Providence, RI—Wheaton scored 10 runs over the final two innings to lead the Lyons past Rhode Island College, 14-6, in collegiate baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Anchorman Field. Wheaton raises its record to 10-1, while RIC falls to 8-3 on the season.




The Lyons took an early, 1-0, lead in the top of the first as sophomore designated hitter Sean Munley (Trenton, NJ) plated one with a sacrifice fly. The Anchormen came back with two runs in the second as sophomore designated hitter Mike Giustino (Wappingers Falls, NY) and freshman center fielder Jeff Salcedo (Providence, RI) registered RBI-singles




The visitors tied the game in the third on Munley’s RBI double, but the hosts came back with two more in the home half of the frame on a senior shortstop Josh Cardoso (Dartmouth, MA) RBI single and a sacrifice fly from classmate right fielder B.J. Doyon (Douglas, MA).

Wheaton tied the game up with runs in both the fourth and fifth. The Anchormen once again jumped on top, taking a 6-4 lead, with a solo homer (1) and then an RBI single from senior catcher Jordan Amorin (Swansea, MA) in the fifth and seventh innings, respectively.




The Lyons exploded four five runs in the top of the eighth, paced by a two-run double from junior catcher Jeff Lieneck (Foxboro, MA) and RBI singles by freshman third baseman Dan Haugh (Andover, MA), junior first baseman Jason Clucas (Peabody, MA) and freshman right fielder Hal Landers (Salem, NH).




The visitors sealed the win with five more runs in the ninth as senior shortstop Nick Pecora (Highland Park, NJ) smacked a two-run homer (3) in the frame.




Wheaton sophomore Chad Kasik (Dudley, MA) picked up his first win (1-0) in relief. RIC junior Bobby Venditto (Cranston, RI) took the loss (1-2).




Lieneck went 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored, while Pecora went 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored.




Amorin and Salcedo each went 2-for-4 for the Anchormen.




In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon with Newbury beginning at noon.
