UMASS DARTMOUTH DOWNS RIC, 18-5 |

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA- The University of
Massachusetts Dartmouth’s women’s lacrosse team took a 7-1 lead less
than halfway through the first half of play and went on to defeat
visiting Rhode Island College, 18-5, in a Little East Conference game
at Cressy Field Wednesday afternoon. |

Junior forward Katelyn Elliott
(Lowell, MA/Lowell HS) and senior midfielder Mary Doherty
(Loudonville, NY/Shaker HS) each scored twice during UMD’s early
7-1 run that essentially sealed the outcome. |
|
|
|
Elliott fired a shot past Anchorwomen
goalkeeper Sydney Culbertston 17 seconds into the game to make it 1-0.
Doherty scored her first goal of the game with 26:L50 left in the
first half. Doherty and Elliott each scored three times and senior
defender Andrea Travers (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) scored twice
during a first half that ended with the Corsairs ahead, 11-1. |

Doherty finished with five goals, while
Elliott had four goals and two assists. Travers, senior defenseman
Katelyn Sullivan (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) and freshman
midfielder Connie Jones (Springfield, MA/Somers (CT) HS) each
had two goals, and sophomore midfielder Marie Spang (Wakefield,
MA/.Wakefield HS), junior forward Susie Nearhoof (Frederick,
MD/Johnson HS/Frederick CC) and sophomore midfielder Leanne
Canillas (New City, MA/Clarkstown HS) each scored once. |

Melissa Reggio had two goals for RIC,
while Caitlin Gavin, Crystal Colagiovanni and Marissa Kielbasinski
each had one. |

“We played
very well,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jerry Jennings. “Our
goalkeeper, (sophomore) Erin Doherty (West Newbury, MA/Pentucket HS),
did a great job. We were very well balanced on offense, which was one
of our goals. We were able to spread out our scoring among a number of
players.” |

The Corsairs out shot the Anchorwomen,
41-14. Doherty made eight saves, while Culbertston finished with 16. |
|
|
|
The Corsairs improved to 3-3 and 1-1 in
the Little East Conference with the victory, while Rhode Island
College dropped to 2-7 and 0-1. UMass Dartmouth will return to action
when they visit Roger Williams next Monday, while RIC will host Keene
State Saturday. |
