2007 Rhode Island College Baseball Season Summary

(21-14 Overall; 8-6 in the Little East)

Providence, RI--Head Coach Jay Grenier's team (Career record: 337-213-1, .613) finished the 2007 season with a 21-14 overall record and an 8-6 (third place tie) mark in the Little East Conference.

The Anchormen notched their second consecutive winning season and 21-win campaign since 2003, tying ’06 squad for the most wins in a season since the 1979 squad won 24.

RIC was eliminated from the 2007 Little East Conference Baseball Tournament with losses to Southern Maine (9-8) on May 9 and to the eventual champion Eastern Connecticut (10-2) on May 10.

Senior pitcher Caleb Barber (Mystic, CT) closed out his RIC career having appeared in 31 games, starting 21 of them. He posted a 11-5 career record to go along with a 7.37 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 119.2 inning pitched.

As a senior in 2007, he appeared in six games, starting five of them. He was 2-0 with a 8.31 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 21.2 innings pitched.

 As a junior in 2006, Barber appeared in 12 games, starting 10 of them. He was 6-3 with a 5.51 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 67.0 innings pitched. Barber led the team in wins and was second on the squad in both innings pitched and strikeouts.

As a sophomore in 2005, he appeared in six games, starting three of them. He owned a 2-2 record with one complete game and a 4.91 ERA. In 14.2 innings pitched, he struck out 11 batters.

As a freshman in 2004, he appeared in seven games, starting three of them. He owned a 1-0 record with a 15.98 ERA. In 16.1 innings pitched, he struck out 12 batters.

He is a public relations major with a minor in marketing and a 2003 graduate of Fitch High School.

Senior pitcher Wade Briggs (Woonsocket, RI) closed out his RIC career having appeared in 41 games, starting 23 of them. He posted a 12-9 career record to go along with a 5.16 ERA and 130 strikeouts in 174.1 innings pitched. Briggs ranks eighth all-time at Rhode Island College in both career wins and innings pitched, while ranking sixth in career strikeouts.

As a senior in 2007, Briggs appeared in 10 games, starting eight of them. He was 4-3 with a 5.94 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 47.0 innings pitched.

In 2006, Briggs injured his shoulder and was granted a medical redshirt for the season. He appeared in three games, starting all of them. He was 1-2 with a 5.50 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 18.0 innings pitched.

As a junior in 2005, he appeared in 11 games, starting nine of them. He posted a 3-2 record with one save and threw one complete game. He owned a starting pitchers-low 2.92 ERA and had 44 strikeouts in 61.2 innings pitched.

As a sophomore in 2004, Briggs appeared in eight games, starting two of them. He owned a 2-1 record with a 8.04 ERA. In 28.0 innings pitched, he struck out 14 batters.

As a freshman in 2003, he appeared in nine games, starting one of them. He was 2-1 with a 5.95 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 19.2 innings. Briggs was tied for third on the club in wins.

He is a physical education/health major and a 2002 graduate of Woonsocket High School.

Senior pitcher Brian Farley (North Providence, RI) closed out his RIC career having appeared in 54 games, all of which came in relief. He was 4-4 with a 6.84 career ERA and 45 strikeouts in 73.2 innings pitched. Farley is Rhode Island College’s all-time leader in relief appearances.

As a senior in 2007, he appeared in 15 games. Farley was 0-0 with one save, a 3.43 ERA to go along with 10 strikeouts in 21.0 innings pitched.

As a junior in 2006, Farley appeared in 20 games, all of which came in relief. He was 2-1 with a 7.30 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 24.2 innings pitched. His 20 appearances out of the bullpen are tied for the second highest total in school history for a single season.

As a sophomore in 2005, he appeared in 11 games. He owned a 0-3 record with a 5.28 ERA. In 15.1 innings pitched, he struck out 13 batters.

As a freshman in 2003, he appeared in eight games. He was 2-0 with a 13.50 ERA and eight strikeouts in 12.2 innings.

He is a communications major and a 2002 graduate of North Providence High School.

Senior third baseman Luis Feliz (Cranston, RI) closed out his RIC career having played in 40 games, starting 16 of them. He batted .324 with 13 runs scored, 22 hits, two doubles, one triple, one home run, 11 RBI and one stolen base. Feliz owned a career .426 slugging percentage and a .397 on-base percentage.

As a senior in 2007, he played in 19 games, starting five of them. He batted .375 with five runs scored, 12 hits, one double and six RBI. Feliz owned a .406 slugging percentage, a .364 on-base percentage and a .737 fielding percentage.

As a junior in 2006, Feliz played in 21 games, starting 11 of them. He batted .278 with eight runs, 10 hits, one double, one triple, one home run, five RBI, four walks and one stolen base. He owned a .444 slugging percentage, a .381 on-base percentage and a .850 fielding percentage.

Prior to coming to RIC, Feliz played two seasons at the Community College of Rhode Island in 2004 and 2005.

He is a justice studies major and a 2002 graduate of Cranston High School East.

Senior catcher Tim Henault (East Greenwich, RI) closes out his career as an Anchorman having played in 124 games, starting 120 of them. He batted .338 with 116 runs scored, 162 hits, 33 doubles, seven triples, seven home runs, 98 RBI and 16 stolen bases. He owned a career .479 slugging percentage, a .446 on-base percentage and a .984 fielding percentage.

Henault currently ranks third in runs scored, hits and doubles, fourth in at-bats (480), RBI and total bases (230) and fifth in sacrifice flies (8) all-time in Rhode Island College baseball history.

As a senior in 2007, Henault was named Third Team All-New England and First Team All-Little East Conference. He played in 33 games, starting all of them. He batted .388 with 37 runs scored, 54 hits, 12 doubles, two doubles, three home runs, 25 RBI and six stolen bases. He owned a .568 slugging percentage, a .439 on-base percentage and a .969 fielding percentage.

As a junior in 2006, Henault was named First Team All-Little East Conference. Henault played in 34 games, starting all of them. He batted .377 with 30 runs, 49 hits, 10 doubles, two triples, one home run, 31 RBI, eight walks and three stolen bases. He owned a .508 slugging percentage, a .418 on-base percentage and a .995 fielding percentage. Henault, who was named the team’s MVP, missed the club’s final seven games after being hit by a pitch, which resulted in a broken hand, against Eastern Connecticut on Apr. 29. He was second on the team in batting and was third in both runs and hits.

As a sophomore in 2005, he was named Second Team All-Little East Conference. He played in 37 games, starting 35 of them. He is batted .288 with 42 hits, eight doubles, two triples, two home runs, 19 walks, 33 runs scored and 23 RBI. Henault owned a .411 slugging percentage and a .369 on-base percentage along with a .991 fielding percentage.

As a freshman in 2004, Henault played in 20 games, starting 18 of them. He batted .262 with 17 hits, three doubles, one triple, one home run, 12 walks, 16 runs scored and 19 RBI. Henault owned a .385 slugging percentage, a .392 on-base percentage and a .976 fielding percentage.

He is a psychology major and a 2003 graduate of East Greenwich High School.

Senior right fielder Mike Naylor (Warwick, RI) closed out his Rhode Island College career having played in 157 games, starting all of them. He batted .329 with 132 runs scored, 190 hits, 45 doubles, eight triples, 16 home runs, 127 RBI and 23 stolen bases. He owned a career .517 slugging percentage, a .453 on-base percentage and a .983 fielding percentage. Naylor holds the Rhode Island College record for the most career at-bats (578), runs scored, hits, doubles, RBI and sacrifice flies (12), while ranking second in total bases (299) and third in walks (63).

As a senior in 2007, Naylor was named Second Team All-New England and First Team All-Little East Conference. He played in 35 games, starting all of them, batting .380 with 33 runs scored, 49 hits, 12 doubles, one triple, seven home runs, 38 RBI and five stolen bases. He owned a .651 slugging percentage, a .468 on-base percentage and a .975 fielding percentage. He represented Rhode Island College at the annual NEIBA College All-Star Game, played at Fenway Park on July 22.

As a junior in 2006, he played in 40 games, starting all of them. He batted .301 with 26 runs, 41 hits, nine doubles, one triple, four home runs, 35 RBI, 20 walks and eight stolen bases. He owned a .471 slugging percentage, a .405 on-base percentage and a .934 fielding percentage. Naylor was third on the team in RBI and was fourth in hits.

In 2005, Naylor broke his hand after being hit by a pitch while down South and missed remainder of the season. Prior to getting injured, Naylor played in seven games, starting all of them. He batted .318 with seven hits, one double, six runs scored and three RBI. Naylor owned a .364 slugging percentage, a .333 on-base percentage and a 1.000 fielding percentage.

As a sophomore in 2004, he was named Second Team All-Little East Conference. Naylor played in 35 games, starting all of them. He batted .397 with 56 hits, a team-high 14 doubles, five triples, four home runs, three walks, 34 runs scored and 29 RBI. Naylor owned a .652 slugging percentage, a .422 on-base percentage and a .929 fielding percentage. Naylor ended the season on a team-best 21-game hit streak.

As a freshman in 2003, he played in 40 games, starting all of them. He batted .247 with 33 runs, 37 hits, nine doubles, one triple, one home run, 22 RBI, and eight stolen bases. He owned a .340 slugging percentage, a .350 on-base percentage and a .913 fielding percentage.

He is a general management major and a 2002 graduate of Toll Gate High School.

Junior first baseman Jim Connell (Smithfield, RI) played in 31 games, starting all of them. He batted .328 with 16 runs scored, 38 hits, eight doubles, four home runs and 26 RBI. He owned a .500 slugging percentage, a .391 on-base percentage and a .975 fielding percentage.

Junior pitcher Evan Grogan (East Lyme, CT) appeared in 11 games, starting one of them. He was 1-0 with two saves, a 4.12 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 24.0 innings.

Junior third baseman Pete Olson (North Providence, RI) played in 28 games, starting 27 of them. He batted .315 with 23 runs scored, 34 hits, three doubles, three triples, one home run and 24 RBI. He owned a .426 slugging percentage, a .364 on-base percentage and a .861 fielding percentage.

Junior pitcher Eric Thibault (Somerset, RI) appeared in 12 games, starting nine of them. He was 4-4 with a 4.91 ERA and 42 strikeouts in a team-high 62.1 innings.

Sophomore catcher Jordan Amorin (Swansea, MA) played in 12 games, starting eight of them. He batted .194 with five runs scored, seven hits, two doubles and six RBI. He owned a .250 slugging percentage, a .237 on-base percentage and a .985 fielding percentage.

Sophomore shortstop Josh Cardoso (New Bedford, MA) was named Second Team All-New England and Second Team All-Little East Conference. He played in 34 games, starting all of them. Cardoso batted .398 with 39 runs scored, 53 hits, six doubles, three triples, seven home runs, 33 RBI and four stolen bases. He owned a .647 slugging percentage, a .452 on-base percentage and a .886 fielding percentage. He led the team in batting, runs scored and slugging percentage, while tying for the team-high in home runs.

Sophomore second/third baseman Jeff Costa (Pawtucket, RI) played in 32 games, starting 28 of them. He batted .196 with 20 runs scored, 20 hits, two doubles, one home run, 10 RBI and a team-high eight stolen bases. He owned a .245 slugging percentage a .299 on-base percentage and a .938 fielding percentage.

Sophomore center fielder B.J. Doyon (Douglas, MA) played in 33 games, starting all of them. He batted .308 with 27 runs scored, 40 hits, a team-high 13 doubles, two home runs, 21 RBI and five stolen bases. He owned a .454 slugging percentage, a .379 on-base percentage and a .975 fielding percentage.

Sophomore third baseman Bobby Fournier (Dartmouth, MA) played in 15 games, starting 10 of them. He batted .250 with four runs scored, eight hits, one double and two RBI. He owned a .281 slugging percentage, a .294 on-base percentage and a .593 fielding percentage.

Sophomore second baseman Garrett Grenier (North Smithfield, RI) played in 15 games, starting eight of them. He batted .154 with three runs scored, four hits and two RBI. He owned a .154 slugging percentage, a .241 on-base percentage and a .932 fielding percentage.

Sophomore left fielder Chris O’Connors (North Kingstown, RI) was named Second Team All-Little East Conference. He played in 34 games, starting all of them. He batted .371 with 34 runs scored, 46 hits, nine doubles, one triple, two home runs, 31 RBI and four stolen bases. He owned a .508 slugging percentage, a .456 on-base percentage and a .878 fielding percentage.

Freshman pitcher Mike Boucher (Woonsocket, RI) appeared in four games. He was 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA, seven strikeouts in 8.0 innings.

Freshman pitcher Bobby Germane (Barrington, RI) appeared in 11 games, starting nine of them. He was 5-3 with a 4.30 ERA and a team-high 52 strikeouts in 58.2 innings. German logged one complete game on the season.

Freshman second basemen Brendan McDevitt (North Kingstown, RI) played 10 games, starting two of them. He batted .200 with three runs scored and two hits. He owned a .200 slugging percentage, a .333 on-base percentage and a 1.000 fielding percentage.

Freshman outfielder/designated hitter Jared Rossi (Johnston, RI) played in 16 games, starting 14 of them. He batted .276 with 12 runs scored, 16 hits, two doubles, one triple, three home runs, 12 RBI and one stolen base. He owned a .500 slugging percentage, a .364 on-base percentage and a 1.000 fielding percentage.

Freshman outfielder Mike St. Germain (Seekonk, MA) played in nine games, starting one of them. He batted .455 with four runs scored, five hits, four RBI and three stolen bases. He owned a .455 slugging percentage and a .571 on-base percentage.

Freshman second baseman/catcher Andrew Sceeles (Seekonk, MA) played in seven games, starting one of them. He batted .333 with three runs scored, three hits and two doubles. He owned a .556 slugging percentage and a .333 on-base percentage.

Freshman first baseman Tim Schabowski (Pascoag, RI) played in 19 games, starting nine of them. He batted .212 with nine runs scored, seven hits, two doubles and seven RBI. He owned a .273 slugging percentage a .458 on-base percentage and a .977 fielding percentage.

Freshman pitcher Brian Sullivan (Newport, RI) was a reserve on the team.

Freshman pitcher Paul Vatter (Warwick, RI) appeared in a team-high 16 games, starting two of them. He was 3-4 with a 4.38 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 39 innings.
