Rhode Island College Wrestling Takes
Top Spot at Roger Williams Invitational

Bonora, Davis & Sutherland Take Titles as Eight Anchormen Place


Bristol, RI—The Rhode Island College wrestling team opened the 2007-08 season with an impressive first place finish at the Roger Williams Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 10. The Anchormen won three of the ten weight classes, while five additional grapplers placed in the top six.


RIC totaled 139 points, which was equaled by Bridgewater State, to lead the 11-team field. The Anchormen are currently ranked No. 2 in New England.




Senior Mike Bonora (Nutley, NJ), an All-American and New England Champion last winter, went 4-0 to capture the 141 lbs. crown. He defeated Wesleyan’s Kyle Baicker-McKee with a decisive, 17-2, title-match victory.




Senior Kevin Davis (Amston, CT) went 4-0 to win the 197 lbs. weight class. Davis defeated Roger Williams’ Nick Cambi, 6-3, in the title match.




Freshman Kevin Sutherland (Dauphin, PA) went 5-0 to capture first place at 149 lbs. He defeated Johnson & Wales’ Robert Doherty, 9-2, in the title match.




In addition, freshman Travis Drappi (West Orange, NJ) went 4-1 and earned a second place finish at 133 lbs. Sophomore Mike Martini (Cranston, RI) went 5-2 and finished fourth at 157 lbs. Senior Brendan Casey (Lowell, MA) also placed fourth, going 4-2, at 174 lbs.


Junior Nick Logan (Lowell, MA) and sophomore Ray Moore (Wrentham, MA) each went 4-2 and earned a fifth-place finish at 184 and 197 lbs., respectively.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will see its first Pilgrim Wrestling League action of the season when the Anchormen travel to M.I.T. on Wednesday, Nov. 14.
