Second Half Surge Spoils Anchormen, 4-2
Salem State Scores 4 Second Half Goals

Salem, Mass.- Rhode Island College suffered a 4-2 setback at Salem State College this evening in non-conference men’s soccer action on Alumni Field. The hosts Vikings scored four second half goals to erase a one-goal half time advantage for the Anchormen.

Rhode Island College (5-6-2) cracked the scoring column in 23rd minute, when sophomore midfielder Matt Turbitt (Providence, R.I.) cashed in on a senior midfielder Derek Rocha (Fall River, Mass.) feed. Turbitt was credited with his second marker of the campaign, while Rocha added his second helper. Sophomore goalkeeper Dereck Loisel (Warwick, R.I.) stopped all five shots he faced in the frame to send the Anchormen into the intermission leading 1-0. His counterpart Pawel Brzyck (Krakow, Poland) was chased after just one save in 45 minutes.

Salem State College (9-3-1) was finally able to solve Loisel in the second stanza, exploding for four unanswered goals. The Vikings scored a pair of markers in the span of 33 seconds to take a lead they would not relinquish. The hosts netted two more tallies in the 60th and 85th minute, respectively—the latter coming on a penalty kick.

Rhode Island College junior midfielder Brandon Migliore (Coventry, R.I.) halved the Vikings advantage in the 90th minute to round out the evening’s scoring. It was Migliore’s first marker of the season.

Freshman goalkeeper Gabriel Gonzalez (Bayamon, PR) earned the victory for the Vikings, registering three saves, while Loisel made seven saves for the third consecutive match.

Rhode Island College returns to action at 4 p.m. on Oct. 13, when the Anchormen travel to Plymouth State University (4-5-1) for a crucial Little East Conference tilt. The Panthers boast six points in the conference circuit, while the Anchormen have penned four in their ledger.
