Danbury’s B.J. Atkinson Attends
NCAA Leadership Conference

Providence, RI--Rhode Island College junior wrestler B.J. Atkinson (Danbury, CT) participated in the 2005 NCAA Leadership Conference, which was held May 29-June 2 at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex and Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

The mission of the NCAA Leadership Conference is to develop a diverse group of student-athletes who will actively participate in and experience a multitude of challenging and thought-provoking activities that will enable them to become change agents on their campuses and in their communities. It provides the NCAA student-athletes with the opportunity to discuss and explore critical issues facing their peers; to enhance their leadership skills; and to promote better communication among student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty and communities.

During the 2004-05 season, Atkinson earned All-New England honors at 285 lbs., placing fourth at the New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) Championships. He was 13-14 at 285 lbs. with 66 points, 24 takedowns, four near-falls and seven pins on the season. He placed fifth at 285 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 13.

Participants engaged in a variety of developmental activities designed to enhance their communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills and will also participate in collaborative projects and critical thinking. Student-athletes developed their leadership skills through interactive hands-on work in small groups, and have the opportunity to reflect on their experiences.

Participating student-athletes represented all NCAA Divisions, a variety of different sports, both genders and different ethnicities.

Also nominated to attend this conference from RIC were sophomore men’s basketball player John Weir (Danbury, CT) and sophomore women’s volleyball player Kara Sarcione (Londonderry, NH).
