SECOND HALF SURGE PUSHES USM PAST RIC, 14-11
Flood Scores Seven in Huskies Win

Providence, RI—Southern Maine came back from a 6-5 halftime deficit to defeat Rhode Island College, 14-11, in collegiate women’s lacrosse action on Thursday afternoon. USM improves its record to 4-6 overall and 2-2 in the Little East Conference, while RIC falls to 2-10 overall and remains winless with an 0-3 mark in the LEC. It was the seventh straight loss for RIC this season.

The Anchorwomen, who played two players down the entire contest, got on the board first with goals by junior center Caitlin Gavin (Portsmouth, RI) and sophomore midfielder Melissa Reggio (Commack, NY) early in the game. The Huskies were trailing, 6-3, late in the first half, until junior attack Virginia Flood (Acton, ME) netted two goals in the final minutes to pull the Huskies within one goal at the break.

The game was delayed for an hour at halftime due to thunder and lightning. When play started up, Gavin and Reggio each scored in the first 5:49 of the second half before Southern Maine caught fire. Flood scored five times and junior attack Sarah Trent (Chanhassen, MN) netted two goals as the Huskies pulled away. Gavin and Reggio kept the Anchorwomen within striking distance, but RIC was unable to close the gap down the stretch.

Flood finished with seven goals and two assists to lead USM, while Gavin scored a game-high eight goals to lead RIC. Southern Maine sophomore goalkeeper Katie Quartuccio (Poughkeepsie, NY) made 13 saves to earn the win and up her record to 4-6. RIC sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Culbertson (North Kingstown, RI) made 14 saves as her record falls to 2-10 on the season.

The Anchorwomen have now lost 24 consecutive Little East Conference regular season games.

In upcoming action, RIC will host Plymouth State on Saturday, Apr. 15 at 1 p.m.
