Cardona, Nelson and Schimmel to Captain Rhode Island College Menís Soccer


Providence, RIóRhode Island College seniors Brian Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) and Josh Nelson (Pascoag, RI), along with junior German Cardona (Pawtucket, RI), will captain the menís soccer team for the 2003 season.


Schimmel, a sweeper, played in 19 games, starting all of them, in 2002. He had three assists for three points on the season.


He is a marketing major and a 2000 graduate of Cumberland High School.


Cardona, a midfielder, played in 12 games, starting six of them, in 2002. He had one goal and three assists for five points.


He is a computer animation major and a 2000 graduate of Tolman High School.


Nelson, a stopper, played in nine games, starting seven of them in 2002. He served as a team co-captain last fall.


He is a physical education/health major and a 2000 graduate of Burrillville High School.


Head Coach Len Mercurioís team was picked to finish fifth in the Little East Conference Pre-season Coachesí Poll. The Anchormen open the season at the Mass. College of Liberal Arts Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 6-7. RIC will face SUNY-Brockport in the opener at 1 p.m. on Sept. 6.
