Rhode Island College Wrestling Update #7

(16-8 Overall; 11-5 in the NECCWA; 6-0 in the Pilgrim League)

2004 Pilgrim Wrestling League Champions


Providence, RI--Head Coach Jay Jonesí team finished the regular season with a 16-8 overall record, an 11-5 mark in the New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) and were 6-0 in the Pilgrim Wrestling League.


RIC won its second consecutive Pilgrim Wrestling League title by winning three matches last week. The Anchormen defeated Coast Guard, 24-23, and Johnson & Wales, 21-20, at a tri-meet on Feb. 10. The one-point win over the Wildcats assured RIC of the Pilgrim League title. RIC stayed undefeated by beating Bridgewater State, 25-14, at a tri-meet hosted by Trinity on Feb. 14. The Anchormen's, 33-3, loss to Trinity was the only blemish on their schedule last week.


RIC posted a perfect 6-0 mark in the Pilgrim Wrestling League for the second consecutive season this winter. The last time RIC lost a Pilgrim League match was a 26-13 loss to Johnson and Wales on Feb. 5, 2002. The Anchormen have won 13 consecutive Pilgrim League matches.


In addition, RIC's 16 regular season victories are the most since the 1991-92 team won 18. The Anchormen, the sixth-ranked team in New England, will compete at the 2004 NECCWA Championships, hosted by WPI, on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 21-22.


Junior Justin Deveau (North Attleboro, MA) is ranked number one in New England at 285 lbs. He is 34-2 at 285 lbs. with 145 points, 45 takedowns, nine reversals, 23 escapes, 15 near-falls and five pins. Deveau has a 23-match winning streak. Deveau placed first at the Citrus Invitational on Dec. 29, third at the RIT Invitational on Dec. 6, third at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 22 and first at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 15.


Junior Keith Nelson (Rhinebeck, NY) is ranked sixth in New England at 174 lbs. He is 33-13 at 174 lbs. with 130 points, 74 takedowns, six reversals, 50 escapes, 21 near-falls and eight pins. He placed fourth at the RIT Invitational on Dec. 6, third at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 23 and fifth at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 15.


Freshman Mike Bonora (Nutley, NJ) is ranked fourth in New England at 141 lbs. He is 19-7 at 141 lbs. with 70 points, 93 takedowns, ten reversals, 37 escapes, 12 near-falls and one pin. He placed second at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 15.


Sophomore Todd Bloom (Wantagh, NY) is ranked fifth in New England at 133 lbs. He is 23-14 at 133 lbs. with 106 points, 51 takedowns, 11 reversals, 30 escapes, 20 near-falls and seven pins.


Sophomore Arty Privedenyuk (Springfield, MA) is 19-16 at 165 lbs. with 85 points, 30 takedowns, 21 reversals, 30 escapes, 20 near-falls and five pins.


Freshman Eric Martell (Chepachet, RI) is 3-6 at 184 lbs. with 18 points, four takedowns, one reversal, 22 escapes and two pins. Martell's pin of JWU's D.J. Ernest was the highlight of his young career and helped RIC upset the heavily favored 17-4 Wildcats for the Pilgrim League title on Feb. 10.


Junior Luke Emmons (West Greenwich, RI) is 16-15 at 149 lbs. with 69 points, 33 takedowns, 14 reversals, 31 escapes, 20 near-falls and four pins. He placed fifth at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 15.


Junior Allyn Quibble (Ledyard, CT) is ranked sixth in New England at 149 lbs. He is 8-9 at 149 lbs. with 42 points, 25 takedowns, five reversals, 12 escapes, eight near-falls and five pins.


Freshman Ian Coyne (Amston, CT) is 12-11 at 157 lbs. with 39 points, 20 takedowns, six reversals, 43 escapes and one near-fall.


Freshman Olutosin Taylor (Copiague, NY) is 10-6 at 197 lbs. with 43 points, 24 takedowns, six reversals, 16 escapes, nine near-falls and five pins.


Junior Matt Kelly (Carver, MA) is 7-10 at 149 lbs. with 37 points, six takedowns, one reversal, 14 escapes and four near-falls and four pins.


Freshman Ray Hanley (Wantagh, NY) is 13-20 at 125 lbs. with 60 points, 14 takedowns, 15 reversals, 29 escapes, nine near-falls and four pins.


Junior Eddy German (Providence, RI) is 5-7 at 125 lbs. With 16 points, 23 takedowns, four reversals, 12 escapes and one near-fall.


Sophomore Richard Chute (Wrentham, MA) is 8-9 at 141 lbs. with 37 points, 17 takedowns, five reversals, 27 escapes, five near-falls and one pin.


Junior Ryan Klupt (Miller Place, NY) is 5-28 at 184 lbs. with 21 points, 14 takedowns, six reversals and 33 escapes.


Junior Andre LaBonte (Harrisville, RI) is 3-3 at 285 lbs. with 12 points, three takedowns, seven escapes and one pin.


Senior Giovanni Calise (Cranston, RI) is 2-5 at 197 lbs. with 12 points, one takedown, one reversal and two pins.


Junior Dan Fortner (Mystic, CT) is 3-8 at 157 lbs. with nine points, eight takedowns, 18 escapes and two near-falls.


Junior Dave Paquette (Ledyard, CT) is 10-8 at 157 lbs. with 41 points, 30 takedowns, eight reversals, 20 escapes, five near-falls and two pins.


Freshman Ricky Boyle (North Attleboro, MA) is 0-8 at 165 lbs. with three takedowns and 19 escapes.


Freshman Ryan DeSisto (Warwick, RI) is 1-5 at 141 lbs. with six points, one takedown, two reversals, five escapes and one pin.


Freshman Tim Donnelly (Stamford, CT) is 0-1 at 197 lbs. with one escape.


Freshman Chris Murray (Ardsley, NY) is 4-6 at 133 lbs. with 18 points, 10 takedowns, three reversals, seven escapes, three near-falls and two pins.


Freshman Colin Smith (Wading River, NY) is 0-6 at 149 lbs. with four takedowns and nine escapes.
