Flower City Soccer Tournament

Men's Soccer

Edwin Fauver Stadium, Rochester, NY

Semifinal Round:

St. John Fisher 1, Rhode Island College 0:

Rochester, New York (Sept. 2) - Sophomore Ricky Martinez (Lancaster, NY/Iroqouis HS) headed in a cross from Sal Valle (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) at 71:27 to put St. John Fisher into the championship game of the Flower City Soccer Tournament at the University of Rochester.

Fisher (1-0) will play in Sunday's championship game at 3 pm against either SUNY Oswego or host Rochester. Rhode Island College (0-1) will play in the noon consolation game.

Each team managed only one good scoring chance in the first half. Early in the game, Rhode Island freshman Tyrell Burgess (Smiths, Bermuda/Wilbraham & Monson) broke through on left wing. Fisher goalkeeper Sean Connors (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) made a sliding save.

Midway through the period, Valle pushed a lead pass into the path of Fisher';s Anthony DiAngelo (Webster, NY/McQuaid) but his shot was saved by RIC's Jadon Neves (Warren, RI/Mt. Hope).

With 18:33 left, Valle redirected a long ball from midfield. He headed it across the middle of the box. Neves came off the line and when he failed to punch it clear, Martinez headed it into the top left corner.

Burgess figured in two good chances to equalize for the Anchormen. Less than a minute after the Fisher goal, he intercepted a Connors clearance and crossed it to Nic Rossi (North Kingstown, RI/Bishop Hendricken). His shot for the low left corner was blocked into the post by Connors and cleared. With 10:48 to play, he drilled a 40-yard free kick that Connors tipped into the underside of the crossbar. A followup header by James Lynch (Jamestown, RI/Bishop Hendricken) was cleared.

Connors finished with six saves. He came out with four seconds to play after being shaken up on a goalmouth collision. Neves had 10 saves.
