Mike Bonora Named Pilgrim Wrestling League Rookie of the Week

Providence, RI—Rhode Island College freshman wrestler Mike Bonora (Nutley, NJ) was named the Pilgrim Wrestling League’s Rookie of the Week for the second time this season.

He won all three of his matches last week, including a 6-1 decision over Johnson & Wales' Anthony Montes, a key for the Anchormen in their 21-20 victory over the Wildcats that gave them their second consecutive Pilgrim Wrestling League title. Bonora is ranked fourth in New England at 141 lbs. He is 19-7 at 141 lbs. with 70 points, 93 takedowns, ten reversals, 37 escapes, 12 near-falls and one pin. He placed second at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 15.

Bonora is a 2003 graduate of Nutley High School.

Head Coach Jay Jones’ team finished the regular season with a 16-8 overall record, an 11-5 mark in the New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) and was 6-0 in the Pilgrim Wrestling League.

RIC won its second consecutive Pilgrim Wrestling League title by winning three matches last week. The Anchormen defeated Coast Guard, 24-23, and Johnson & Wales, 21-20, at a tri-meet on Feb. 10. The one-point win over the Wildcats assured RIC of the Pilgrim League title. RIC stayed undefeated by beating Bridgewater State, 25-14, at a tri-meet hosted by Trinity on Feb. 14. The Anchormen's, 33-3, loss to Trinity was the only blemish on their schedule last week.

RIC posted a perfect 6-0 mark in the Pilgrim Wrestling League for the second consecutive season this winter. The last time RIC lost a Pilgrim League match was a 26-13 loss to Johnson and Wales on Feb. 5, 2002. The Anchormen have won 13 consecutive Pilgrim League matches.

In addition, RIC's 16 regular season victories are the most since the 1991-92 team won 18. The Anchormen will compete at the 2004 NECCWA Championships, hosted by WPI, on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 21-22.
