Three Anchormen Homer in, 11-2, Victory


New London, CTóSophomore first baseman Gary Levesque (East Providence, RI) went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, three RBI, a double and home run (2) as Rhode Island College clobbered Coast Guard, 11-2, on Tuesday afternoon in collegiate baseball action.

Senior shortstop Josh Cardoso (Dartmouth, MA) and junior right fielder Jared Rossi (Johnston, RI) also belted homers in the win. Junior starting pitcher Paul Vatter (Warwick, RI) picked up his second win (2-0), allowing two runs on seven hits, while striking out six, in seven innings of work. Sophomore Eric Gelsomino (Johnston, RI) and junior Bobby Venditto (Cranston, RI) hurled scoreless eighth and ninth innings, respectively.

Rossi led off the game with a solo shot to stake the Anchormen to a 1-0 lead. Senior designated hitter Bryan Colombero (Skillman, NJ) led off the second with a double and later scored on an error.




Cardoso notched an RBI single in the third and homered in the fifth to give the visitors a 4-0 lead. Senior second baseman Garrett Grenier (North Smithfield, RI) smacked an RBI double in the fifth as well, making the score, 5-0.




Levesque and senior right fielder B.J. Doyon (Douglas, MA) contributed RBI singles and freshman center fielder Jeff Salcedo (Providence, RI) doubled in two more to help seal the game with a four-run sixth.




The Bears got on the board in the seventh as junior second baseman John Jaffares (St. Petersburg, FL) plated two with a single. Levesque belted a two-run bomb in the top of the ninth to cap the win.




Coast Guard sophomore pitcher Mike Ahlin (Longview, WA) took the loss (1-3, allowing nine runs on eight hits in five innings of work.




The Anchormen improve their record to 11-3 overall, while Coast Guard see its mark fall to 4-10. In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Framingham State tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
