Providence, RIó The Rhode Island College wrestling team is ranked No. 29 in D3Wrestle.comís preseason poll. RIC returns one New England Champion, junior Mike Martini (Cranston, RI) at 157 lbs., as well as All-New England grapplers in sophomores Travis Drappi (West Orange, NJ) at 133 lbs. and Kevin Sutherland (Dauphin, PA) at 149 lbs. and senior Nick Logan (Lowell, MA) at 184 lbs.

Head Coach Jay Jonesí Anchormen finished the 2007-08 season with a 16-4 overall record, an 11-3 record against New England Wrestling Association opponents and a 4-2 (third place) mark in the Pilgrim Wrestling League. The Anchormen finished the season ranked No. 14 in the nation, with one individual National Champion.


Rhode Island College captured its sixth New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) title, and the programís first since winning five straight (1988-92), with a first place finish at the annual NEWA Championships, hosted by Southern Maine on Feb. 23-24. The Anchormen had two individual New England Champions, having individual wrestlers attain All-N.E. status in eight of the 10 weight classes. RIC finished the two-day tourney with 121.0 points, outdistancing Pilgrim League rivals Johnson & Wales by five. Williams (105.5), Springfield (89.0) and Bridgewater State (80.0) rounded out the top five institutions.


Over the course of the season, Rhode Island College earned first place finishes at the Roger Williams Invitational, the Doug Parker Invitational and at the R.I.T. Invitational.


The Anchormen will open the 2008-09 season at the Roger Williams Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 15.
