NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Two Rhode Island College pitchers combined on a four-hitter and the Anchormen exploded for six runs in the top of the fifth inning and went on to a 6-0 Little East Conference victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s baseball team at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Tuesday afternoon.


Eric Thibault (So. Somerset, MA) held the Corsairs to three hits during the first eight innings, walking oine and striking out five. He retired 17 batters in succession between singles by UMD senior first baseman Dan Mancini (Marlboro, MA/Marlboro HS), who singled in the first inning and again in the bottom of the seventh. Eric Fama allowed one hit in the ninth and completed the shutout.


RIC scored all six of their runs in the top of the fifth inning. Luis Feliz walked and moved to second on a single by Ray De La Cruz. Michael McDonnell reached on an error by Mancini, loading the bases. Tim Henault singled to drive in the first run of the game against UMass Dartmouth starter Brian Vanasse (So. Sterling, MA/Wachusett HS). Freshman Matt Kurth (Chilmark, MA/Martha’s Vineyard HS) relived Vanasse and was greeted by a run-scoring single by Chris O’Connors. Michael Naylor capped the rally with a grand slam home run to make it 6-0.


Sophomore left fielder Dylan Zygmont (Swansea, MA/Case HS) and freshman center fielder Sean Smolinsky (Hull, MA/Hull HS) got the Corsairs’ other hits. Zygmont singled off Thibault in the eighth inning, and Smolinsky got a hit off Fama in the bottom of the ninth.


Thibault earned the victory and improved his record to 3-3. Vanasse took the loss and dropped to 0-3.


UMass Dartmouth fell to 5-14 and 2-4 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while Rhode Island College saw their record improve to 10-13 and 3-3 in LEC play. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Johnson & Wales in a non-conference game Thursday afternoon, while RIC will host Roger Williams Wednesday for a doubleheader.
