one-hit, complete game shutout to raise her record to 17-4. She struck out the first 10 batters she faced, while only allowing a lone Cougar to reach third base once.

Wellesley gave Harvey plenty of run support in the first frame, pushing across four runs. With one-out, the next four Blue batters reached on two hits, a walk, and a fielder’s choice. Freshman first baseman Alex Warren (Delta, B.C.) cracked the scoring column with an RBI double to left field, scoring junior shortstop Alexandria Coari (Geneva, IL). Harvey helped out her own cause, driving in a run on a fielder’s choice, while a pair of wild pitches capped the surge.

The Blue scored a pair of runs in the third and fifth innings, respectively, to seal the victory and advance in the championship bracket. Harvey also paced the offensive attack with a 1-for-2 showing at the plate with two RBIs and three runs scored. Sophomore Beej Grundlock (Blackwood, NJ) went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Misericordia sophomore starting pitcher Nichole Decatur (Sayre, PA) threw the first the three frames, giving up six runs on five hits, while issuing a pair of walks. Freshman Katherine Lucenti (Montrose, PA) came on in relief to surrender two runs on two hits in 1.2 innings of work.
