Rhode Island College Student-Athlete Journal

By Melissa Carpentier and Allison Vales ; RIC Women’s Soccer

On August 26, 2002, 19 girls and coaches met for the first time as the Rhode Island College women’s soccer team. With returning players, new players and two new coaches, we would form a unique and different team from all the teams that came before us.

We would have to come together as coaches and players to form a single unit in this week. A team that would know one another, on and off the field, and how to play together as one in order to make our upcoming season a successful one.

Through the running, the drills, the shooting, and the countless pushups and crunches, we started to take shape. Both Head Coach Ryan Angel and Assistant Coach Jessica Robitaille expected great things of us and we were ready to comply with those expectations.

We all put in 110 percent competing for the starting positions, as well as the supporting positions. Coach Angel and Coach Robitaille taught us the game of possession and how much better it is to let the ball do the work.

As we went through the week, sore as we were, we pushed ourselves as a team, encouraging each other and pushing each other to continuously work harder for the greater good of the team.

We scrimmaged both Regis College and CCRI, that week, learning significant things from both games to strengthen our playing. We got a taste of what it was like to face competition and to play as a full and complete team.

Now, as we have started our season, with two wins and a loss, we now call ourselves and show ourselves to be a team in practice, in competition, and in our daily lives away from the field.

That is what teamwork is all about. Pushing each other, encouraging each other, supporting each other, and befriending each other.

With hard work and a love for the game, coupled with fun and laughter, we will succeed.

The Rhode Island College women’s soccer team is currently 2-1 overall and has yet to see action in the Little East Conference. The Anchorwomen split two games at the Roger Williams Tournament to begin the season and hammered Rivier College 6-0 in their latest action.
