Anchorwomen Edged In Overtime, 59-50

KEENE, N.H.—The Rhode Island College women’s basketball team put a scare into Little East Conference rival Keene State College this afternoon at Spaulding Gymnasium, falling in overtime to the hosts, 59-50. The Anchorwomen limited the Owls to just 16 points in the second half to forge a 50-50 tie at the end of regulation

Keene State (11-5, 5-2 LEC) freshman Kristin Degou (Newburyport, Mass.) broke the tie 35 seconds into the extra frame, converting on a layup. Rhode Island College (10-7, 2-5) would not get any closer as the Owls’ recorded all nine points in the overtime session to seal their second straight victory over the Anchorwomen this season.

Senior forward Kari Geisler (Deerfield, N.H.) paced Rhode Island College with a season-high 22 points, while also hauling in eight rebounds. Geisler led the comeback charge with 18 points, on 7-for-14 from the floor, and collected six caroms in the second stanza. Junior forward Josalee Danieli (New Gloucester, Maine) turned in a balanced attack, scoring eight points and pulling in eight rebounds

The Anchorwomen used a stifling defensive attack in the second half to climb back into the contest, holding Keene State to just 7-for-29 from the field. The defensive pressure allowed the visitors to outscore the hosts, 30-16, in the final 20 minutes of regulation, whittling away a 16-point deficit. Geisler extended the game with a layup with just 16 seconds remaining on the clock.

Senior forward Sarah Begnoche (Millville, Mass.) posted a double-double, registering 22 points and a game-high 13 rebounds to lead the Owls. Classmate guard Bri Barnes (Merrimack, N.H.) also reached double figures in scoring, logging 12 points, while Degou nearly collected a double-double of her own, netting nine points and hauling in nine rebounds.

Rhode Island College returns to the hardwood on Jan. 23, when the Anchorwomen travel to UMass Dartmouth for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
