BSC Women’s Soccer Defeats Rhode Island College, 4-1

Bridgewater, MA – In collegiate women’s soccer action this afternoon at Swenson Field, the Bridgewater State College Bears notched their fourth straight victory as they defeated the visiting Anchorwomen of Rhode Island College by a score of 4-1. With the win, Bridgewater improves their regular season record to 7-3. RIC, which saw its six-game winning streak come to an end, slips to 9-3 on the season.

Sophomore forward Julie Sullivan (Whitman, MA) opened the scoring for the Bears in the 36th minute as she knocked home a cross from freshman midfielder Megan Williamson (Ludlow, MA).  That would be all the scoring in the opening half as the Bears led 1-0 going into the break.

Bridgewater put the game away early in the second half with two quick goals.  Senior forward Heather Fredette (Westminster, MA) gave BSC a two-goal lead in the 49th minute as she found the top-left corner of the net with a well-placed shot from 20 yards out. Less than four minutes later, senior midfielder Christine Spellman (Plymouth, MA) made it a 3-0 game as she intercepted a clear on the right side and ripped a shot into the top-left corner.

RIC cut the lead to 3-1 at the 68:45 mark with a goal from sophomore midfielder Krista MacKinnon (Exeter, RI).  For MacKinnon it was her sixth goal of the season which ties her for the team lead.  BSC thwarted any chance of a comeback however as less than three minutes later junior midfielder Stephanie Johnson (Leicester, MA) scored her second goal in as many games off a nice assist from Williamson.

Junior goaltender Emily Schlosser (Petersham, MA) picked up the win in goal for the Bears as she registered three saves in 57 minutes of work.  Schlosser improved her win-loss record to 7-2 on the season while lowering her goals against average to an impressive 0.72.  Fellow sophomore Suzi Estey (South Dennis, MA) played the final 33 minutes in goal and recorded two saves.  Rhode Island freshman keeper Krissie Pyzynski (Bristol, CT) took the loss for the Anchorwomen as she turned aside four shots.

The Bears return to the field on Saturday afternoon as they head to scenic Fitchburg, Massachusetts to take on MASCAC rival Fitchburg State at 5 PM.  RIC is also in action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Keene State College for a Little East Conference match with the Owls.  Game time is 1 o’clock.
