Providence, RI—Rhode Island College senior defender Josh Silva (Dartmouth, MA) and freshman goalkeeper Justin O’Connor (North Kingstown, RI) were honored by the Little East Conference for their performance in men’s soccer last week.


Silva was named the Little East Conference Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. He backstopped a Rhode Island College defensive third that posted a 0.50 goals against average and recorded its eighth shutout of the season this past week. Silva and his defensive mates limited Plymouth State to just five shots, including two on net, in a 0-0 double overtime draw on Oct. 18. Rhode Island College has yet to surrender a marker in Little East action, a streak spanning 470 minutes. Earlier in the week, the Anchormen held regionally-ranked Salem State to nearly 1.5 goals below their season average in a 4-1 non-conference victory on Oct. 15. Silva has played in 14 games, starting all of them. He has one assist for one point.

O’Connor was named the Little East Conference Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week for the second time this season. He made two saves against Plymouth State to extend his conference scoreless streak to 470 minutes and collect his fifth conference shutout in a 0-0 double overtime draw on Oct. 18. Earlier in the week, the rookie netminder stopped five of the six shots he faced against regionally-ranked Salem State College to backstop Rhode Island College to a 4-1 victory on Oct. 15. For the season, he has played in 12 games, starting nine of them. He is 7-2-3 with seven shutouts, a 0.59 goals against average, a .865 save percentage and 45 saves in 1,06:47 of action. O’Connor has also been named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week on one occasion this fall.

Head Coach John Mello’s team is 8-4-3 overall and 4-0-1 (first place) in the Little East Conference. In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Westfield State on Wednesday, Oct. 22.
