Coach Riel is a lifelong hockey student who has played and coached for more than 45 years. He has coached at all levels of youth hockey in USA Hockey affiliated programs since 1990. 

Prior to taking over the reigns of the Rhode Island College program in 2015, he was the Lincoln (RI) High School coach from 2002-10, and again in 2014, where he led his team to nine consecutive state playoff appearances, which included a state championship in 2006.

Coach Riel is a retired Police Detective Commander (1984-2004) who returned to active military duty as a RI Air National Guard member from 2004-15. He retired from the Air Force in 2015 as a Lieutenant Colonel is a  proud veteran of both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Coach Rielís military experience greatly informs his coaching process and he always strives to produce the smartest, most team-focused squads he can through a collaborative, focused, and disciplined coaching style involving all players and coaches.

Coach Riel holds a bachelors degree in criminal justice from Roger Williams University and a master's degree in administration of justice from Salve Regina University. He  is also a graduate of the United States Air Forceís Air War College, with a certificate in Strategic Studies.
