UMASS DARTMOUTH DOWNS RIC, 18-5

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s women’s lacrosse team took a 7-1 lead less than halfway through the first half of play and went on to defeat visiting Rhode Island College, 18-5, in a Little East Conference game at Cressy Field Wednesday afternoon.

Junior forward Katelyn Elliott (Lowell, MA/Lowell HS) and senior midfielder Mary Doherty (Loudonville, NY/Shaker HS) each scored twice during UMD’s early 7-1 run that essentially sealed the outcome.

Elliott fired a shot past Anchorwomen goalkeeper Sydney Culbertston 17 seconds into the game to make it 1-0. Doherty scored her first goal of the game with 26:L50 left in the first half. Doherty and Elliott each scored three times and senior defender Andrea Travers (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) scored twice during a first half that ended with the Corsairs ahead, 11-1.

Doherty finished with five goals, while Elliott had four goals and two assists. Travers, senior defenseman Katelyn Sullivan (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) and freshman midfielder Connie Jones (Springfield, MA/Somers (CT) HS) each had two goals, and sophomore midfielder Marie Spang (Wakefield, MA/.Wakefield HS), junior forward Susie Nearhoof (Frederick, MD/Johnson HS/Frederick CC) and sophomore midfielder Leanne Canillas (New City, MA/Clarkstown HS) each scored once.

Melissa Reggio had two goals for RIC, while Caitlin Gavin, Crystal Colagiovanni and Marissa Kielbasinski each had one.

“We played very well,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jerry Jennings. “Our goalkeeper, (sophomore) Erin Doherty (West Newbury, MA/Pentucket HS), did a great job. We were very well balanced on offense, which was one of our goals. We were able to spread out our scoring among a number of players.”

The Corsairs out shot the Anchorwomen, 41-14. Doherty made eight saves, while Culbertston finished with 16.

The Corsairs improved to 3-3 and 1-1 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while Rhode Island College dropped to 2-7 and 0-1. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Roger Williams next Monday, while RIC will host Keene State Saturday.
