Rhode Island College Men’s Soccer Update #3

(4-3 Overall; 2-0 in the Little East Conference)

Providence, RI--Head Coach John Mello’s team is 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the Little East Conference. The Anchormen are tied with Keene State and Plymouth State for first place atop the LEC standings.

Anchormen Notables

RIC played at Johnson & Wales on Wednesday, Sept. 21 and came away with a 5-0 victory. Senior forward Kyle Teixeira (Warren, RI) scored his seventh career hat trick while also adding an assist in the contest. Junior defender James Lynch (Jamestown, RI) scored RIC’s first goal of the game, which later proved to be the game-winner. Freshman forward Matt Gesvaldi (North Smithfield, RI) closed out the scoring with his first collegiate goal in the 85th minute. Two of RIC’s five goals were assisted by freshman forward Tyrell Burgess (Smiths, Bermuda).

In the home opener, the Anchormen earned their second Little East Conference victory of the season with a 6-0 win over UMass Boston on Saturday, Sept. 24. Sophomore midfielder James Nigrelli (Ashaway, RI) netted what proved to be the game-winning goal in the ninth minute. Junior midfielder Holman Giraldo (Pawtucket, RI) scored two goals while Teixeira, freshman defender Dan Rodrigues (Cumberland, RI) and junior forward Nick Tavares (East Providence, RI) each tallied a score. Rodrigues’ tally was his first collegiate goal.

With his play last week, Lynch was named the Little East Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week. As a team, the Anchormen have posted three consecutive shutouts and have not allowed a goal in the last 271:42.
