BSC Bears Fall to Rhode Island College, 62-58

Second Half Comeback Falls Short

Rhode Island College (2-1)                             35            27             62

Bridgewater State College (2-1)                     27            31             58

Bridgewater, MA – In collegiate women’s basketball action this evening from the Tinsley Center, Rhode Island College withstood a furious Bridgewater State second half rally, as the Anchorwomen hung on for a 62-58 win.  With the win Rhode Island improves to 2-1 on the season.  Bridgewater State falls to 2-1 as they suffer their first loss of the year.

Bridgewater trailed by 18 points with less than six minutes remaining in the game.  The Bears went on a 20-5 run and cut the lead to three points, 59-56, on a Samantha Curry (Braintree, MA) three-point play with a minute to go.  Curry had 12 of her game-high 19 points during the run.  The rally was sparked by some terrific defensive pressure that forced a number of RIC turnovers during the five-minute stretch.

That would be as close as the Bears would get, however, as RIC senior guard Jamie Angell (Cranston, RI) dashed all hopes of a comeback as she drained a big three-pointer with 34 second left to push the lead back to six points.  Bridgewater got a basket as time expired to account for the 62-58 final score.  Angell finished with 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting.  She also added 5 assists and 3 steals.

RIC was in control for much of the game as they limited BSC to 28% shooting (20-for-71) from the floor including just 7 of 34 (21%) in the first half.  The Bears were able to stay in shouting distance thanks in part to some outstanding foul shooting as BSC connected on 16 of 20 free throws including a deadly 13 of 14 (93%) from the line in the first half.

Sophomore forward Colleen Feeney (Providence, RI) was the high scorer for the Anchorwomen as she posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 boards.  She also added 4 steals.  Junior forward Kari Geisler (Deerfield, NH) also recorded a double-double as she finished with 12 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.

For the Bears, Curry had 8 rebounds to go along with her 19 points, while senior guard Megan King (Cherry Valley, MA) chipped in with 11 points and 9 boards.  Sophomore guard Melissa Murphy (Rockland, MA) also finished in double figures as she had 10 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 5 steals.

Both teams will now enjoy the Thanksgiving Holiday and will get back to action next Tuesday.  Rhode Island will travel to Westfield State to take on the Owls at 7 o’clock, while Bridgewater heads to Chestnut Hill for a 6 o’clock tip-off at Pine Manor College.
