Danbury, CT—The Western Connecticut State University women’s soccer team got back to their winning ways on Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Rhode Island College at the Westside Athletic Complex.




Sophomore forward Lauren Matthews (Monroe, CT) netted a pair of goals, her fifth and sixth markers of the season to lead WestConn over the Anchorwomen. Her first goal game in the third minute of play after Domonique Pascascio (Hamden, CT) delivered a sharp pass through the RIC defense on the right side of the box.



WestConn took a 2-0 lead at the 19:04 mark when 2007 NSCAA All-American Catherine Nathans (New Fairfield, CT) deposited her fourth goal of the season. A direct pass from Angela Wozniak (Ludlow, MA) set her up for the score.


The Colonials, now 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the Little East Conference, added an insurance goal in the closing minutes when Matthews received a long pass from Tina Dias (Shelton, CT) with 13:07 left in the game. Shannon Cawley (Willimantic, CT) earned the shutout, her third of the season and did not have to make a save for the Colonials.


WestConn finished the game with a 33-3 advantage in shots. RIC falls to 1-10 overall and 0-2-1 in the Little East.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Wesleyan on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m.
