NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Rhode Island College rallied to win the first game of a Little East Conference doubleheader and the second game was called because of darkness at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Tuesday afternoon. The Anchorwomen came from behind to win the opener, 7-5. UMass Dartmouth and RIC were tied, 5-5, when the second game was called due to darkness after eight innings.

UMD took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the second game on run-scoring singles by freshman shortstop Vicki Andruskiewicz (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) and freshman third baseman Brittney Kannan (Methuen, MA/Central Catholic HS). A solo homer by Justine Burgess and a three-run shot by Christie Lotti in the top of the fifth gave the Anchorwomen the lead. Kannan’s RBI single in the bottom of the fifth and a run-scoring double by freshman first baseman Christine White and Andruszkiewicz’ RBI single in the seventh tied the score and sent the game into extra innings.

Junior designated hitter Jessica Werner doubled home a pair of runs to help stake UMass Dartmouth to a 3-2 lead in the opener before RIC scored five times in the top of the sixth to take the lead. Katie Benevides doubled home one run, and Lotti drove home three more. Senior second baseman Amanda Leal (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) and Andruszkiewicz countered with run scoring hits in the bottom of the seventh for the Corsairs. But Nicole Riley struck out the side to end the threat.

Riley earned the victory, improving to 13-2, while Kannan took the loss and fell to 5-4.

“In the first game, our hitting picked up as the game went on, and we had a lapse in the sixth when they scored five runs,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Holly Morris. “RIC is a very good team, and we can’t afford to have lapses against a team like that. We did bounce back, and I was pleased with our play overall.”

UMass Dartmouth is now 11-4-1, 2-3-1 in the Little East Conference after the doubleheader, while Rhode Island College is now 18-7-1 and 4-1-1. The Corsairs will return to action when they host UMass Boston in another Little East Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon, while RIC will return to action Wednesday when they host Coast Guard in a non-conference doubleheader.
