Lyons Swept in Non-Conference Doubleheader
by Rhode Island College

NORTON, MA-The Wheaton College softball team lost both ends of a doubleheader with non-conference foe Rhode Island College, 5-2 in nine innings and 7-3 during the Lyons' home openers on Tuesday at Clark Field. The Blue and White fell to 13-5, while Rhode Island College moved to 9-5.

The visitors loaded the bases with one out in the third inning of game one, but the Lyons escaped the jam when sophomore pitcher Audrey Poulton (Charlestown, RI/Chariho Regional) snagged a line drive and tossed to classmate Erika Marini (Pawtucket, RI/Saint Raphael Academy) at third base to double-up a runner. Wheaton's offense immediately responded, as junior Nicole Lachance (Rochester, NH/Spaulding) hit her first collegiate homer in the bottom of the inning to plate a pair of unearned runs.

In the top of the fourth, junior Nicole Riley (North Providence, RI/North Providence) and senior Casie Lyons (Hudson, MA/Hudson) smacked consecutive run-scoring hits for the Anchorwomen to knot the game at two. Wheaton had a pair of golden opportunities to break the deadlock but left the bases loaded in the fourth and stranded a pair of runners in the sixth. Poulton held Rhode Island College hitless from the fifth through eighth innings, setting down 12 of 14 batters, before the visitors tallied three runs on one hit and two errors in the ninth inning. The Lyons put runners on first and third with one down in the bottom of the inning but came away empty.

Poulton pitched all nine innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits while fanning six and walking three batters. Rhode Island College senior Katie Benevides (North Dighton, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth) was the lone hitter to record multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-4. Riley struck out two, walked one and did not allow an earned run during her complete-game six-hitter.

During the second contest, Rhode Island College plated five runs on five hits and two errors during the fourth inning to break open a scoreless game. With a runner on third and two down, the next six Anchorwomen each reached on either a hit or error, with Benevides providing a two-run single during that time. Four of the runs proved to be unearned.

The visitors tacked on two more two-out runs in the sixth before the Lyons attempted to erase a 7-0 deficit. Freshman Emily Hildreth (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) cracked a two-run double to the fence in left during the bottom of the inning before Poulton plated Hildreth with a two-out, pinch-hit single, but Wheaton went down in order in the seventh.

Hildreth and freshman Brady Benton (Concord, NH/Concord) each finished 2-for-3, while sophomore Jodi Moynagh (Worcester, MA/Holy Name Central Catholic) suffered the loss after allowing three earned runs on 11 hits while striking out five and walking one. Benevides paced Rhode Island College with a 4-for-4 effort out of the leadoff spot, while sophomore Christie Lotti (Waterford, CT/Waterford) and freshman Justine Burgess (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) each provided 2-for-4 games. Burgess also earned the win after tossing six innings and allowing three runs on seven hits.

Wheaton resumes New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play at Springfield College on Saturday in a doubleheader that begins at 12:00 p.m.
